17 Or avvenne che Davide dopo che si era stabilito nella sua casa disse al profeta Nathan: «Ecco, io abito in una casa di cedro mentre l'arca del patto dell'Eterno si trova sotto una tenda».
2 Nathan rispose a Davide: «Fa' tutto ciò che hai in cuore, perché Dio è con te».
3 Ma quella stessa notte la parola di DIO fu rivolta a Nathan, dicendo:
4 «Va' a dire al mio servo Davide "Cosí dice l'Eterno: Non sarai tu a costruirmi una casa in cui possa dimorare.
5 Infatti non ho mai abitato in una casa dal giorno in cui feci uscire Israele dall'Egitto fino ad oggi; ma sono andato di tenda in tenda e da una dimora all'altra.
6 Dovunque sono andato con tutto Israele, ho io mai parlato ad alcuno dei giudici d'Israele, ai quali avevo comandato di pascere il mio popolo, dicendo: "Perché non mi costruite una casa di cedro?".
7 Ora dunque parlerai cosí al mio servo Davide: "Cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti: lo ti presi dall'ovile, mentre seguivi le pecore, per costituirti principe sul mio popolo Israele.
8 Sono stato con te dovunque sei andato, ho sterminato davanti a te tutti i tuoi nemici e ho reso il tuo nome come quello dei grandi che sono sulla terra.
9 Inoltre assegnerò un posto al mio popolo Israele e lo pianterò perché abiti in casa sua e non sia piú sballottato, e i malvagi non continuino a devastarlo come prima,
10 fin da quando ho stabilito i giudici sul mio popolo Israele, Umilierò pure tutti i tuoi nemici. Inoltre ti annunzio che l'Eterno ti costruirà una casa.
11 Quando i tuoi giorni si compiranno e tu andrai a raggiungere i tuoi padri, io farò sorgere un tuo discendente, che sarà uno dei tuoi figli, e consoliderò il suo regno.
12 Egli mi costruirà una casa e io renderò saldo il suo trono per sempre.
13 lo sarò per lui un padre ed egli sarà per me un figlio; e non ritirerò da lui il mio favore come l'ho ritirato da colui che ti ha preceduto.
14 Io lo renderò saldo per sempre nella mia casa e nel mio regno, e il suo trono sarà reso stabile per sempre"».
15 Nathan parlò a Davide, secondo tutte queste parole e secondo tutta questa visione.
16 Allora il re Davide entrò, si sedette davanti all'Eterno e disse: «Chi sono io, o Eterno DIO, che cosa è la mia casa, perché tu mi abbia fatto arrivare fino qui?
17 Eppure questo è parso poca cosa ai tuoi occhi, o DIO; tu hai pure parlato della casa del tuo servo per un lontano avvenire e mi hai riguardato come se fossi un uomo di alto rango, o Eterno DIO.
18 Che cosa potrebbe ancora dirti Davide per l'onore fatto al tuo servo? Tu che conosci infatti il tuo servo.
19 O Eterno, per amore del tuo servo secondo il tuo cuore, hai compiuto tutto queste opere potenti per far conoscere tutte queste grandi cose.
20 O Eterno, nessuno è simile a te e non c'è altro DIO fuori di te, secondo tutto ciò che abbiamo udito con le nostre orecchie.
21 E chi è come il tuo popolo Israele l'unica nazione sulla terra che DIO sia venuto a redimere per farne il suo popolo, per farti un nome con cose grandi tremende, scacciando le nazioni davanti al tuo popolo che tu hai redento dall'Egitto?
22 Tu hai fatto del tuo popolo Israele tuo proprio popolo per sempre; e tu, Eterno, sei divenuto il loro DIO.
23 Or dunque, o Eterno, la parola che hai pronunciato riguardo al tuo servo alla sua casa rimanga stabile per sempre! Fa' come hai detto!
24 Sí, rimanga stabile, affinché il tuo nome sia magnificato per sempre e si possa dire: "L'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele, è veramente DIO per Israele"; e la casa del tuo servo Davide sia resa stabile davanti a te!
25 Poiché tu stesso, o mio DIO, hai rivelato al tuo servo che gli avresti costruito una casa. Per questo il tuo servo ha trovato il coraggio di pregare alla tua presenza.
26 E ora, o Eterno, tu Sei DIO e hai promesso questo bene al tuo servo.
27 Pertanto ti piaccia di benedire la casa del tuo servo, perché sussista per sempre davanti a te, perché ciò che tu benedici, o Eterno, è benedetto per sempre».

La profezia di Natan
17 Una volta stabilitosi in casa, Davide disse al profeta Natan: «Ecco, io abito una casa di cedro mentre l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore sta sotto una tenda». 2 Natan rispose a Davide: «Fà quanto desideri in cuor tuo, perché Dio è con te».
3 Ora in quella medesima notte questa parola di Dio fu rivolta a Natan: 4 «Và a riferire a Davide mio servo: Dice il Signore: Tu non mi costruirai la casa per la mia dimora. 5 Difatti io non ho mai abitato in una casa da quando feci uscire Israele dall'Egitto fino ad oggi. Io passai da una tenda all'altra e da una dimora all'altra. 6 Durante tutto il tempo in cui ho camminato insieme con tutto Israele non ho mai detto a qualcuno dei Giudici, ai quali avevo ordinato di pascere il mio popolo: Perché non mi avete costruito una casa di cedro? 7 Ora, riferirai al mio servo Davide: Dice il Signore degli eserciti: Io ti ho preso dal pascolo, mentre seguivi il gregge, per costituirti principe sul mio popolo Israele. 8 Sono stato con te in tutte le tue imprese; ho distrutto tutti i tuoi nemici davanti a te; renderò il tuo nome come quello dei più grandi personaggi sulla terra. 9 Destinerò un posto per il mio popolo Israele; ivi lo pianterò perché vi si stabilisca e non debba vivere ancora nell'instabilità e i malvagi non continuino ad angariarlo come una volta, 10 come quando misi i Giudici a capo di Israele. Umilierò tutti i tuoi nemici, mentre ingrandirò te. Il Signore ha intenzione di costruire a te una casa. 11 Quando i tuoi giorni saranno finiti e te ne andrai con i tuoi padri, susciterò un discendente dopo di te, uno dei tuoi figli, e gli renderò saldo il regno. 12 Costui mi costruirà una casa e io gli assicurerò il trono per sempre. 13 Io sarò per lui un padre e lui sarà per me un figlio; non ritirerò da lui il mio favore come l'ho ritirato dal tuo predecessore. 14 Io lo farò star saldo nella mia casa, nel mio regno; il suo trono sarà sempre stabile».
15 Natan riferì a Davide tutte queste parole e tutta la presente visione.
Preghiera di Davide
16 Allora il re Davide, presentatosi al Signore disse: «Chi sono io, Signore Dio, e che cos'è la mia casa perché tu mi abbia condotto fin qui? 17 E, quasi fosse poco ciò per i tuoi occhi, o Dio, ora parli della casa del tuo servo nel lontano avvenire; mi hai fatto contemplare come una successione di uomini in ascesa, Signore Dio! 18 Come può pretendere Davide di aggiungere qualcosa alla tua gloria? Tu conosci il tuo servo. 19 Signore, per amore del tuo servo e secondo il tuo cuore hai compiuto quest'opera straordinaria per manifestare tutte le tue meraviglie. 20 Signore, non esiste uno simile a te e non c'è Dio fuori di te, come abbiamo sentito con i nostri orecchi. 21 E chi è come il tuo popolo, Israele, l'unico popolo sulla terra che Dio sia andato a riscattare per farne un suo popolo e per procurarsi un nome grande e stabile? Tu hai scacciato le nazioni davanti al tuo popolo, che tu hai riscattato dall'Egitto. 22 Hai deciso che il tuo popolo Israele sia tuo popolo per sempre. Tu, Signore, sei stato il loro Dio. 23 Ora, Signore, la parola che hai pronunciata sul tuo servo e sulla sua famiglia resti sempre verace; fà come hai detto. 24 Sia saldo e sia sempre magnificato il tuo nome! Si possa dire: Il Signore degli eserciti è Dio per Israele! La casa di Davide tuo servo sarà stabile davanti a te. 25 Tu, Dio mio, hai rivelato al tuo servo l'intenzione di costruirgli una casa, per questo il tuo servo ha trovato l'ardire di pregare alla tua presenza. 26 Ora tu, Signore, sei Dio; tu hai promesso al tuo servo tanto bene. 27 Pertanto ti piaccia di benedire la casa del tuo servo perché sussista per sempre davanti a te, poiché quanto tu benedici è sempre benedetto».

17 Now (B)it came to pass, when David was dwelling in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under tent curtains.”
2 Then Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”
3 But it happened that night that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, 4 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “You shall (C)not build Me a house to dwell in. 5 For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought up Israel, even to this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another. 6 Wherever I have moved about with all Israel, have I ever spoken a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’ ” ’ 7 Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I took you (D)from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be [a]ruler over My people Israel. 8 And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have [b]made you a name like the name of the great men who are on the earth. 9 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will (E)plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 10 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel. Also I will subdue all your enemies. Furthermore I tell you that the Lord will build you a [c]house. 11 And it shall be, when your days are (F)fulfilled, when you must [d]go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your (G)seed after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 (H)He shall build Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 (I)I will be his Father, and he shall be My son; and I will not take My mercy away from him, (J)as I took it from him who was before you. 14 And (K)I will establish him in My house and in My kingdom forever; and his throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
15 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
16 (L)Then King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 17 And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O God; and You have also spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the rank of a man of high degree, O Lord God. 18 What more can David say to You for the honor of Your servant? For You know Your servant. 19 O Lord, for Your servant’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. 20 O Lord, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21 (M)And who is like Your people Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people—to make for Yourself a name by great and awesome deeds, by driving out nations from before Your people whom You redeemed from Egypt? 22 For You have made Your people Israel Your very own people forever; and You, Lord, have become their God.
23 “And now, O Lord, the word which You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house, let it be established forever, and do as You have said. 24 So let it be established, that Your name may be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God.’ And let the house of Your servant David be established before You. 25 For You, O my God, [e]have revealed to Your servant that You will build him a house. Therefore Your servant has found it in his heart to pray before You. 26 And now, Lord, [f]You are God, and have promised this goodness to Your servant. 27 Now You have been pleased to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You have blessed it, O Lord, and it shall be blessed forever.”

David’s Wish to Build a House for God(A)
17 When David was living in his house, he said to the prophet Nathan, “I’m living in a house made of cedar, while the ark of Yahweh’s promise is inside a tent.”
2 Nathan told David, “Do everything you have in mind, because Elohim is with you.”
3 But that same night Elohim spoke his word to Nathan: 4 “Say to David, my servant, ‘This is what Yahweh says: You must not build this house for me to live in. 5 I haven’t lived in a house from the day I brought Israel out of Egypt to this day, but I’ve gone from tent site to tent site, moving the tent of meeting from one location to another. 6 In all the places I’ve moved with all Israel, did I ever ask any of the judges of Israel whom I ordered to be shepherds of my people why they didn’t build me a house of cedar?’
7 “Now this is what you will say to my servant David: ‘This is what Yahweh Tsebaoth says: I took you from the pasture where you followed sheep so that you could be the leader of my people Israel. 8 I was with you wherever you went, and I destroyed all your enemies in front of you. I will make your name like the names of the greatest people on earth. 9 I will make a place for my people Israel and plant them there. They will live in their own place and not be troubled anymore. The wicked will no longer frighten them as they used to do 10 ever since I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. I will crush all your enemies. I even tell you that I, Yahweh, will build a house for you.
11 “‘When the time comes for you to go and be with your ancestors, I will send one of your descendants. He will be one of your sons. I will establish his kingdom. 12 He will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be his Ab, and he will be my Son. And I will never stop showing him my love as I did to your predecessor. 14 I will place him in my royal house forever, and his throne will be established forever.’”
15 Nathan told David all these words and everything he had seen.
16 Then King David went into the tent and sat in front of Yahweh. “Who am I, Yahweh Elohim,” he asked, “and why is my house so important that you have brought me this far? 17 And this you consider to be a small act, Elohim. You’ve spoken about the distant future of my house. Yahweh Elohim, you’ve shown me the generation of the great man.[a]
18 “What more can I do for you in light of the honor you have given to me and since you know me so well! 19 Yahweh, you’ve done this great thing for my sake and your own desire. You made this great thing known to me.
20 “Yahweh, there is no one like you, and there is no other god except you, as we have heard with our own ears. 21 Who is like your people Israel? It is the one nation on earth that Elohim came to free in order to make its people his own, to make your name known, and to do great and wonderful things for them. You forced the nations and their gods out of the way of your people, whom you freed from Egypt. 22 You made the people of Israel to be your people forever. And you, Yahweh, became their Elohim.
23 “Now, Yahweh, faithfully keep the promise you made to me and my house forever. Do as you promised. 24 Your name will endure and be respected forever when people say, ‘Yahweh Tsebaoth, the Elohim of Israel, is Israel’s Elohim.’ And the house of David, your servant, will be established in your presence. 25 You, my Elohim, have revealed especially to me that you will build me a house. That is why I have found the courage to pray to you.
26 “Yahweh, you are Elohim. You promised me this good thing. 27 Now, you were pleased to bless my house so that it may continue in your presence forever. Indeed, you, Yahweh, have blessed it. It will be blessed forever.”
