⁸But food doesn't bring us any closer to God. We are no worse off if we don't eat, and we are no better off if we do.

⁹Don't cause problems for someone with a weak conscience, just because you have the right to eat anything. ¹⁰You know all this, and so it doesn't bother you to eat in the temple of an idol. But suppose a person with a weak conscience sees you and decides to eat food that has been offered to idols.

⁸^(A)Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. ⁹But take care ^(B)that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block ^(C)to the weak. ¹⁰For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating^[a] in an idol's temple, will he not be encouraged,^[b] if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols?

⁹Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block^(B) to the weak.^(C) ¹⁰For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?^(D)
