14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love the brothers and sisters. Whoever does not love abides in death.(A) 15 All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them.(B) 16 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers and sisters.(C) 17 How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?(D)

18 Little children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.(E)

What God Requires

“With what shall I come before the Lord
    and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
    with calves a year old?
Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
    with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
    the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”(A)
He has told you, O mortal, what is good,
    and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice and to love kindness
    and to walk humbly with your God?(B)
