³ Now by this we know that we have come to know him, if we obey his commandments.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

¹⁵ “If you love me, you will keep^[a] my commandments.^(A)

¹⁰ If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.^(A)

³ For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,^(A)

The Two Foundations

⁴⁶ “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you?^(A)

¹⁴ You are my friends if you do what I command you.^(A)

¹³ By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

²² and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him.^(A)

²³ And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.^{(B) 24} All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.^(C)

⁴ Whoever says, “I have come to know him,” but does not obey his commandments is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist; ⁵ but whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we know that we are in him:^{(A) 6} whoever says, “I abide in him,” ought to walk in the same way as he walked.^(B)

²¹ They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me, and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.”^{(A) 22} Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” ²³ Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.^{(B) 24} Whoever does not love me does not keep my words, and the word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.^(C)
