El mal ejemplo de Israel
10 Hermanos, quiero que recuerden que todos nuestros antepasados estuvieron bajo la nube[a] y que todos atravesaron el mar Rojo. 2 Fue como si todos hubieran sido bautizados en la nube y en el mar para ser seguidores de Moisés. 3 Todos comieron el mismo alimento espiritual, 4 y bebieron la misma bebida espiritual. Bebieron de la roca espiritual que iba con ellos, y la roca era Cristo. 5 Pero Dios no estaba contento con muchos de ellos, por eso sus cuerpos quedaron tendidos por el desierto.
6 Todo eso sucedió para servirnos de ejemplo, para que no deseemos lo malo, como ellos. 7 (A)No adoremos ídolos, como hicieron algunos de ellos. Así está escrito: «Todos se reunieron a comer y a beber y luego empezaron a parrandear».[b] 8 No cometamos inmoralidades sexuales, como hicieron muchos de ellos. En un solo día murieron 23 000 de ellos por culpa de esa inmoralidad. 9 No pongamos a prueba a Cristo[c] como lo hicieron algunos de ellos, quienes murieron víctimas de las serpientes. 10 No nos quejemos, como se quejaron algunos y por eso el ángel de la muerte los mató.
11 Todo eso sucedió para servirnos de ejemplo, y fue escrito como advertencia para nosotros que vivimos en los últimos tiempos. 12 Así que, el que se sienta muy seguro y firme, cuídese de no caer. 13 Ustedes sólo han tenido las mismas tentaciones que todos los demás. Pero Dios es fiel y no va a dejar que sean tentados más allá de lo que puedan soportar. Así que sepan que cuando sean tentados, van a poder soportar, porque Dios les dará una salida.
14 Por eso, estimados hermanos, ni se les ocurra adorar ídolos. 15 Les hablo como a gente con la que se puede razonar, juzguen ustedes mismos lo que les digo. 16 Ciertamente, beber de la copa de bendición[d] por la que damos gracias, ¿no es compartir la sangre de Cristo? Y comer del pan que partimos, ¿no es compartir el cuerpo de Cristo? 17 Existe un solo pan y nosotros somos muchos. Eso significa que cuando todos comemos y compartimos ese pan, formamos un solo cuerpo.
18 Fíjense en lo que ocurre cuando el pueblo de Israel ofrece sacrificios. Cuando comen la carne sacrificada en el altar, ¿acaso no la están compartiendo con Dios? 19 No estoy diciendo que los sacrificios a los ídolos tienen algún valor ni que los ídolos mismos lo tengan. 20 No, porque esos sacrificios se ofrecen a los demonios, no a Dios, y no quiero que ustedes compartan con los demonios. 21 Ustedes no pueden beber de la copa del Señor y, a la vez, de la copa de los demonios. No pueden compartir de la mesa del Señor y, a la vez, de la mesa de los demonios. 22 ¿Acaso queremos provocar los celos del Señor[e]? No somos más fuertes que él, ¿verdad?
Libres para dar gloria a Dios
23 Se dice: «Todo está permitido», pero no todo es bueno. «Todo está permitido», pero no todo es beneficioso. 24 Que nadie busque su provecho personal, sino el beneficio de los demás.
25 Coman cualquier carne que se venda en la carnicería, sin preguntar si se debe comer o no. 26 (B)Pues «la tierra, y todo lo que hay en ella, pertenece al Señor».[f]
27 Si alguien que no cree en Cristo los invita a comer y ustedes deciden ir, coman de todo lo que les den, sin preguntar si se debe comer o no. 28 Pero si alguien les dice: «Esta carne es una ofrenda para un ídolo», no coman nada, por el bien de quien se lo dijo, y por lo que pueda pensar. 29 No digo que ustedes piensen que no se debe hacer, sino que la otra persona supone que ustedes no deben hacer eso.
Pero alguno puede preguntar ¿por qué ha de ser juzgada mi propia libertad por lo que otra persona piense que está mal? 30 Si doy gracias por lo que como, ¿por qué se me ha de criticar por comer? 31 Porque lo importante es glorificar a Dios en todo, ya sea al comer, al beber o al hacer cualquier otra cosa. 32 No hagan nada que ofenda a los demás: ni a los judíos, ni a los que no son judíos[g], ni a los de la iglesia de Dios. 33 Más bien, hagan lo que hago yo: siempre trato de agradar a todos con lo que hago, no busco mis propios intereses, sino los de la mayoría, para que sean salvos.

Warnings From Israel’s History
10 For I do not want you to be ignorant(A) of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud(B) and that they all passed through the sea.(C) 2 They were all baptized into(D) Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food(E) 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock(F) that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.(G)
6 Now these things occurred as examples(H) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters,(I) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](J) 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(K) 9 We should not test Christ,[b](L) as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.(M) 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did(N)—and were killed(O) by the destroying angel.(P)
11 These things happened to them as examples(Q) and were written down as warnings for us,(R) on whom the culmination of the ages has come.(S) 12 So, if you think you are standing firm,(T) be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful;(U) he will not let you be tempted[d] beyond what you can bear.(V) But when you are tempted,[e] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Idol Feasts and the Lord’s Supper
14 Therefore, my dear friends,(W) flee from idolatry.(X) 15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break(Y) a participation in the body of Christ?(Z) 17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body,(AA) for we all share the one loaf.
18 Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices(AB) participate in the altar? 19 Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?(AC) 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons,(AD) not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.(AE) 22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy?(AF) Are we stronger than he?(AG)
The Believer’s Freedom
23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.(AH) “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.(AI)
25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,(AJ) 26 for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”[f](AK)
27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you(AL) without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.(AM) 29 I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom(AN) being judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?(AO)
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.(AP) 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble,(AQ) whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God(AR)— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way.(AS) For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many,(AT) so that they may be saved.(AU)

10 Brethren, I will not, that ye not know [Soothly, brethren, I will not you to unknow], that all our fathers were under [a] cloud, and all passed the sea;
2 and all were baptized in Moses, in the cloud and in the sea;
3 and all ate the same spiritual meat,
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink; and they drank of the spiritual stone following them [forsooth they drank of the spiritual stone following them]; and the stone was Christ.
5 But not in full many of them it was well pleasant to God; for why they were cast down in [the] desert.
6 But these things were done in figure of us, that we be not coveters of evil things, as [and] they coveted.
7 Neither be ye made idolaters, as some of them; as it is written, The people sat to eat and drink, and they rose up to play [and they have risen up to play].
8 Neither do we fornication, as some of them did fornication, and three and twenty thousand were dead in one day [and three and twenty thousand fell, or died, in one day].
9 Neither tempt we Christ, as some of them tempted, and perished of serpents.
10 Neither grumble ye, as some of them grumbled, and they perished of a destroyer. [Neither grutch ye, as some of them grutched, and they perished of the waster, or destroyer.]
11 And all these things fell to them in figure; but they be written to our amending, into whom the ends of the worlds be come [soothly they be written to our correction, or amending, into whom the ends of the world have come].
12 Therefore he that guesseth him(self), that he standeth, see he, that he fall not. [And so he that guesseth him to stand, see, that he fall not.]
13 Temptation take not you, but man's temptation; for God is true, which shall not suffer you to be tempted above that that ye be able; but he shall make with temptation also purveyance, that ye be able to suffer [that ye may sustain].
14 Wherefore, ye most dear-worthy to me, flee ye from the worshipping of maumets [flee from worshipping of idols].
15 As to prudent men I speak, deem ye yourselves that thing that I say.
16 Whether the cup of blessing which we bless, is not the communing of Christ's blood? and whether the bread which we break, is not the part taking of the body of the Lord? [The cup of blessing which we bless, whether it is not the communing of Christ's blood? and the bread which we break, whether it is not the dealing, or part taking, of the body of the Lord?]
17 For we many be one bread and one body, all we that take part of one bread and of one cup.
18 See ye Israel after the flesh, whether they that eat sacrifices, be not partners of the altar?
19 What therefore say I, that a thing that is offered to idols is any thing, or that the idol is any thing?
20 But those things that heathen men offer, they offer to devils, and not to God. But I will not, that ye be made fellows of fiends;
21 for ye be not able to drink the cup of the Lord [for ye may not drink the cup of the Lord], and the cup of fiends; ye be not able to be partners of the board of the Lord [ye may not be partners of the board of the Lord], and of the board of fiends.
22 Whether we have envy to the Lord? whether we be stronger than he?
23 All things be leaveful to me, but not all things be speedful. All things be leaveful to me, but not all things edify.
24 No man seek that thing that is his own, but that thing that is of another.
25 All thing that is sold in the butchery, eat ye, asking nothing for conscience.
26 The earth and the plenty of it, is the Lord's.
27 If any of heathen men call you to supper [Forsooth if any of unfaithful, or heathen men, calleth you to supper], and ye will go, all thing that is set to you, eat ye, asking nothing for conscience.
28 But if any man saith [If any man soothly say to you], This thing is offered to idols, do not ye eat, for him that showed [this thing], and for conscience;
29 and I say not, thy conscience, but of another [man's]. But whereto is my freedom deemed of another man's conscience [Soothly whereto is my liberty, or freedom, deemed of another man's conscience]?
30 Therefore if I take part with grace, what am I blasphemed, for that that I do thankings [for that that I do graces, or thankings]?
31 Therefore whether ye eat, or drink, or do any other thing, do ye all things to the glory of God.
32 Be ye without offence to Jews, and to heathen men, and to the church of God;
33 as [and] I by all things please to all men, not seeking that that is profitable to me [not seeking what is profitable to me], but that that is profitable to many men, that they be made safe.
