Confianza victoriosa

5 Si creemos que Jesús es el Mesías, en verdad seremos hijos de Dios. Y recordemos que, si amamos al Padre, también debemos amar a los hijos de ese mismo Padre. 2 Y sabemos que amamos a Dios y obedecemos sus mandamientos, cuando también amamos a los hijos de Dios. 3 Nosotros demostramos que amamos a Dios cuando obedecemos sus mandamientos; y obedecerlos no es difícil. 4 En realidad, todo el que es hijo de Dios vence lo malo de este mundo, y todo el que confía en Jesucristo obtiene la victoria. 5 El que cree que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, vence al mundo y a su maldad.

Quién es Jesucristo

6 Cuando Jesucristo vino a este mundo, fue bautizado en agua, y al morir derramó su sangre. El Espíritu de Dios es testigo de esto, y todo lo que el Espíritu dice es verdad. 7 Son tres los que nos enseñan que esto es verdad: 8 el Espíritu de Dios, el agua del bautismo, y la sangre que Jesús derramó al morir en la cruz. Y los tres dicen lo mismo.

9 Nosotros valoramos lo que dice la gente, pero valoramos más lo que Dios dice, porque nos habla acerca de su Hijo. 10 Confiar en el Hijo de Dios es creer en lo que Dios ha dicho. Pero el que no cree en Dios lo hace pasar por mentiroso, porque no ha creído lo que Dios mismo ha dicho acerca de su Hijo Jesucristo. 11 Y lo que Dios ha dicho es que él nos ha dado vida eterna, y que tendremos esa vida si creemos en su Hijo. 12 Si vivimos unidos al Hijo de Dios, tenemos vida eterna. Si no vivimos unidos al Hijo de Dios, no tenemos vida eterna.

Conclusión

13 Les escribo esto a ustedes, que confían en el Hijo de Dios, para que sepan que tienen vida eterna. 14 Confiamos en Dios, pues sabemos que él nos oye, si le pedimos algo que a él le agrada. 15 Y así como sabemos que él oye nuestras oraciones, también sabemos que ya nos ha dado lo que le hemos pedido.

16 Si alguno ve que un hermano de la iglesia comete un pecado que no lleva a la muerte, debe orar por ese hermano, para que Dios le dé vida. Pero debe tratarse de un pecado que no lleve a la muerte. Porque hay pecados que llevan a la muerte, y quiero decirles que no se debe orar por quienes los cometen. 17 Todo tipo de maldad es pecado, pero no todo pecado lleva a la muerte.

18 Sabemos que los hijos de Dios no pecan porque Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, los cuida, y el diablo no puede hacerles daño. 19 Sabemos que somos de Dios, y que el resto de la gente en el mundo está dominada por el diablo. 20 Y también sabemos que el Hijo de Dios ha venido, y que nos ha dado la capacidad de conocer al Dios verdadero. Nosotros vivimos unidos a su Hijo Jesucristo; él es el Dios verdadero, que da la vida eterna.

21 Cuidado, hijos míos, no obedezcan a los dioses falsos.

Disciples’ Literal New Testament

Everyone Born of God Believes Jesus Is His Son, Loves His People, Keeps His Commands

5 Everyone believing that Jesus is the Christ has been born[a] from God. And everyone loving the One[b] having fathered is loving also the one having been born[c] from Him. 2 By this we know that we are loving[d] the children of God: when we are loving God and doing His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God: that we be keeping His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

Because The One Born of God Is Victorious Over The World By Faith In Jesus

4 Because everything having been born from God is being-victorious-over the world. And this is the victory having been-victorious-over the world: our faith!

Who Indeed Is Victorious If Not The One Believing Jesus Is The Son of God!

5 And who is the one being-victorious-over the world if not the one believing[e] that Jesus is the Son of God!

Because Jesus Christ Has The Three-Fold Witness of God

6 This One is the One having come by water and blood[f]: Jesus Christ (not in[g] the water only, but[h] in the water and in the blood). And the Spirit is the One testifying, because[i] the Spirit is the truth. 7 Because[j] the ones testifying are three[k]: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood. And the three are for the[l] one thing. 9 If we receive the testimony of humans, the testimony of God is greater!

Because God Himself Has Testified That He Has Given Us Eternal Life In His Son

Because[m] this is the testimony of God: that[n] He has testified about His Son! 10 The one believing in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. The one not believing God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony which God has testified about His Son. 11 And this is the testimony[o]: that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 The one having the Son has the life. The one not having the Son of God does not have the life.

I Wrote These Things That You May Know You Have Eternal Life

13 I wrote these[p] things to you, the ones believing in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.

And This We Know With Confidence:

14 And this is the confidence which we have before Him:

That God Hears Our Prayers

... that if we request anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us— whatever we request— we know that we have the requests which we have requested from Him.

But I Am Not Implying You Should Pray About a Sin Leading To Death

16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he shall request, and He will give him life— for the ones sinning a sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death[q]. I am not saying that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.

That God’s Children Are Not Sinning, And Are Protected From Satan

18 We know that everyone having been born[r] from God is not sinning[s]. But the One[t] having been fathered from God is keeping[u] him. And the evil one is not touching[v] him.

That We Are Born From God

19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in[w] the evil one.

That We Know The True God And Have Eternal Life In Him

20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding in order that we might know the true[x] One. And we are in[y] the true One, in His Son Jesus Christ. This One[z] is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little-children, guard yourselves from idols!

  4. 1 John 5:2 That is, with love flowing from an abiding relationship with God. In this section, John inseparably binds together love for God, love for His children, believing in His Son, and obeying His commandments. We cannot claim to have one apart from any of the others.

  8. 1 John 5:6 John denies some false teaching of his day, the details of which are not certain. We know some denied that God died. They taught that the Spirit of God came on the human Jesus at His baptism and left in Gethsemane. Jesus was not God come in the flesh (4:2), and His death had no significance. Perhaps John is refuting some such teaching here.
  9. 1 John 5:6 The Spirit is presently adding His testimony to the two historical witnesses because it is His nature to testify to the truth.
  10. 1 John 5:7 The one believing Jesus is the Son of God is victorious (v 5) because Jesus has the threefold divine testimony to His identity, sufficient proof even in a human court.
  11. 1 John 5:7 three: the Spirit. Some manuscripts say ‘three in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. And these three are one. And the ones giving testimony on earth are three: the Spirit’.
  12. 1 John 5:8 That is, they are in agreement.
  13. 1 John 5:9 The one believing is victorious because he is believing God’s own testimony.
  14. 1 John 5:9 God’s testimony is that He has testified.
  15. 1 John 5:11 The content of God’s testimony regarding His Son is now given.
  16. 1 John 5:13 That is, 4:7-5:12; or, 5:1-12; or, 5:5-12; or, the whole book.
  17. 1 John 5:16 If John means physical death, any sin leading to this level of discipline from God could be in view, as in Act 5:5; 1 Cor 11:30. If John means spiritual, eternal death, some think he means the knowing and deliberate rejection of Christ, as in 2:19, 22, and Heb 6:4-6; 10:26-29.

Some think it would redundant to say the true One... is the true God, and so John says here what he says in Jn 1:1: Jesus is God. Others think John repeats himself for emphasis as he prepares for the command regarding idols.

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God

5 Everyone who believes(A) that Jesus is the Christ(B) is born of God,(C) and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.(D) 2 This is how we know(E) that we love the children of God:(F) by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands.(G) And his commands are not burdensome,(H) 4 for everyone born of God(I) overcomes(J) the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.(K)

6 This is the one who came by water and blood(L)—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.(M) 7 For there are three(N) that testify: 8 the[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony,(O) but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God,(P) which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony.(Q) Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar,(R) because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,(S) and this life is in his Son.(T) 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.(U)

Concluding Affirmations

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God(V) so that you may know that you have eternal life.(W) 14 This is the confidence(X) we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.(Y) 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know(Z) that we have what we asked of him.(AA)

16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.(AB) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.(AC) I am not saying that you should pray about that.(AD) 17 All wrongdoing is sin,(AE) and there is sin that does not lead to death.(AF)

18 We know that anyone born of God(AG) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one(AH) cannot harm them.(AI) 19 We know that we are children of God,(AJ) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.(AK) 20 We know also that the Son of God has come(AL) and has given us understanding,(AM) so that we may know him who is true.(AN) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.(AO)

21 Dear children,(AP) keep yourselves from idols.(AQ)
