Knowing the True—Rejecting the False

¹⁸We know that ^(A)whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God ^(B)keeps^[a] ^[b]himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

¹⁹We know that we are of God, and ^(C)the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

²⁰And we know that the ^(D)Son of God has come and ^(E)has given us an understanding, ^(F)that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. ^(G)This is the true God ^(H)and eternal life.

²¹Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Greeting the Elect Lady

¹The Elder,

To the ^[c]elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all those who have known ^(I)the truth, ²because of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever:

³^(J)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with ^[d]you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

Walk in Christ’s Commandments

⁴I ^(K)rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. ⁵And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: ^(L)that we love one another. ⁶^(M)This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that ^(N)as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.
