^9 (A)He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.

Obedience by Faith

^20 (A)If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, ^[a]how can he love God ^(B)whom he has not seen?

¹¹ But he who ^(A)hates his brother is in darkness and ^(B)walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

¹³ Do not marvel, my brethren, if ^(A)the world hates you. ¹⁴ We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love ^[a]his brother abides in death. ^15 (B)Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that ^(C)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

The Outworking of Love

^16 (D)By this we know love, ^(E)because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. ¹⁷ But ^(F)whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

⁹ For he who lacks these things is ^(A)shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.

The Greatest Gift

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. ² And though I have the gift of ^(A)prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, ^(B)so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. ³ And ^(C)though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body ^[a]to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

⁴ He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a ^(A)liar, and the truth is not in him.

^6 (A)If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
