The Command to Love

3 Behold ^(A)what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that ^(B)we should be called children of ^[a]God! Therefore the world does not know ^[b]us, ^(C)because it did not know Him. ²Beloved, ^(D)now we are children of God; and ^(E)it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, ^(F)we shall be like Him, for ^(G)we shall see Him as He is. ³^(H)And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Sin and the Child of God

⁴Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and ^(I)sin is lawlessness. ⁵And you know ^(J)that He was manifested ^(K)to take away our sins, and ^(L)in Him there is no sin. ⁶Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.

⁷Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. ⁸^(M)He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, ^(N)that He might destroy the works of the devil. ⁹Whoever has been ^(O)born of God does not sin, for ^(P)His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.

The Imperative of Love^(Q)

¹⁰In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. ¹¹For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, ^(R)that we should love one another, ¹²not as ^(S)Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.

¹³Do not marvel, my brethren, if ^(T)the world hates you. ¹⁴We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love ^[c]his brother abides in death. ¹⁵^(U)Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that ^(V)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

The Outworking of Love

¹⁶^(W)By this we know love, ^(X)because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. ¹⁷But ^(Y)whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

¹⁸My little children, ^(Z)let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. ¹⁹And by this we ^[d]know ^(AA)that we are of the truth, and shall ^[e]assure our hearts before Him. ²⁰^(AB)For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. ²¹Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, ^(AC)we have confidence toward God. ²²And ^(AD)whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments ^(AE)and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. ²³And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ ^(AF)and love one another, as He gave ^[f]us commandment.

The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error

²⁴Now ^(AG)he who keeps His commandments ^(AH)abides in Him, and He in him. And ^(AI)by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

The Reign and Captivity of Jehoahaz^(A)

36 Then ^(B)the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father’s place in Jerusalem. ²^[a]Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. ³Now the king of Egypt deposed him at Jerusalem; and he imposed on the land a tribute of one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold. ⁴Then the king of Egypt made ^[b]Jehoahaz’s brother Eliakim king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. And Necho took ^[c]Jehoahaz his brother and carried him off to Egypt.

The Reign and Captivity of Jehoiakim^(C)

⁵^(D)Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And he did ^(E)evil in the sight of the Lord his God. ⁶^(F)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him, and bound him in ^[d]bronze fetters to ^(G)carry him off to Babylon. ⁷^(H)Nebuchadnezzar also carried off some of the articles from the house of the Lord to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon. ⁸Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, the abominations which he did, and what was found against him, indeed they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. Then ^[e]Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place.

The Reign and Captivity of Jehoiachin^(I)

⁹^(J)Jehoiachin was ^[f]eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months and ten days. And he did evil in the sight of the Lord. ¹⁰At the turn of the year ^(K)King Nebuchadnezzar summoned him and took him to Babylon, ^(L)with the costly articles from the house of the Lord, and made ^(M)Zedekiah,^[g] ^[h]Jehoiakim’s brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem.

Zedekiah Reigns in Judah^(N)

¹¹^(O)Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. ¹²He did evil in the sight of the Lord his God, and ^(P)did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke from the mouth of the Lord. ¹³And he also ^(Q)rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear an oath by God; but he ^(R)stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the Lord God of Israel. ¹⁴Moreover all the leaders of the priests and the people transgressed more and more, according to all the abominations of the nations, and defiled the house of the Lord which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.

The Fall of Jerusalem^(S)

¹⁵^(T)And the Lord God of their fathers sent warnings to them by His messengers, rising up early and sending them, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place. ¹⁶But ^(U)they mocked the messengers of God, ^(V)despised His words, and ^(W)scoffed at His prophets, until the ^(X)wrath of the Lord arose against His people, till there was no remedy.

¹⁷^(Y)Therefore He brought against them the king of the Chaldeans, who ^(Z)killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, on the aged or the weak; He gave them all into his hand. ¹⁸^(AA)And all the articles from the house of God, great and small, the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king and of his leaders, all these he took to Babylon. ¹⁹^(AB)Then they burned the house of God, broke down the wall of Jerusalem, burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all its precious possessions. ²⁰And ^(AC)those who escaped from the sword he carried away to Babylon, ^(AD)where they became servants to him and his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia, ²¹to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of ^(AE)Jeremiah, until the land ^(AF)had enjoyed her Sabbaths. As long as she lay desolate ^(AG)she kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.

The Proclamation of Cyrus^(AH)

²²^(AI)Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of ^(AJ)Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of ^(AK)Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,

²³^(AL)Thus says Cyrus king of Persia:

All the kingdoms of the earth the Lord God of heaven has given me. And He has commanded me to build Him a ^[i]house at Jerusalem which is in Judah. Who is among you of all His people? May the Lord his God be with him, and let him go up!

The Eternity of God, and Man’s Frailty

A Prayer ^(A)of Moses the man of God.

90 Lord, ^(B)You have been our ^[a]dwelling place in all generations.
²^(C)Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You ^[b]had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

³You turn man to destruction,
And say, ^(D)“Return, O children of men.”
⁴^(E)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
⁵You carry them away like a flood;
^(F)They are like a sleep.
In the morning ^(G)they are like grass which grows up:
⁶In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.

⁷For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.
⁸^(H)You have set our iniquities before You,
Our ^(I)secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
⁹For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
¹⁰The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
¹¹Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
¹²^(J)So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

¹³Return, O Lord!
How long?
And ^(K)have compassion on Your servants.
¹⁴Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
^(L)That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!
¹⁵Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us,
The years in which we have seen evil.
¹⁶Let ^(M)Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
¹⁷^(N)And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And ^(O)establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands.
