⁴ The fourth was Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith.
The fifth was Shephatiah, whose mother was Abital.

“My child,^[b] don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline,
    and don’t give up when he corrects you.
⁶ For the Lord disciplines those he loves,
    and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”^[c]

¹⁵ To discipline a child produces wisdom,
    but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child.

¹³ Don’t fail to discipline your children.
    The rod of punishment won’t kill them.
¹⁴ Physical discipline
    may well save them from death.^[a]

¹⁵ A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness,
    but physical discipline will drive it far away.
