Beschrijving van echte liefde
13 Stel dat ik de talen van de mensen en van de engelen kon spreken. Maar als ik dat zonder liefde deed, was het alleen maar lawaai. 2 Stel dat ik kon profeteren, al Gods verborgen plannen kende, alles wist wat er te weten valt en zoveel geloof had dat ik bergen kon verplaatsen. Maar als ik dat zonder liefde deed, stelde ik niets voor. 3 Stel dat ik alles wat ik had weggaf aan de arme mensen, en stel dat ik er trots op kon zijn dat ik mijn lichaam opofferde vanwege mijn geloof in de Heer. Maar als ik dat zonder liefde deed, had ik er niets aan.
4 De liefde is geduldig en vriendelijk. Liefde wordt niet jaloers. Liefde schept niet op en vindt zichzelf niet vreselijk belangrijk. 5 Liefde zegt of doet geen onaardige dingen en denkt niet alleen maar aan zichzelf. Liefde raakt niet verbitterd. Liefde vergeeft als een ander iets verkeerds heeft gedaan. 6 Liefde is niet blij met oneerlijke dingen, maar met de waarheid. 7 Liefde vertelt fouten van andere mensen niet door, denkt altijd het beste van een ander en blijft altijd geduldig. 8 De liefde schiet nooit tekort en verdwijnt nooit.
Maar profetieën zullen op een dag niet meer nodig zijn. Talen van de Geest zullen er niet meer zijn. Kennis zal onbelangrijk worden. 9 Want nu zijn onze kennis en ons profeteren nog onvolmaakt. 10 Maar als het volmaakte gekomen zal zijn, worden alle onvolmaakte dingen weggedaan. 11 Je kan het hiermee vergelijken: Toen ik nog een kind was, praatte ik als een kind, reageerde ik als een kind, dacht ik als een kind. Nu ik een man ben geworden, heb ik de kinderlijke manieren van doen weggedaan. 12 Nu is het nog net alsof we in een beslagen spiegel kijken en niet precies weten wat we zien. Maar straks zullen we God in de ogen kijken. Nu ken ik God nog niet echt. Maar dan zal ik God werkelijk kennen, net zoals Hij mij werkelijk kent.
13 We hebben dus deze drie dingen: geloof, hoop en liefde. Maar de belangrijkste van deze drie is de liefde.

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

The Way of Love
13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have (A)prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, (B)so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 (C)If I give away all I have, and (D)if I deliver up my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, I gain nothing.
4 (E)Love is patient and (F)kind; love (G)does not envy or boast; it (H)is not arrogant 5 or rude. It (I)does not insist on its own way; it (J)is not irritable or resentful;[b] 6 it (K)does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but (L)rejoices with the truth. 7 (M)Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, (N)endures all things.
8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For (O)we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but (P)when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For (Q)now we see in a mirror dimly, but (R)then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as (S)I have been fully known.
13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
