Imoralidad sa Loob ng Iglesya
5 Sa(A) katunayan ay nababalita na may pakikiapid sa inyo, at ang ganyang pakikiapid ay wala kahit sa mga pagano; sapagkat ang isang lalaki ay nakikipisan sa asawa ng kanyang ama.
2 At kayo ay nagmamalaki pa! Hindi ba dapat kayong malumbay, upang maalis sa gitna ninyo ang gumagawa nito?
3 Sapagkat bagaman ako ay wala sa katawan, ako'y nasa harapan ninyo sa espiritu. Kaya't tulad sa isang nasa harapan ninyo, hinahatulan ko na ang gumawa ng bagay na ito,
4 sa pangalan ng ating Panginoong Jesus. Kapag kayo ay nagkakatipon kasama ang aking espiritu na taglay ang kapangyarihan ng ating Panginoong Jesus,
5 ay ibigay ang ganyang tao kay Satanas sa ikawawasak ng laman, upang ang kanyang espiritu ay maligtas sa araw ng Panginoong Jesus.
6 Hindi(B) mabuti ang inyong pagmamapuri. Hindi ba ninyo nalalaman na ang kaunting pampaalsa ay nagpapaalsa sa buong masa?
7 Alisin(C) ninyo ang lumang pampaalsa, upang kayo'y maging bagong masa, kung paanong kayo nga'y walang pampaalsa. Sapagkat si Cristo, ang kordero ng ating paskuwa, ay naialay na.
8 Kaya(D) nga, ipagdiwang natin ang pista, hindi ng may lumang pampaalsa, o sa pampaalsa man ng masamang hangad at kasamaan, kundi sa tinapay na walang pampaalsa ng katapatan at katotohanan.
9 Isinulat ko sa inyo sa aking sulat na huwag kayong makisama sa mga mapakiapid,
10 hindi ang ibig sabihin ay sa mga mapakiapid ng sanlibutang ito, o sa mga masasakim at mga magnanakaw, o sa mga sumasamba sa diyus-diyosan, sa gayo'y kailangan pa kayong lumabas sa sanlibutan.
11 Kundi ngayon ay sinusulatan ko kayo na huwag kayong makisama sa kanino mang tinatawag na kapatid, kung siya'y mapakiapid, o sakim, o sumasamba sa diyus-diyosan, o nagmumura, o maglalasing, o magnanakaw—ni huwag man lamang kayong kumaing kasalo ng ganyang uri ng tao.
12 Sapagkat anong kinalaman ko sa paghatol sa nasa labas? Hindi ba yaong mga nasa loob ang inyong hahatulan?
13 Subalit(E) ang Diyos ang humahatol sa mga nasa labas. “Alisin ninyo ang masamang tao sa gitna ninyo.”

The Need for Church Discipline and Personal Sanctification
5 It is actually[a] reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and it is a kind of sexual immorality that not even the Gentiles practice: A man has his father’s wife! 2 Yet you are proud! Shouldn’t you have been filled with sorrow so that the man who did this deed would be removed from among you? 3 Even though I am absent in body, I am present in spirit, and as one who is present, I have already decided about the man who has done such a thing. 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, and my spirit is there, along with the power of our Lord Jesus,[b] 5 hand such a man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that the spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord Jesus.[c]
6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Purge out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch, just as you are unleavened. For our Passover lamb has been sacrificed, namely, Christ! 8 So let us keep celebrating the festival, not with old yeast, not with the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 When I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with the sexually immoral, 10 I did not at all mean the sexually immoral people of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, for then you would have to leave the world. 11 But in this situation, I wrote to you not to associate with anyone who is called a brother if he is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or verbally abusive, or a drunkard, or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person. 12 For what business is it of mine to judge people outside the church? Do you not judge those inside? 13 God will judge the people outside the church. “Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.”[d]

Immorality Rebuked
5 It is actually reported [everywhere] that there is sexual immorality among you, a kind of immorality that is condemned even among the [unbelieving] Gentiles: that someone [a]has [an intimate relationship with] his father’s wife.(A) 2 And you are proud and arrogant! You should have mourned in shame so that the man who has done this [disgraceful] thing would be removed from your fellowship!
3 For I, though absent [from you] in body but present in spirit, have already passed judgment on him who has committed this [act], as if I were present. 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I am with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to [b]hand over this man to Satan for the destruction of his body, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
6 Your boasting [over the supposed spirituality of your church] is not good [indeed, it is vulgar and inappropriate]. [c]Do you not know that [just] a little leaven ferments the whole batch [of dough, just as a little sin corrupts a person or an entire church]? 7 [d]Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new batch, just as you are, still unleavened. For Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore, let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with leaven of vice and malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and [untainted] truth.(B)
9 I wrote you in my [previous] letter not to associate with [sexually] immoral people— 10 not meaning the immoral people of this world, or the greedy ones and swindlers, or idolaters, for then you would have to get out of the world and human society altogether! 11 But actually, I have written to you not to associate with any so-called [Christian] brother if he is sexually immoral or greedy, or is an idolater [devoted to anything that takes the place of God], or is a reviler [who insults or slanders or otherwise verbally abuses others], or is a drunkard or a swindler—you must not so much as [e]eat with such a person.(C) 12 For what business is it of mine to judge outsiders (non-believers)? Do you not judge those who are within the church [to protect the church as the situation requires]? 13 God alone sits in judgment on those who are outside [the faith]. Remove the wicked one from among you [expel him from your church].(D)

- 1 Corinthians 5:5 Probably a call for the man to be excommunicated and removed from the safety and blessing of the church.

- 1 Corinthians 5:7 Paul is using the Passover celebration as an analogy. Leading up to the Passover meal was the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Ex 12:17-20), during which the Israelites were to remove all leaven from their homes to symbolize the removal of sin from their lives. Leaven (yeast) was often used as a symbol of spiritual corruption.
- 1 Corinthians 5:11 In ancient times eating together was an open display of friendship and acceptance of one another.
