Los derechos de un apóstol
9 ¿No soy libre? ¿No soy apóstol? ¿No he visto a Jesús nuestro Señor? ¿No son ustedes el fruto de mi trabajo en el Señor? 2 Aunque otros no me reconozcan como apóstol, para ustedes sí lo soy. Porque ustedes mismos son el sello de mi apostolado en el Señor.
3 Esta es mi defensa contra los que me critican: 4 ¿Acaso no tenemos derecho a comer y a beber? 5 ¿No tenemos derecho a viajar acompañados por una esposa creyente, como hacen los demás apóstoles y los hermanos del Señor y Cefas? 6 ¿O es que solo Bernabé y yo estamos obligados a ganarnos la vida con otros trabajos?
7 ¿Qué soldado presta servicio militar pagándose sus propios gastos? ¿Qué agricultor planta un viñedo y no come de sus uvas? ¿Qué pastor cuida un rebaño y no toma de la leche que ordeña? 8 No piensen que digo esto solamente desde un punto de vista humano. ¿No lo dice también la Ley? 9 Porque en la Ley de Moisés está escrito: «No pongas bozal al buey mientras esté sacando el grano».[a] ¿Acaso se preocupa Dios por los bueyes 10 o lo dice más bien por nosotros? Por supuesto que eso está escrito por nosotros, porque cuando el labrador ara y el segador saca el grano, deben hacerlo con la esperanza de participar de la cosecha. 11 Si hemos sembrado semilla espiritual entre ustedes, ¿será mucho pedir que cosechemos de ustedes lo material? 12 Si otros tienen derecho a este sustento de parte de ustedes, ¿no lo tendremos aún más nosotros?
Sin embargo, no ejercimos este derecho, sino que lo soportamos todo con tal de no crear obstáculo al evangelio de Cristo. 13 ¿No saben que los que sirven en el Templo reciben su alimento del Templo y que los que atienden el altar participan de lo que se ofrece en el altar? 14 Así también el Señor ha ordenado que quienes predican el evangelio vivan de este ministerio.
15 Pero no me he aprovechado de ninguno de estos derechos ni escribo de esta manera porque quiera reclamarlos. Prefiero morir a que alguien me prive de este motivo de orgullo. 16 Sin embargo, cuando predico acerca de las buenas noticias, no tengo de qué enorgullecerme, ya que estoy bajo la obligación de hacerlo. ¡Ay de mí si no predico las buenas noticias! 17 En efecto, si lo hiciera por mi propia voluntad, tendría recompensa; pero si lo hago por obligación, no hago más que cumplir la tarea que se me ha encomendado. 18 ¿Cuál es, entonces, mi recompensa? Pues que al predicar acerca de las buenas noticias pueda presentarlo gratuitamente, sin hacer valer mi derecho.
19 Aunque soy libre respecto a todos, de todos me he hecho esclavo para ganar a tantos como sea posible. 20 Entre los judíos me volví judío, a fin de ganarlos a ellos. Entre los que viven bajo la Ley me volví como los que están sometidos a ella (aunque yo mismo no vivo bajo la Ley), a fin de ganar a estos. 21 Entre los que no tienen la Ley me volví como los que están sin Ley (aunque no estoy libre de la Ley de Dios, sino comprometido con la ley de Cristo), a fin de ganar a los que están sin Ley. 22 Entre los débiles me hice débil, a fin de ganar a los débiles. Me hice todo para todos, a fin de salvar a algunos por todos los medios posibles. 23 Todo esto lo hago por causa del evangelio para participar de sus frutos.
24 ¿No saben que en una carrera todos los corredores compiten, pero solo uno obtiene el premio? Corran, pues, de tal modo que lo obtengan. 25 Todos los deportistas se entrenan con mucha disciplina. Ellos lo hacen para obtener una corona que se echa a perder; nosotros, en cambio, por una que dura para siempre. 26 Así que yo no corro como quien no tiene meta; no lucho como quien da golpes al aire. 27 Más bien, golpeo mi cuerpo y lo domino, no sea que después de haber predicado a otros, yo mismo quede descalificado.

9 Yo soy libre. Soy apóstol. He visto al Señor Jesús. Y gracias a mi trabajo, ahora ustedes son de Cristo. 2 Aunque otros piensen que no soy apóstol, para ustedes sí lo soy; ustedes son cristianos, y eso demuestra que realmente soy un apóstol.
3 A los que discuten conmigo, yo les respondo 4 que Bernabé y yo también tenemos derecho a recibir comida y bebida por el trabajo que hacemos. 5 También tenemos derecho a que nuestra esposa nos acompañe en nuestros viajes. Así lo hacen Pedro y los otros apóstoles, y los hermanos de Jesucristo. 6 ¿Acaso Bernabé y yo somos los únicos que estamos obligados a trabajar para vivir? 7 En el ejército, ningún soldado paga sus gastos. Los que cultivan uvas, comen de las uvas que recogen. Y los que cuidan cabras, toman de la leche que ordeñan. 8 Ésta no es una opinión mía, sino que así lo enseña la Biblia. 9 Porque en los libros que escribió Moisés leemos: «No impidan que el buey coma mientras desgrana el trigo.»[a] Y si la Biblia dice eso, no es porque Dios se preocupe de los bueyes, 10 sino porque se preocupa por nosotros. Tanto los que preparan el terreno como los que desgranan el trigo lo hacen con la esperanza de recibir parte de la cosecha. 11 De la misma manera, cuando nosotros les comunicamos a ustedes la buena noticia, es como si sembráramos en ustedes una semilla espiritual. Por eso, como recompensa por nuestro trabajo, tenemos derecho a que ustedes nos den lo necesario para vivir. 12 Si otros tienen ese derecho, con más razón lo tenemos nosotros. Pero no hemos hecho valer ese derecho, sino que todo lo hemos soportado, con tal de no crear problemas al anunciar la buena noticia de Cristo.
13 Ustedes saben que los que trabajan en el templo viven de lo que hay en el templo. Es decir, que los que trabajan en el altar del templo, comen de los animales que allí se sacrifican como ofrenda a Dios. 14 De la misma manera, el Señor Jesús mandó que los que anuncian la buena noticia vivan de ese mismo trabajo. 15 Sin embargo, yo nunca he reclamado ese derecho. Tampoco les escribo esto para que me den algo. ¡Prefiero morirme antes de que alguien me quite la satisfacción de ser apóstol sin sueldo!
16 Yo no anuncio la buena noticia de Cristo para sentirme importante. Lo hago porque Dios así me lo ordenó. ¡Y pobre de mí si no lo hago! 17 Yo no puedo esperar que se me pague por anunciar la buena noticia, pues no se me preguntó si quería hacerlo; ¡se me ordenó hacerlo! 18 Pero entonces, ¿qué gano yo con eso? ¡Nada menos que la satisfacción de poder anunciar la buena noticia, sin recibir nada a cambio! Es decir, anunciarla sin hacer valer mi derecho de vivir de mi trabajo como apóstol.
Esforcémonos para recibir nuestro premio
19 Aunque soy libre, vivo como si fuera el esclavo de todos. Así ayudo al mayor número posible de personas a creer en Cristo. 20 Cuando estoy con los judíos, vivo como judío, para ayudarlos a creer en Cristo. Por eso cumplo con la ley de Moisés, aunque en realidad no estoy obligado a hacerlo. 21 Y cuando estoy con los que no obedecen la ley de Moisés, vivo como uno de ellos, para ayudarlos a creer en Cristo. Esto no significa que yo no obedezca la ley de Dios. Al contrario, la obedezco, pues sigo la ley de Cristo. 22 Cuando estoy con los que apenas empiezan a ser cristianos, me comporto como uno de ellos para poder ayudarlos. Es decir, me he hecho igual a todos, para que algunos se salven. 23 Y todo esto lo hago porque amo la buena noticia, y porque quiero participar de sus buenos resultados.
24 Ustedes saben que, en una carrera, no todos ganan el premio, sino uno solo. Pues nuestra vida como seguidores de Cristo es como una carrera, así que vivamos bien para llevarnos el premio. 25 Los que se preparan para competir en un deporte, dejan de hacer todo lo que pueda perjudicarlos. ¡Y lo hacen para ganarse un premio que no dura mucho! Nosotros, en cambio, lo hacemos para recibir un premio que dura para siempre. 26 Yo me esfuerzo por recibirlo. Así que no lucho sin un propósito. 27 Al contrario, vivo con mucha disciplina y trato de dominarme a mí mismo. Pues si anuncio a otros la buena noticia, no quiero que al final Dios me descalifique a mí.

Para desgranar el trigo, el campesino usa bueyes, los cuales jalan una tabla que, por la parte de abajo, tiene trozos de metal o pequeñas piedras duras. 9 ·I am a free man [L Am I not free?]. ·I am [L Am I not…?] an apostle. ·I have [Haven’t I…?] seen Jesus our Lord. ·You people are all an example of [L Are you not…?] my work in the Lord. 2 If others do not accept me as an apostle, surely you do, because you are ·proof that I am an apostle [L the seal/verification of my apostleship] in the Lord.
3 This is the answer I give people who want to ·judge me [examine me; question my credentials]: 4 Do we not have the right to eat and drink [C receive hospitality and support for their missionary work]? 5 Do we not have the right to ·bring a believing wife with us when we travel [or be married to a believer; L take along a wife who is a sister] as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers [Matt. 13:55; Acts 1:14] and ·Peter [L Cephas; C Peter’s name in Aramaic; see 1:12]? 6 Are Barnabas [Acts 13—14] and I the only ones who ·must work to earn our living [L don’t have the authority/right not to work]? 7 ·No soldier [L Who…?] ever serves in the army and pays his own salary. ·No one [L Who…?] ever plants a vineyard without eating some of the grapes. ·No person [L Who…?] takes care of a flock without drinking some of the milk.
8 I do not say this ·by human authority [from human experience; L according to man]; God’s law also says the same thing. 9 [L For] It is written in the law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox when it is ·working in [treading; threshing] the grain [Deut. 25:4].” When God said this, was he ·thinking only [concerned] about oxen? No. 10 He was ·really [surely] talking ·about us [for our benefit]. Yes, that Scripture was written for us, because it goes on to say: “The one who plows and the one who ·works in the grain [threshes] should hope to get some of the grain for their work.” 11 ·Since [If] we ·planted [sowed] spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we should harvest material things from you [C receive support for ministry]? 12 If others have the right to get something from you, surely we have this right, ·too [or even more so]. But we ·do not use it [have not exercised this right]. No, we put up with everything ourselves so that we will not ·keep anyone from believing [L put up a hindrance to] the ·Good News [Gospel] of Christ. 13 ·Surely [L Don’t…?] you know that those who ·work at the Temple [perform priestly temple service] get their food from the Temple, and those who serve at the altar get part of what is offered at the altar. 14 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who ·tell the Good News [proclaim/preach the Gospel] should get their living from ·this work [L the Gospel].
15 But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this now to get anything from you. I would rather die than to have my reason for ·bragging [boasting] taken away. 16 ·Telling the Good News [Preaching the Gospel] does not give me any reason for ·bragging [boasting]. Telling the Good News is my duty—something I must do. And ·how terrible it will be for [L woe to] me if I do not ·tell the Good News [preach the Gospel]. 17 If I preach ·because it is my own choice [voluntarily], I have a reward. But if I preach ·and it is not my choice to do so [without volunteering], I am ·only doing the duty that was given to me [L entrusted with a stewardship/responsibility]. 18 So what ·reward [payment; wages] do I get? Only this: that when I tell the ·Good News [Gospel] I can offer it ·freely [free of charge]. I do not ·use [take advantage of; or misuse] my full rights in ·my work of preaching the Good News [L the Gospel].
19 I am free and belong to no one. But I make myself a slave to all people to win as many as I can. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew to win the Jews. I myself am not ·ruled by [subject to; L under] the law. But to those who are ·ruled by [subject to; L under] the law I became like a person who is ·ruled by [subject to; L under] the law. I did this to win those who are ·ruled by [subject to; L under] the law. 21 To those who are without the law [C Gentiles] I became like a person who is without the law. I did this to win those people who are without the law. (But really, I am not without God’s law—I am ·ruled by [L under] Christ’s law.) 22 To those who are weak [C in faith; 8:7–13], I became weak so I could win the weak. I have become all things to all people so I could save some of them in any way possible. 23 I do all this because of the ·Good News [Gospel] and so I can ·share in its blessings [or be a participant in it].
24 ·You [L Don’t you…?] know that in a ·race [L stadium] all the runners run, but only one gets the prize. So run to win! 25 All those who compete in the games ·use self-control [train with strict discipline] so they can win a ·crown [victor’s wreath]. That ·crown [victor’s wreath] is ·an earthly thing that lasts only a short time [L perishable], but our crown ·will never be destroyed [L is imperishable]. 26 So I do not run ·without a goal [aimlessly]. I fight like a boxer who is hitting something—not just the air. 27 I ·treat my body hard [discipline/subdue/pummel my body] and ·make it my slave [subdue it] so that I myself will not be disqualified after I have preached to others.

Paul’s Rights as an Apostle
9 Am I not free?(A) Am I not an apostle?(B) Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?(C) Are you not the result of my work in the Lord?(D) 2 Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal(E) of my apostleship in the Lord.
3 This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me. 4 Don’t we have the right to food and drink?(F) 5 Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife(G) along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers(H) and Cephas[a]?(I) 6 Or is it only I and Barnabas(J) who lack the right to not work for a living?
7 Who serves as a soldier(K) at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard(L) and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk? 8 Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.”[b](M) Is it about oxen that God is concerned?(N) 10 Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us,(O) because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest.(P) 11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?(Q) 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?
But we did not use this right.(R) On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder(S) the gospel of Christ.
13 Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar?(T) 14 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.(U)
15 But I have not used any of these rights.(V) And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me, for I would rather die than allow anyone to deprive me of this boast.(W) 16 For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach.(X) Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward;(Y) if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me.(Z) 18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge,(AA) and so not make full use of my rights(AB) as a preacher of the gospel.
Paul’s Use of His Freedom
19 Though I am free(AC) and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone,(AD) to win as many as possible.(AE) 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews.(AF) To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law),(AG) so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law(AH) (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law),(AI) so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak.(AJ) I have become all things to all people(AK) so that by all possible means I might save some.(AL) 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
The Need for Self-Discipline
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?(AM) Run(AN) in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown(AO) that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.(AP) 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly;(AQ) I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.(AR) 27 No, I strike a blow to my body(AS) and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.(AT)
