¹⁴ This is the confidence^(A) we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.^{(B) 15} And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know^(C) that we have what we asked of him.^(D)

¹⁶ If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.^(E) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.^(F) I am not saying that you should pray about that.^{(G) 17} All wrongdoing is sin,^(H) and there is sin that does not lead to death.^(I)

¹⁸ We know that anyone born of God^(J) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one^(K) cannot harm them.^{(L) 19} We know that we are children of God,^(M) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.^{(N) 20} We know also that the Son of God has come^(O) and has given us understanding,^(P) so that we may know him who is true.^(Q) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.^(R)

²¹ Dear children,^(S) keep yourselves from idols.^(T)

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.^(A) Jesus’ mother^(B) was there, ² and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. ³ When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

⁴ “Woman,^[a](C) why do you involve me?”^(D) Jesus replied. “My hour^(E) has not yet come.”

⁵ His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”^(F)

⁶ Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,^(G) each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.^[b]

⁷ Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

⁸ Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, ⁹ and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.^(H) He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside ¹⁰ and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

¹¹ What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs^(I) through which he revealed his glory;^(J) and his disciples believed in him.^(K)
