Tron på Guds Son
5 Var och en som tror att Jesus är Kristus är född av Gud, och var och en som älskar Fadern älskar också hans barn. 2 Då vet vi att vi älskar Guds barn om vi älskar Gud och håller hans bud. 3 Detta är kärleken till Gud att vi håller hans bud. Och hans bud är inte tunga, 4 för alla som är födda av Gud övervinner världen. Detta är den seger som har övervunnit världen: vår tro. 5 Vem kan då övervinna världen? Bara den som tror att Jesus är Guds Son.
6 Han är den som kom genom vatten och blod, Jesus Kristus, inte bara genom vatten, utan genom både vatten och blod. Anden är den som vittnar, för Anden är sanningen. 7 Det är alltså tre som vittnar: 8 Anden, vattnet och blodet. Och alla tre är överens. 9 Om vi accepterar människors vittnesbörd är ju Guds vittnesbörd större, för det han har vittnat om är ett vittnesbörd om hans egen Son. 10 Den som tror på Guds Son har tagit emot vittnesbördet inom sig. Den som inte tror på Gud gör honom till lögnare, eftersom han inte tror på Guds vittnesbörd om hans egen son.
11 Och detta är vittnesbördet: att Gud har gett oss evigt liv och att det livet finns i hans Son. 12 Den som har Sonen äger livet, men den som inte har Guds Son har inte livet.
Avslutning
13 Detta har jag skrivit till er som tror på Guds Sons namn, för att ni ska veta att ni har evigt liv. 14 Detta är den frimodighet vi kan ha inför honom, att om vi ber honom om något i enlighet med hans vilja så hör han oss. 15 Och om vi vet att han hör oss, vad det än gäller, då vet vi också att vi får det vi har bett honom om.
16 Om någon ser en annan troende begå en synd som inte leder till döden så ska han be, och Gud ska ge den personen liv, åt dem som inte begår en dödssynd. Det finns synd som leder till döden, och jag säger inte att man ska be för dem som begår sådana synder. 17 All orättfärdighet är synd, men alla synder leder inte till döden.
18 Vi vet att ingen som är född av Gud fortsätter att synda, för han som är född av Gud skyddar dem, och den Onde kan inte röra dem. 19 Vi vet att vi är av Gud, och att hela världen är under den Ondes makt. 20 Vi vet också att Guds Son har kommit och gett oss förstånd, så att vi kan känna honom som är sann. Och nu lever vi i den Sanne, i hans Son, Jesus Kristus. Han är den sanne Guden och det eviga livet.

5 Var och en som tror att Jesus är Kristus, han är född av Gud; och var och en som älskar honom som födde, han älskar ock den som är född av honom.
2 Därför, när vi älska Gud och hålla hans bud, då veta vi att vi älska Guds barn.
3 Ty däri består kärleken till Gud, att vi hålla hans bud; och hans bud äro icke tunga.
4 Ty allt som är fött av Gud, det övervinner världen; och detta är den seger som har övervunnit världen: vår tro.
5 Vilken annan kan övervinna världen, än den som tror att Jesus är Guds Son?
6 Han är den som kom genom vatten och blod, Jesus Kristus, icke med vattnet allenast, utan med vattnet och blodet. Och Anden är den som vittnar, eftersom Anden är sanningen.
7 Ty tre äro de som vittna:
8 Anden, vattnet och blodet; och de tre vittna ett och detsamma.
9 Om vi taga människors vittnesbörd för gott, så må väl Guds vittnesbörd vara förmer. Detta är ju Guds vittnesbörd, att han har vittnat om sin Son.
10 Den som tror på Guds Son, han har vittnesbördet inom sig själv; den som icke tror Gud, han har gjort honom till en ljugare, eftersom han icke har trott på Guds vittnesbörd om sin Son.
11 Och detta är vittnesbördet: att Gud har givit oss evigt liv; och det livet är i hans Son.
12 Den som har Sonen, han har livet; den som icke har Guds Son, han har icke livet.
13 Detta har jag skrivit till eder, för att I skolen veta att I haven evigt liv, I som tron på Guds Sons namn.
14 Och detta är den fasta tillförsikt vi hava till honom, att om vi bedja om något efter hans vilja, så hör han oss.
15 Och om vi veta att han hör oss, vadhelst vi bedja om, så veta vi ock att vi redan hava det som vi hava bett honom om i vår bön.
16 Om någon ser sin broder begå en synd som icke är en synd till döds, då må han bedja, och så skall han giva honom liv, om nämligen synden icke är till döds. Det finnes synd till döds; för sådan säger jag icke att man skall bedja.
17 All orättfärdighet är synd; dock finnes det synd som icke är till döds.
18 Vi veta om var och en som är född av Gud att han icke syndar, ty den som har blivit född av Gud, han tager sig till vara, och den onde kommer icke vid honom.
19 Vi veta att vi äro av Gud, och att hela världen är i den ondes våld.
20 Och vi veta att Guds Son har kommit och givit oss förstånd, så att vi kunna känna den Sanne; och vi äro i den Sanne, i hans Son, Jesus Kristus. Denne är den sanne Guden och evigt liv.
21 Kära barn, tagen eder till vara för avgudarna.

Overcoming the World
5 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves the one born of the Father. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whoever is born of God overcomes the world, and the victory that overcomes the world is our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world, but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
The Witness Concerning the Son
6 This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. It is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 There are three who testify in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and the three are one. 8 There are three that testify on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are toward the one.[a] 9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God which He has given concerning His Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this witness in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he does not believe the testimony that God gave about His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life, and whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Purpose of Writing
13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. 14 This is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 So if we know that He hears whatever we ask, we know that we have whatever we asked of Him.
16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin which does not lead to death, he shall ask, and He shall give him life. This is for those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I do not say that he should pray for it. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is a sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that whoever is born of God does not keep on sinning. But whoever has been born of God guards himself, and the wicked one cannot touch him. 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in wickedness. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true—His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God
5 Everyone who believes(A) that Jesus is the Christ(B) is born of God,(C) and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.(D) 2 This is how we know(E) that we love the children of God:(F) by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands.(G) And his commands are not burdensome,(H) 4 for everyone born of God(I) overcomes(J) the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.(K)
6 This is the one who came by water and blood(L)—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. Concluding Affirmations
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God(V) so that you may know that you have eternal life.(W) 14 This is the confidence(X) we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.(Y) 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know(Z) that we have what we asked of him.(AA)
16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.(AB) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.(AC) I am not saying that you should pray about that.(AD) 17 All wrongdoing is sin,(AE) and there is sin that does not lead to death.(AF)
18 We know that anyone born of God(AG) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one(AH) cannot harm them.(AI) 19 We know that we are children of God,(AJ) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.(AK) 20 We know also that the Son of God has come(AL) and has given us understanding,(AM) so that we may know him who is true.(AN) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ.
