3 See (A)what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called (B)children of God; and so we are. The reason why (C)the world does not know us is that (D)it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are (E)God's children (F)now, and what we will be (G)has not yet appeared; but we know that (H)when he appears[a] (I)we shall be like him, because (J)we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who (K)thus hopes in him (L)purifies himself as he is pure.
4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; (M)sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that (N)he appeared in order to (O)take away sins, and (P)in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; (Q)no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, (R)let no one deceive you. (S)Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 (T)Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was (U)to destroy the works of the devil. 9 (V)No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's[b] seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, (W)nor is the one who (X)does not love his brother.
Love One Another
11 For (Y)this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, (Z)that we should love one another. 12 We should not be like (AA)Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? (AB)Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, brothers,[c] (AC)that the world hates you. 14 We know that (AD)we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 (AE)Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that (AF)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
16 By this we know love, that (AG)he laid down his life for us, and (AH)we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But (AI)if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet (AJ)closes his heart against him, (AK)how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not (AL)love in word or talk but in deed and (AM)in truth.
19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, (AN)if our heart does not condemn us, (AO)we have confidence before God; 22 and (AP)whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and (AQ)do what pleases him. 23 And this is his commandment, (AR)that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and (AS)love one another, (AT)just as he has commanded us. 24 (AU)Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God,[d] and God[e] in him. And (AV)by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

3 Se vilken kärlek Fadern har bevisat oss därmed att vi få kallas Guds barn, vilket vi ock äro. Därför känner världen oss icke, eftersom den icke har lärt känna honom.
2 Mina älskade, vi äro nu Guds barn, och vad vi skola bliva, det är ännu icke uppenbart. Men det veta vi, att när han en gång uppenbaras, skola vi bliva honom lika; ty då skola vi få se honom sådan han är.
3 Och var och en som har detta hopp till honom, han renar sig, likasom Han är ren.
4 Var och en som gör synd, han överträder ock lagen, ty synd är överträdelse av lagen.
5 Och i veten att Han uppenbarades, för att han skulle borttaga synderna; och synd finnes icke i honom.
6 Var och en som förbliver i honom, han syndar icke; var och en som syndar, han har icke sett honom och icke lärt känna honom.
7 Kära barn, låten ingen förvilla eder. Den som gör vad rättfärdigt är, han är rättfärdig, likasom Han är rättfärdig.
8 Den som gör synd, han är av djävulen, ty djävulen har syndat från begynnelsen. Och just därför uppenbarades Guds Son, att han skulle göra om intet djävulens gärningar.
9 Var och en som är född av Gud, han gör icke synd, ty Guds säd förbliver i honom; han kan icke synda, eftersom han är född av Gud.
10 Därav är uppenbart vilka som äro Guds barn, och vilka som äro djävulens barn, därav att var och en som icke gör vad rättfärdigt är, han är icke av Gud, ej heller den som icke älskar sin broder.
11 Ty detta är det budskap som I haven hört från begynnelsen, att vi skola älska varandra
12 och icke likna Kain, som var av den onde och slog ihjäl sin broder. Och varför slog han ihjäl honom? Därför att hans egna gärningar voro onda och hans broders gärningar rättfärdiga.
13 Förundren eder icke, mina bröder, om världen hatar eder.
14 Vi veta att vi hava övergått från döden till livet, ty vi älska bröderna. Den som icke älskar, han förbliver i döden.
15 Var och en som hatar sin broder, han är en mandråpare; och I veten att ingen mandråpare har evigt liv förblivande i sig.
16 Därav att Han gav sitt liv för oss hava vi lärt känna kärleken; så äro ock vi pliktiga att giva våra liv för bröderna.
17 Men om någon har denna världens goda och tillsluter sitt hjärta för sin broder, när han ser honom lida nöd, huru kan då Guds kärlek förbliva i honom?
18 Kära barn, låtom oss älska icke med ord eller med tungan, utan i gärning och i sanning.
19 Därav skola vi veta att vi äro av sanningen; och så kunna vi inför honom övertyga vårt hjärta därom,
20 att om vårt hjärta fördömer oss, så är Gud större än vårt hjärta och vet allt.
21 Mina älskade, om vårt hjärta icke fördömer oss, så hava vi frimodighet inför Gud,
22 och vadhelst vi bedja om, det få vi av honom, eftersom vi hålla hans bud och göra vad som är välbehagligt för honom.
23 Och detta är hans bud, att vi skola tro på hans Sons, Jesu Kristi, namn och älska varandra, enligt det bud han har givit oss.
24 Och den som håller hans bud, han förbliver i Gud, och Gud förbliver i honom. Och att han förbliver i oss, det veta vi av Anden, som han har givit oss.

3 ¡Fíjense qué gran amor nos ha dado el Padre, que se nos llame hijos de Dios! ¡Y lo somos! El mundo no nos conoce, precisamente, porque no lo conoció a él. 2 Queridos hermanos, ahora somos hijos de Dios, pero todavía no se ha manifestado lo que habremos de ser. Sabemos, sin embargo, que cuando Cristo venga seremos semejantes a él, porque lo veremos tal como él es. 3 Todo el que tiene esta esperanza en Cristo se purifica a sí mismo, así como él es puro.
4 Todo el que comete pecado quebranta la ley; de hecho, el pecado es transgresión de la ley. 5 Pero ustedes saben que Jesucristo se manifestó para quitar nuestros pecados. Y él no tiene pecado. 6 Todo el que permanece en él no practica el pecado. Todo el que practica el pecado no lo ha visto ni lo ha conocido.
7 Queridos hijos, que nadie los engañe. El que practica la justicia es justo, así como él es justo. 8 El que practica el pecado es del diablo, porque el diablo ha estado pecando desde el principio. El Hijo de Dios fue enviado precisamente para destruir las obras del diablo. 9 Ninguno que haya nacido de Dios practica el pecado, porque la semilla de Dios permanece en él; no puede seguir pecando, porque ha nacido de Dios. 10 Así distinguimos entre los hijos de Dios y los hijos del diablo: el que no practica la justicia no es hijo de Dios, como tampoco lo es el que no ama a su hermano.
Amémonos los unos a los otros
11 Este es el mensaje que han oído desde el principio: que nos amemos los unos a los otros. 12 No seamos como Caín que, por ser del maligno, asesinó a su hermano. ¿Y por qué lo hizo? Porque sus propias obras eran malas y las de su hermano, justas. 13 Hermanos, no se extrañen si el mundo los odia. 14 Nosotros sabemos que hemos pasado de la muerte a la vida porque amamos a nuestros hermanos. El que no ama permanece en la muerte. 15 Todo el que odia a su hermano es un asesino y ustedes saben que en ningún asesino permanece la vida eterna.
16 En esto conocemos lo que es el amor: en que Jesucristo entregó su vida por nosotros. Así también nosotros debemos entregar la vida por nuestros hermanos. 17 Si alguien que posee bienes materiales ve que su hermano está pasando necesidad y no tiene compasión de él, ¿cómo se puede decir que el amor de Dios habita en él? 18 Queridos hijos, no amemos de palabra ni de labios para afuera, sino con hechos y de verdad.
19 En esto sabremos que somos de la verdad y nos sentiremos seguros delante de él: 20 aunque nuestro corazón nos condene, Dios es más grande que nuestro corazón y lo sabe todo. 21 Queridos hermanos, si el corazón no nos condena y tenemos confianza delante de Dios, 22 recibimos todo lo que pedimos, porque obedecemos sus mandamientos y hacemos lo que le agrada. 23 Y este es su mandamiento: que creamos en el nombre de su Hijo Jesucristo y que nos amemos los unos a los otros, pues así lo ha dispuesto. 24 El que obedece sus mandamientos permanece en Dios y Dios en él. ¿Cómo sabemos que él permanece en nosotros? Por el Espíritu que nos dio.

3 See what great love(A) the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!(B) And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.(C) 2 Dear friends,(D) now we are children of God,(E) and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a](F) we shall be like him,(G) for we shall see him as he is.(H) 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves,(I) just as he is pure.(J)
4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.(K) 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins.(L) And in him is no sin.(M) 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning.(N) No one who continues to sin has either seen him(O) or known him.(P)
7 Dear children,(Q) do not let anyone lead you astray.(R) The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.(S) 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil,(T) because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God(U) appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.(V) 9 No one who is born of God(W) will continue to sin,(X) because God’s seed(Y) remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God(Z) are and who the children of the devil(AA) are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love(AB) their brother and sister.(AC)

11 For this is the message you heard(AD) from the beginning:(AE) We should love one another.(AF) 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one(AG) and murdered his brother.(AH) And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.(AI) 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,[b] if the world hates you.(AJ) 14 We know that we have passed from death to life,(AK) because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.(AL) 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister(AM) is a murderer,(AN) and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.(AO)
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.(AP) And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.(AQ) 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them,(AR) how can the love of God be in that person?(AS) 18 Dear children,(AT) let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.(AU)
19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends,(AV) if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God(AW) 22 and receive from him anything we ask,(AX) because we keep his commands(AY) and do what pleases him.(AZ) 23 And this is his command: to believe(BA) in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ,(BB) and to love one another as he commanded us.(BC) 24 The one who keeps God’s commands(BD) lives in him,(BE) and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.(BF)
