¹⁹ They went out from us,^(A) but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.^(B)

³⁰ Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples^(A) after them.

¹⁹ No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.^(A)

¹⁹ These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.^(A)

¹³ Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.^(A)

²⁴ For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders^(A) to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

²⁰ The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. ²¹ But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.^(A)
