15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

15 (A)Do not love the world or the things in the world. (B)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, (C)the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And (D)the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

On Not Loving the World

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world.(A) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them.(B) 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,(C) the lust of the eyes,(D) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away,(E) but whoever does the will of God(F) lives forever.

Footnotes

  1. 1 John 2:15 Or world, the Father’s love

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 These are the evil things in the world: wanting things to please our sinful selves, wanting the sinful things we see, being too proud of the things we have. But none of those things comes from the Father. All of them come from the world. 17 The world is passing away. And everything that people want in the world is passing away. But the person who does what God wants lives forever.

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

16 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The World’s Hatred

18 (A)“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 (B)If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet (C)because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, (D)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. (E)If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But (F)all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 (G)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, (H)but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (I)He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them (J)the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have (K)seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, (L)‘They hated Me without a cause.’

The Coming Rejection

26 (M)“But when the [a]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, (N)He will testify of Me. 27 And (O)you also will bear witness, because (P)you have been with Me from the beginning.

Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples

16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you (Q)should not be made to stumble. (R)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming (S)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And (T)these things they will do [b]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when [c]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(A) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(B) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(C) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[a](D) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(E) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(F) for they do not know the one who sent me.(G) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(H) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(I) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(J) they would not be guilty of sin.(K) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(L) ‘They hated me without reason.’[b](M)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate(N) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(O)—the Spirit of truth(P) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(Q) 27 And you also must testify,(R) for you have been with me from the beginning.(S)

16 “All this(T) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(U) They will put you out of the synagogue;(V) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(W) They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(X) I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(Y) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(Z)

Jesus Warns His Followers

18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, then it would love you as it loves its own. But I have chosen you out of the world. So you don’t belong to it. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: A servant is not greater than his master. If people did wrong to me, they will do wrong to you, too. And if they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours, too. 21 They will do all this to you because of me. They don’t know the One who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates me also hates my Father. 24 I did works among them that no one else has ever done. If I had not done those works, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen what I did, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this happened so that what is written in their law would be true: ‘They hated me for no reason.’[a]

26 “I will send you the Helper[b] from the Father. He is the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father. When he comes, he will tell about me. 27 And you also must tell people about me because you have been with me from the beginning.

16 “I have told you these things to keep you from giving up. People will put you out of their synagogues. Yes, the time is coming when whoever kills you will think that he is offering service to God. They will do this because they have not known the Father and they have not known me. I have told you these things now. So when the time comes, you will remember that I warned you.
