⁴ Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; ^(A)sin is lawlessness.

^17 (A)All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

²⁰ For ^(A)by works of the law no human being^[a] will be justified in his sight, since ^(B)through the law comes knowledge of sin.

²¹ I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those ^(A)who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, ^(B)sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced.

¹⁵ For ^(A)the law brings wrath, but ^(B)where there is no law ^(C)there is no transgression.

³¹ Because he has ^(A)despised the word of the Lord and has broken his commandment, that person shall be utterly cut off; his iniquity shall be on him.”

^8 (A)Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was ^(B)to destroy the works of the devil. ^9 (C)No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's^[a] seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

^11 (A)All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, ^(B)refusing to obey your voice. ^(C)And the curse and oath ^(D)that are written in the Law of ^(E)Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because ^(F)we have sinned against him.

⁹ But if you ^(A)show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. ¹⁰ For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point ^(B)has become guilty of all of it. ¹¹ For he who said, ^(C)“Do not commit adultery,” also said, ^(D)“Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
