Immoral Church Members

5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality^(A) among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated^[a] among the Gentiles^(B)—a man is sleeping with his father’s wife.^{(C) 2} And you are arrogant! Shouldn’t you be filled with grief^(D) and remove from your congregation the one who did this? ³ Even though I am absent in the body, I am present in spirit.^(E) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who has been doing such a thing. ⁴ When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I am with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, ⁵ hand that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh,^(F) so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.^(G)

⁶ This punishment by the majority is sufficient for that person. ⁷ As a result, you should instead forgive^(A) and comfort him. Otherwise, he may be overwhelmed by excessive grief. ⁸ Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.

¹⁵ But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into him who is the head^(A)—Christ.

²⁶ Be angry and do not sin.^[a](A) Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, ²⁷ and don’t give the devil an opportunity.

³¹ Let all bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander be removed from you, along with all malice. ³² And be kind^(A) and compassionate^(B) to one another, forgiving^(C) one another, just as God also forgave you^[a] in Christ.

²⁷ God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ^(A) in you, the hope^(B) of glory. ²⁸ We proclaim him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

¹⁴ If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take note of that person; don’t associate with him, so that he may be ashamed. ¹⁵ Yet don’t consider him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.

¹⁹ My brothers and sisters, if any among you strays from the truth,^(A) and someone turns him back,^{(B) 20} let that person know that whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.^(C)

¹⁵ but in your hearts regard^[a] Christ^[b] the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.^{(A) 16} Yet do this with gentleness and reverence, keeping a clear conscience,^(B) so that when you are accused,^[c] those who disparage your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame.
