God’s Children

28 So now, little children, remain in him so that when he appears(A) we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming.(B) 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right(C) has been born of him.(D)

See what great love[a] the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it didn’t know him. Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed.(E) We know that when he appears,[b] we will be like him(F) because we will see him as he is.(G) And everyone who has this hope(H) in him purifies himself just as he is pure.(I)

Everyone who commits sin practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed so that he might take away sins,[c](J) and there is no sin in him.(K) Everyone who remains in him(L) does not sin;[d](M) everyone who sins[e] has not seen him or known him.

Little children, let no one deceive you. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. The one who commits[f] sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God(N) was revealed(O) for this purpose: to destroy the devil’s works. Everyone who has been born of God(P) does not sin,[g] because his seed(Q) remains in him; he is not able to sin,[h] because he has been born of God. 10 This is how God’s children and the devil’s children become obvious. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love his brother or sister.(R)

Love in Action

11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another, 12 unlike Cain,(S) who was of the evil one(T) and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.

13 Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates(U) you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.(V) 15 Everyone who hates his brother or sister(W) is a murderer,(X) and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. 16 This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life(Y) for us.(Z) We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.(AA) 17 If anyone has this world’s goods(AB) and sees a fellow believer[i] in need(AC) but withholds compassion(AD) from him—how does God’s love reside in him?(AE) 18 Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.(AF)

19 This is how we will know that we belong to the truth(AG) and will reassure our hearts before him 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows all things.(AH)

21 Dear friends, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive whatever we ask from him because we keep his commands(AI) and do what is pleasing in his sight. 23 Now this is his command: that we believe in the name(AJ) of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps his commands remains in him,(AK) and he in him. And the way we know that he remains in us(AL) is from the Spirit(AM) he has given us.

Psalm 140

Prayer for Rescue

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

Rescue me, Lord, from evil men.
Keep me safe from violent men(A)
who plan evil in their hearts.
They stir up wars all day long.(B)
They make their tongues
as sharp as a snake’s bite;
viper’s venom is under their lips.(C)Selah

Protect me, Lord,
from the power of the wicked.(D)
Keep me safe from violent men
who plan to make me stumble.[a](E)
The proud hide a trap with ropes for me;
they spread a net along the path
and set snares for me.(F)Selah

I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”
Listen, Lord, to my cry for help.(G)
Lord, my Lord, my strong Savior,
you shield my head on the day of battle.(H)
Lord, do not grant the desires of the wicked;
do not let them achieve their goals.
Otherwise, they will become proud.(I)Selah

When those who surround me rise up,[b]
may the trouble their lips cause overwhelm them.(J)
10 Let hot coals fall on them.
Let them be thrown into the fire,
into the abyss, never again to rise.(K)
11 Do not let a slanderer stay in the land.
Let evil relentlessly[c] hunt down a violent man.(L)

12 I[d] know that the Lord upholds
the just cause of the poor,
justice for the needy.(M)
13 Surely the righteous will praise your name;
the upright will live in your presence.(N)

his favor is like a cloud with spring rain.
