Asunto y propósito de la carta

1 Lo que existía desde el principio(A), lo que hemos oído(B), lo que hemos visto(C) con nuestros propios ojos, lo que hemos contemplado(D) y lo que han tocado nuestras manos(E), esto escribimos acerca del Verbo de vida(F). 2 Y la vida se manifestó(G). Nosotros la hemos visto(H), y damos testimonio(I) y les anunciamos a ustedes la vida eterna(J) que estaba con el Padre(K) y se manifestó a nosotros(L). 3 Lo que hemos visto(M) y oído(N) les proclamamos también a ustedes, para que también ustedes tengan comunión con nosotros. En verdad nuestra comunión es con el Padre y con Su Hijo Jesucristo(O). 4 Les escribimos estas cosas(P) para que nuestro gozo sea completo(Q).

Dios es Luz

5 Y este es el mensaje que hemos oído de Él(R) y que les anunciamos: Dios es Luz(S), y en Él no hay ninguna tiniebla. 6 Si decimos que tenemos comunión con Él(T), pero[a] andamos en tinieblas, mentimos(U) y no practicamos la verdad(V). 7 Pero si andamos en la Luz(W), como Él está en la Luz(X), tenemos comunión los unos con los otros, y la sangre de Jesús Su Hijo nos limpia de todo pecado(Y).

8 Si decimos que no tenemos pecado(Z), nos engañamos a nosotros mismos y la verdad no está en nosotros(AA). 9 Si confesamos nuestros pecados(AB), Él es fiel y justo para perdonarnos los pecados y para limpiarnos de toda maldad[b](AC). 10 Si decimos que no hemos pecado(AD), lo hacemos a Él mentiroso(AE) y Su palabra no está en nosotros(AF).

Il Verbo incarnato e la comunione con il Padre e il Figlio

1 Ciò che era fin da principio, ciò che noi abbiamo udito, ciò che noi abbiamo veduto con i nostri occhi, ciò che noi abbiamo contemplato e ciò che le nostre mani hanno toccato, ossia il Verbo della vita 2 (poiché la vita si è fatta visibile, noi l'abbiamo veduta e di ciò rendiamo testimonianza e vi annunziamo la vita eterna, che era presso il Padre e si è resa visibile a noi), 3 quello che abbiamo veduto e udito, noi lo annunziamo anche a voi, perché anche voi siate in comunione con noi. La nostra comunione è col Padre e col Figlio suo Gesù Cristo. 4 Queste cose vi scriviamo, perché la nostra gioia sia perfetta.

I. CAMMINARE NELLA LUCE

5 Questo è il messaggio che abbiamo udito da lui e che ora vi annunziamo: Dio è luce e in lui non ci sono tenebre. 6 Se diciamo che siamo in comunione con lui e camminiamo nelle tenebre, mentiamo e non mettiamo in pratica la verità. 7 Ma se camminiamo nella luce, come egli è nella luce, siamo in comunione gli uni con gli altri, e il sangue di Gesù, suo Figlio, ci purifica da ogni peccato.

Prima condizione: rompere con il peccato

8 Se diciamo che siamo senza peccato, inganniamo noi stessi e la verità non è in noi. 9 Se riconosciamo i nostri peccati, egli che è fedele e giusto ci perdonerà i peccati e ci purificherà da ogni colpa. 10 Se diciamo che non abbiamo peccato, facciamo di lui un bugiardo e la sua parola non è in noi.

The Incarnation of the Word of Life

1 That which was from the beginning,(A) which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,(B) which we have looked at and our hands have touched(C)—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared;(D) we have seen it and testify to it,(E) and we proclaim to you the eternal life,(F) which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard,(G) so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.(H) 4 We write this(I) to make our[a] joy complete.(J)

Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness

5 This is the message we have heard(K) from him and declare to you: God is light;(L) in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness,(M) we lie and do not live out the truth.(N) 7 But if we walk in the light,(O) as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[b] sin.(P)

8 If we claim to be without sin,(Q) we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.(R) 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins(S) and purify us from all unrighteousness.(T) 10 If we claim we have not sinned,(U) we make him out to be a liar(V) and his word is not in us.(W)

The Voice

1 We want to tell you about the One who was from the beginning. We have seen Him with our own eyes, heard Him with our own ears, and touched Him with our own hands. This One is the manifestation of the life-giving Voice, 2 and He showed us real life, eternal life. We have seen it all, and we can’t keep what we witnessed quiet—we have to share it with you. We are inviting you to experience eternal life through the One who was with the Father and came down to us. 3 What we saw and heard we pass on to you so that you, too, will be connected with us intimately and become family. Our family is united by our connection with the Father and His Son Jesus, the Anointed One; 4 and we write all this because retelling this story fulfills our[a] joy.

5 What we are telling you now is the very message we heard from Him: God is pure light, undimmed by darkness of any kind. 6 If we say we have an intimate connection with the Father but we continue stumbling around in darkness, then we are lying because we do not live according to truth. 7 If we walk step by step in the light, where the Father is, then we are ultimately connected to each other through the sacrifice of Jesus His Son. His blood purifies us from all our sins. 8 If we go around bragging, “We have no sin,” then we are fooling ourselves and are strangers to the truth. 9 But if we own up to our sins, God shows that He is faithful and just by forgiving us of our sins and purifying us from the pollution of all the bad things we have done. 10 If we say, “We have not sinned,” then we depict God as a liar and show that we have not let His word find its way into our hearts.
