The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

12 Christian brothers, I want you to know about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. You need to understand the truth about this. 2 You know that before you were Christians you were led to worship false gods. None of these gods could speak. 3 So I tell you that no one speaking by the help of the Holy Spirit can say that he hates Jesus. No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the help of the Holy Spirit.

The Kinds of Gifts

4 There are different kinds of gifts. But it is the same Holy Spirit Who gives them. 5 There are different kinds of work to be done for Him. But the work is for the same Lord. 6 There are different ways of doing His work. But it is the same God who uses all these ways in all people. 7 The Holy Spirit works in each person in one way or another for the good of all. 8 One person is given the gift of teaching words of wisdom. Another person is given the gift of teaching what he has learned and knows. These gifts are by the same Holy Spirit. 9 One person receives the gift of faith. Another person receives the gifts of healing. These gifts are given by the same Holy Spirit. 10 One person is given the gift of doing powerful works. Another person is given the gift of speaking God’s Word. Another person is given the gift of telling the difference between the Holy Spirit and false spirits. Another person is given the gift of speaking in special sounds. Another person is given the gift of telling what these special sounds mean. 11 But it is the same Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, Who does all these things. He gives to each person as He wants to give.

Our Body Is Like the Body of Christ

12 Our own body has many parts. When all these many parts are put together, they are only one body. The body of Christ is like this. 13 It is the same way with us. Jews or those who are not Jews, men who are owned by someone or men who are free to do what they want to do, have all been baptized into the one body by the same Holy Spirit. We have all received the one Spirit.

14 The body is not one part, but many parts. 15 If the foot should say, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that would not stop it from being a part of the body. 16 If the ear should say, “I am not a part of the body because I am not an eye,” that would not stop it from being a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye how would it hear? If the whole body were an ear, how would it smell? 18 But God has put all the parts into the body just as He wants to have them. 19 If all the parts were the same, it could not be a body. 20 But now there are many parts, but one body.

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you.” Or the head cannot say to the feet, “I do not need you.” 22 Some of the parts we think are weak and not important are very important. 23 We take good care of and cover with clothes the parts of the body that look less important. The parts which do not look beautiful have an important work to do. 24 The parts that can be seen do not need as much care. God has made the body so more care is given to the parts that need it most. 25 This is so the body will not be divided into parts. All the parts care for each other. 26 If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts suffer with it. If one part is given special care, the other parts are happy.

The Body of Christ

27 You are all a part of the body of Christ. 28 God has chosen different ones in the church to do His work. First, there are missionaries. Second, there are preachers or those who speak for God. And third, there are teachers. He has also chosen those who do powerful works and those who have the gifts of healing. And He has chosen those who help others who are in need and those who are able to lead others in work and those who speak in special sounds. 29 Are they all missionaries? No. Are they all preachers or those who speak for God? No. Do they all do powerful works? No. 30 Do they all have the gifts of healing? No. Do they all speak in special sounds? No. Are they all able to tell what the special sounds mean? No. 31 But from your heart you should want the best gifts. Now I will show you even a better way.

Gaven en taken die de Heilige Geest aan de gelovigen geeft

12 Ik wil dat jullie ook meer weten over de geestelijke gaven, broeders en zusters. 2 Vroeger aanbaden jullie afgoden. Want dat hadden jullie zo geleerd. Jullie wisten niet beter. Dat waren goden die niet eens kunnen spreken. 3 Daarom wil ik dat jullie weten, dat niemand door Gods Geest Jezus kan vervloeken. Ook kan iemand alleen door de Heilige Geest zeggen dat Jezus de Heer is.

4 God geeft in zijn liefdevolle goedheid verschillende soorten gaven aan ons. Maar ze komen allemaal van dezelfde Geest. 5 En er zijn verschillende soorten taken. Maar ze komen van dezelfde Heer. 6 En er zijn verschillende manieren waarop de Geest kan werken. Maar ze komen van dezelfde God, die al die dingen in de mensen doet. 7 Maar iedereen krijgt deze dingen van de Heilige Geest om er de ándere mensen mee te dienen.

8 Aan de één geeft Hij de gave om met wijsheid te spreken. Aan iemand anders geeft diezelfde Geest de gave om dingen te weten. 9 Aan weer iemand anders geeft diezelfde Geest de gave van bijzonder geloof. En aan wéér een ander geeft diezelfde Geest gaven om mensen te genezen. 10 De één krijgt de gave om wonderen te doen. Een ander de gave om te profeteren. De één krijgt de gave om de geesten te herkennen. Iemand anders de gave om verschillende talen van de Geest te spreken. Weer een ander krijgt de gave om die talen van de Geest uit te leggen. 11 Maar al deze gaven komen van één en dezelfde Geest. En Hij geeft aan iedereen wat Hij wil en op de manier die Hij wil.

Het Lichaam van Christus

12 Want een lichaam is één geheel, maar bestaat wel uit verschillende lichaamsdelen. Al die lichaamsdelen vormen samen één lichaam. Zo is het ook met Christus. 13 Want we zijn allemaal in één Geest ondergedompeld, zodat we samen één Lichaam werden. Het maakt niet uit of we Joden zijn of van een ander volk zijn. Het maakt ook niet uit of we slaven zijn of vrije mensen. We zijn allemaal vol van dezelfde Geest.

14 Een lichaam bestaat toch ook niet uit één lichaamsdeel, maar uit een groot aantal lichaamsdelen? 15 Als één van de voeten zou zeggen: "Omdat ik geen hand ben, hoor ik niet bij het lichaam," heeft hij dan gelijk? 16 En als een oor zou zeggen: "Omdat ik geen oog ben, hoor ik niet bij het lichaam," heeft het dan gelijk? 17 Want hoe kan een lichaam horen als het alleen uit ogen zou bestaan? En hoe kan het ruiken als het alleen uit oren zou bestaan? 18 Maar God heeft aan iedereen zijn eigen, speciale plaats in het Lichaam gegeven, daar waar Hij het wil. 19 Als we met z'n allen één lichaamsdeel zouden zijn, dan zou er toch geen Lichaam zijn? 20 Maar nu zijn er wel veel lichaamsdélen, maar is er maar één Lichaam.

21 Een oog kan niet tegen een hand zeggen: "Ik heb jou niet nodig." En het hoofd kan niet tegen de voeten zeggen: "Ik heb jullie niet nodig." 22 Nee, juist de delen van het lichaam die het meest kwetsbaar lijken, zijn het meest nodig. 23 En de delen van het lichaam die we niet graag laten zien, kleden we juist mooi aan. De lichaamsdelen die niet geschikt zijn om getoond te worden, houden we bedekt. 24 Maar de lichaamsdelen die we gewoon kunnen laten zien, hebben dat niet nodig. En God heeft het Lichaam zó gemaakt, dat Hij aan de delen die onbelangrijk lijken een belangrijke taak heeft gegeven. 25 Zo komt er geen verdeeldheid in het Lichaam en zorgen alle leden even goed voor elkaar. 26 Als één lid verdriet heeft, leven alle anderen met hem mee. Als één lid wordt geprezen, genieten alle anderen daarvan mee. 27 Jullie zijn dus samen het Lichaam van Christus. En ieder van jullie is een lichaamsdeel van dat Lichaam.

Taken in de gemeente

28 Zo geeft God ook aan een aantal mensen een speciale taak in de gemeente. In de eerste plaats geeft Hij boodschappers[a] die het goede nieuws moeten vertellen aan de mensen. In de tweede plaats profeten. In de derde plaats leraren. Verder mensen die wonderen doen, daarna mensen die gaven hebben om anderen te genezen, of de gave hebben om de leiders te helpen, of om leiding te geven, of om verschillende talen van de Geest te spreken. 29 Toch niet iedereen is boodschapper van God? Of profeet? Of leraar? Of wonderdoener? 30 Toch niet iedereen heeft de bijzondere gave om mensen te genezen? Of om in verschillende talen van de Geest te spreken? Of om de talen van de Geest uit te leggen?

31 Probeer de belangrijkste gaven te ontvangen. En ik zal jullie nu iets laten zien wat nog veel belangrijker is.

Concerning Spiritual Gifts

12 Now about the gifts of the Spirit,(A) brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.(B) 2 You know that when you were pagans,(C) somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.(D) 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,”(E) and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,”(F) except by the Holy Spirit.(G)

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit(H) distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone(I) it is the same God(J) at work.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.(K) 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom,(L) to another a message of knowledge(M) by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith(N) by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing(O) by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers,(P) to another prophecy,(Q) to another distinguishing between spirits,(R) to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a](S) and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit,(T) and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Unity and Diversity in the Body

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body,(U) so it is with Christ.(V) 13 For we were all baptized(W) by[c] one Spirit(X) so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free(Y)—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.(Z) 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.(AA)

15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed(AB) the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.(AC) 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.(AD)

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

27 Now you are the body of Christ,(AE) and each one of you is a part of it.(AF) 28 And God has placed in the church(AG) first of all apostles,(AH) second prophets,(AI) third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing,(AJ) of helping, of guidance,(AK) and of different kinds of tongues.(AL) 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[d]?(AM) Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire(AN) the greater gifts.

Love Is Indispensable

And yet I will show you the most excellent way.
