8 论到祭偶像之物,我们晓得“我们都有知识”。但知识是叫人自高自大,唯有爱心能造就人。 2 若有人以为自己知道什么,按他所当知道的,他仍是不知道。 3 若有人爱神,这人乃是神所知道的。 4 论到吃祭偶像之物,我们知道偶像在世上算不得什么,也知道神只有一位,再没有别的神。 5 虽有称为神的,或在天或在地,就如那许多的神、许多的主, 6 然而我们只有一位神,就是父,万物都本于他,我们也归于他。并有一位主,就是耶稣基督,万物都是借着他有的,我们也是借着他有的。 7 但人不都有这等知识。有人到如今因拜惯了偶像,就以为所吃的是祭偶像之物;他们的良心既然软弱,也就污秽了。 8 其实食物不能叫神看中我们,因为我们不吃也无损,吃也无益。
门徒不可借自由成别人的绊脚石
9 只是你们要谨慎,恐怕你们这自由竟成了那软弱人的绊脚石。 10 若有人见你这有知识的在偶像的庙里坐席,这人的良心若是软弱,岂不放胆去吃那祭偶像之物吗? 11 因此,基督为他死的那软弱弟兄,也就因你的知识沉沦了。 12 你们这样得罪弟兄们,伤了他们软弱的良心,就是得罪基督。 13 所以,食物若叫我弟兄跌倒,我就永远不吃肉,免得叫我弟兄跌倒了。

传福音的当靠福音养生
13 你们岂不知为圣事劳碌的,就吃殿中的物吗?伺候祭坛的,就分领坛上的物吗? 14 主也是这样命定,叫传福音的靠着福音养生。 15 但这权柄我全没有用过。我写这话,并非要你们这样待我,因为我宁可死,也不叫人使我所夸的落了空。 16 我传福音原没有可夸的,因为我是不得已的;若不传福音,我便有祸了。 17 我若甘心做这事,就有赏赐;若不甘心,责任却已经托付我了。 18 既是这样,我的赏赐是什么呢?就是我传福音的时候,叫人不花钱得福音,免得用尽我传福音的权柄。 19 我虽是自由的,无人辖管,然而我甘心做了众人的仆人,为要多得人。 20 向犹太人,我就做犹太人,为要得犹太人。向律法以下的人,我虽不在律法以下,还是做律法以下的人,为要得律法以下的人。 21 向没有律法的人,我就做没有律法的人,为要得没有律法的人;其实我在神面前不是没有律法,在基督面前正在律法之下。 22 向软弱的人,我就做软弱的人,为要得软弱的人。向什么样的人,我就做什么样的人,无论如何总要救些人。 23 凡我所行的,都是为福音的缘故,为要与人同得这福音的好处。
当为不坏的冠冕赛跑
24 岂不知在场上赛跑的都跑,但得奖赏的只有一人?你们也当这样跑,好叫你们得着奖赏。 25 凡较力争胜的,诸事都有节制。他们不过是要得能坏的冠冕,我们却是要得不能坏的冠冕。 26 所以,我奔跑不像无定向的,我斗拳不像打空气的。 27 我是攻克己身,叫身服我,恐怕我传福音给别人,自己反被弃绝了。

祭偶像的食物
8 關於獻給偶像的祭物,我們知道大家都有這方面的知識,但知識會使人自高,唯有愛心才能造就人。 2 若有人自以為知道些什麼,其實他需要知道的,他還不知道。 3 但如果有人愛上帝,這人是上帝所認識的。
4 論到吃獻給偶像的祭物,我們知道世上的偶像算不得什麼,只有一位上帝,此外別無他神。 5 雖然天上地上有許多被稱為神的,好像有許多神、許多主, 6 但我們只有一位神,就是父上帝,祂是萬物的源頭,是我們的歸宿。我們也只有一位主,就是耶穌基督,萬物都是藉著祂存在,我們也是藉著祂存在。
7 不過,並不是所有的人都有這種知識。有些人因為以前拜慣了偶像,現在吃到某些食物就覺得是祭過偶像的,因而良心不安,覺得自己被玷污了。 8 其實食物並不能改變上帝對我們的看法,我們不吃也沒有損失,吃了也不會更好。

使徒的權利
9 我不是自由的嗎?我不是使徒嗎?我不是見過我們的主耶穌嗎?你們不是我在主裡工作的成果嗎? 2 即使對別人來說我不是使徒,對你們來說我也是使徒,因為你們就是我在主裡作使徒的印證。
3 對那些責難我的人,我的答覆是這樣: 4 難道我們沒有權利接受弟兄姊妹供應的飲食嗎? 5 難道我們沒有權利像主的兄弟、彼得和其他使徒一樣,娶信主的姊妹為妻,一同出入嗎? 6 難道只有我和巴拿巴要自食其力嗎? 7 有誰當兵要自備糧餉呢?有誰栽種葡萄園,卻不吃園中出產的葡萄呢?有誰牧養牛羊,卻不喝牛羊的奶呢?

13 你們難道不知道,在聖殿裡事奉的人可以吃聖殿裡的食物,在祭壇前事奉的人可以分享祭壇上的祭物嗎? 14 同樣,主也曾吩咐:傳福音的人理當藉著福音得到生活的供應。

24 你們不知道嗎?在運動場上賽跑的人雖然個個都在跑,但冠軍只有一個。同樣,你們也要努力奔跑,好獲得獎賞。 25 參加比賽的選手要接受嚴格的訓練,以求贏得桂冠,但這桂冠終必朽壞,我們要贏得的卻是永不朽壞的桂冠。 26 因此,我奔跑不是漫無目標,我擊拳不是打空氣。 27 我嚴格訓練自己,克服自身的軟弱,免得我傳福音給別人,自己卻被淘汰了。

Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols
8 Now concerning food sacrificed to idols, we know that “we all have knowledge.”[a] Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2 If anyone thinks he knows anything, he has not yet known as it is necessary to know. 3 But if anyone loves God, this one is known by him.
4 Therefore, concerning the eating of food sacrificed to idols, we know that “an idol is nothing in the world” and that “there is no God except one.”[b] 5 For even if after all there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, just as there are many gods and many lords,
6 yet to us there is one God, the Father,
from whom are all things, and we are for him,
and there is one Lord, Jesus Christ,
through whom are all things, and we are through him.
7 But this knowledge is not in everyone. But some, being accustomed until now to the idol, eat this food as food sacrificed to idols, and their conscience, because it[c] is weak, is defiled. 8 But food does not bring us close to God. For neither if we eat do we have more, nor if we do not eat do we lack.[d] 9 But watch out lest somehow this right of yours becomes a cause for stumbling to the weak. 10 For if someone should see you who has knowledge reclining for a meal in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, because it[e] is weak, be strengthened so that he eats the food sacrificed to idols? 11 For the one who is weak—the brother for whom Christ died—is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 Now if you[f] sin in this way against the brothers and wound their conscience, which is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat forever[g], in order that I may not cause my brother to sin.
Paul Gives Up His Rights as an Apostle
9 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? 2 If to others I am not an apostle, yet indeed I am to you, for you are my seal of apostleship in the Lord. 3 My defense to those who examine me is this: 4 Do we not have the right to eat and drink? 5 Do we not have the right to take along a sister as wife, like the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? 6 Or do only I and Barnabas not have the right to refrain from working[h]? 7 Who ever serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat the fruit of it? Who[i] shepherds a flock and does not drink[j] from the milk of the flock? 8 I am not saying these things according to a human perspective. Or does the law not also say these things? 9 For in the law of Moses it is written, “You must not muzzle an ox while it[k] is threshing.”[l] It is not about oxen God is concerned, is it?[m] 10 Or doubtless does he speak for our sake[n]? For it is written for our sake[o], because the one who plows ought to plow in hope and the one who threshes ought to do so in hope of a share. 11 If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too great a thing if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this right over you, do we not do so even more? Yet we have not made use of this right, but we endure all things, in order that we may not cause any hindrance to the gospel of Christ.
13 Do you not know that those performing the holy services eat the things from the temple, and those attending to the altar have a share with the altar? 14 In the same way also the Lord ordered those who proclaim the gospel to live from the gospel. 15 But I have not made use of any of these rights. And I am not writing these things in order that it may be thus with me. For it would be better to me rather to die than for anyone to deprive me of my reason for boasting. 16 For if I proclaim the gospel, it is not to me a reason for boasting, for necessity is imposed on me. For woe is to me if I do not proclaim the gospel. 17 For if I do this voluntarily, I have a reward, but if I do so unwillingly, I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What then is my reward? That when I[p] proclaim the gospel, I may offer the gospel free of charge, in order not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
19 For although I[q] am free from all people, I have enslaved myself to all, in order that I may gain more. 20 I have become like a Jew to the Jews, in order that I may gain the Jews. To those under the law I became as under the law (although I[r] myself am not under the law) in order that I may gain those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as outside the law (although I[s] am not outside the law of God, but subject to the law of Christ) in order that I may gain those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, in order that I may gain the weak. I have become all things to all people, in order that by all means I may save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, in order that I may become a participant with it.
24 Do you not know that those who run in the stadium all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25 And everyone who competes exercises self-control in all things. Thus those do so in order that they may receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one. 26 Therefore I run in this way, not as running aimlessly; I box in this way, not as beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and subjugate it, lest somehow after[t] preaching to others, I myself should become disqualified.

Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols
8 Now about food sacrificed to idols:(A) We know that “We all possess knowledge.”(B) But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2 Those who think they know something(C) do not yet know as they ought to know.(D) 3 But whoever loves God is known by God.[a](E)
4 So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols:(F) We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world”(G) and that “There is no God but one.”(H) 5 For even if there are so-called gods,(I) whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6 yet for us there is but one God,(J) the Father,(K) from whom all things came(L) and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord,(M) Jesus Christ, through whom all things came(N) and through whom we live.
7 But not everyone possesses this knowledge.(O) Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak,(P) it is defiled. 8 But food does not bring us near to God;(Q) we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
9 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block(R) to the weak.(S) 10 For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?(T) 11 So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed(U) by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against them(V) in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.(W) 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.(X)
Paul’s Rights as an Apostle
9 Am I not free?(Y) Am I not an apostle?(Z) Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?(AA) Are you not the result of my work in the Lord?(AB) 2 Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal(AC) of my apostleship in the Lord.
3 This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me. 4 Don’t we have the right to food and drink?(AD) 5 Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife(AE) along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers(AF) and Cephas[b]?(AG) 6 Or is it only I and Barnabas(AH) who lack the right to not work for a living?
7 Who serves as a soldier(AI) at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard(AJ) and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk? 8 Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.”[c](AK) Is it about oxen that God is concerned?(AL) 10 Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us,(AM) because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest.(AN) 11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?(AO) 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?
But we did not use this right.(AP) On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder(AQ) the gospel of Christ.
13 Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar?(AR) 14 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.(AS)
15 But I have not used any of these rights.(AT) And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me, for I would rather die than allow anyone to deprive me of this boast.(AU) 16 For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach.(AV) Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward;(AW) if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me.(AX) 18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge,(AY) and so not make full use of my rights(AZ) as a preacher of the gospel.
Paul’s Use of His Freedom
19 Though I am free(BA) and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone,(BB) to win as many as possible.(BC) 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews.(BD) To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law),(BE) so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law(BF) (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law),(BG) so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak.(BH) I have become all things to all people(BI) so that by all possible means I might save some.(BJ) 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
The Need for Self-Discipline
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?(BK) Run(BL) in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown(BM) that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.(BN) 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly;(BO) I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.(BP) 27 No, I strike a blow to my body(BQ) and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.(BR)
