⁵² Solomon replied, “If he shows himself to be worthy, not a hair^(A) of his head will fall to the ground; but if evil is found in him, he will die.”

⁴⁵ But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair^(A) of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued^(B) Jonathan, and he was not put to death.

¹¹ She said, “Then let the king invoke the Lord his God to prevent the avenger^(A) of blood from adding to the destruction, so that my son will not be destroyed.”

“As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “not one hair^(B) of your son’s head will fall to the ground.^(C)”

²¹ So she said, “Let Abishag^(A) the Shunammite be given in marriage to your brother Adonijah.”

²² King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request Abishag^(B) the Shunammite for Adonijah? You might as well request the kingdom for him—after all, he is my older brother^(C)—yes, for him and for Abiathar^(D) the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah!”

²³ Then King Solomon swore by the Lord: “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,^(E) if Adonijah does not pay with his life for this request! ²⁴ And now, as surely as the Lord lives—he who has established me securely on the throne of my father David and has founded a dynasty for me as he promised^(F)—Adonijah shall be put to death today!” ²⁵ So King Solomon gave orders to Benaiah^(G) son of Jehoiada, and he struck down Adonijah and he died.^(H)

³⁴ Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head.”^(A)

¹⁸ But not a hair of your head will perish.^(A)
