Knowing the True—Rejecting the False

18 We know that (A)whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God (B)keeps[a] [b]himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

19 We know that we are of God, and (C)the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

20 And we know that the (D)Son of God has come and (E)has given us an understanding, (F)that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. (G)This is the true God (H)and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Greeting the Elect Lady

The Elder,

To the [c]elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all those who have known (I)the truth, because of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever:

(J)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with [d]you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

Walk in Christ’s Commandments

I (K)rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: (L)that we love one another. (M)This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that (N)as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.
