The first exodus
10 I don’t want you to be ignorant, my brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all went through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink. They drank, you see, from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Messiah. 5 But God wasn’t pleased with most of them, as you can tell by the fact that he laid them low in the desert.
Don’t make the same mistake again!
6 Now these things were patterns for us, so that we should not start to crave for wicked things as they did. 7 Nor should we commit idolatry, as some of them did—as the Bible says, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to play.” 8 Nor should we become immoral, like some of them became immoral, and twenty-three thousand fell on a single day. 9 Nor should we put the Messiah to the test, as some of them put him to the test, and were destroyed by serpents. 10 Nor should we grumble, as some of them grumbled and were destroyed by the destroyer.
11 Now these things happened to them as a pattern, and they were written for our instruction, since it’s upon us that the ends of the ages have now come. 12 As a result, anyone who reckons they are standing upright should watch out in case they fall over. 13 Every test that comes upon you is normal for human beings. But God is faithful: he won’t let you be tested beyond your ability. Along with the testing, he will provide the way of escape, so that you can bear it.
The table of the Lord and the table of demons
14 Therefore, my dear people, run away from idolatry. 15 I’m speaking as to intelligent people: you yourselves must weigh my words. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless is a sharing in the Messiah’s blood, isn’t it? The bread we break is a sharing in the Messiah’s body, isn’t it? 17 There is one loaf; well, then, there may be several of us, but we are one body, because we all share the one loaf.
18 Consider ethnic Israel. Those who eat from the sacrifices share in the altar, don’t they? 19 So what am I saying? That idol-food is real, or that an idol is a real being? 20 No: but when they offer sacrifices, they offer them to demons, not to God. And I don’t want you to be table-partners with demons. 21 You can’t drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t share in the table of the Lord and the table of demons. 22 Surely you don’t want to provoke the Lord to jealousy? We aren’t stronger than him, are we?
Do everything to God’s glory
23 “Everything is lawful,” but not everything is helpful. “Everything is lawful,” but not everything builds you up. 24 Nobody should seek their own advantage, but the other person’s instead.
25 Eat whatever is sold in the market without making any judgments on the basis of conscience. 26 “The earth and its fullness,” after all, “belong to the Lord.” 27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner, and you want to go, eat whatever is put in front of you without making any judgments on the basis of conscience. 28 But if someone says “This was offered in sacrifice,” then don’t eat it—because of the person who told you about it, and because of conscience, 29 by which I don’t mean your own conscience, but your neighbor’s. For why should my freedom be condemned by someone else’s conscience? 30 If I eat my share gratefully, why should someone else speak evil of me because of something I’ve given thanks for?
31 So, then, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do everything to God’s glory. 32 Be blameless before Jews and Greeks and the church of God, 33 just as I try to please everybody in everything, not pursuing my own advantage, but that of the great majority, so that they may be saved.

2 and all were baptized in Moses, in the cloud and in the sea;
3 and all ate the same spiritual meat,
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink; and they drank of the spiritual stone following them [forsooth they drank of the spiritual stone following them]; and the stone was Christ.
5 But not in full many of them it was well pleasant to God; for why they were cast down in [the] desert.
6 But these things were done in figure of us, that we be not coveters of evil things, as [and] they coveted.
7 Neither be ye made idolaters, as some of them; as it is written, The people sat to eat and drink, and they rose up to play [and they have risen up to play].
8 Neither do we fornication, as some of them did fornication, and three and twenty thousand were dead in one day [and three and twenty thousand fell, or died, in one day].
9 Neither tempt we Christ, as some of them tempted, and perished of serpents.
10 Neither grumble ye, as some of them grumbled, and they perished of a destroyer. [Neither grutch ye, as some of them grutched, and they perished of the waster, or destroyer.]
11 And all these things fell to them in figure; but they be written to our amending, into whom the ends of the worlds be come [soothly they be written to our correction, or amending, into whom the ends of the world have come].
12 Therefore he that guesseth him(self), that he standeth, see he, that he fall not. [And so he that guesseth him to stand, see, that he fall not.]
13 Temptation take not you, but man's temptation; for God is true, which shall not suffer you to be tempted above that that ye be able; but he shall make with temptation also purveyance, that ye be able to suffer [that ye may sustain].
14 Wherefore, ye most dear-worthy to me, flee ye from the worshipping of maumets [flee from worshipping of idols].
15 As to prudent men I speak, deem ye yourselves that thing that I say.
16 Whether the cup of blessing which we bless, is not the communing of Christ's blood? and whether the bread which we break, is not the part taking of the body of the Lord? [The cup of blessing which we bless, whether it is not the communing of Christ's blood? and the bread which we break, whether it is not the dealing, or part taking, of the body of the Lord?]
17 For we many be one bread and one body, all we that take part of one bread and of one cup.
18 See ye Israel after the flesh, whether they that eat sacrifices, be not partners of the altar?
19 What therefore say I, that a thing that is offered to idols is any thing, or that the idol is any thing?
20 But those things that heathen men offer, they offer to devils, and not to God. But I will not, that ye be made fellows of fiends;
21 for ye be not able to drink the cup of the Lord [for ye may not drink the cup of the Lord], and the cup of fiends; ye be not able to be partners of the board of the Lord [ye may not be partners of the board of the Lord], and of the board of fiends.
22 Whether we have envy to the Lord? whether we be stronger than he?
23 All things be leaveful to me, but not all things be speedful. All things be leaveful to me, but not all things edify.
24 No man seek that thing that is his own, but that thing that is of another.
25 All thing that is sold in the butchery, eat ye, asking nothing for conscience.
26 The earth and the plenty of it, is the Lord's.
27 If any of heathen men call you to supper [Forsooth if any of unfaithful, or heathen men, calleth you to supper], and ye will go, all thing that is set to you, eat ye, asking nothing for conscience.
28 But if any man saith [If any man soothly say to you], This thing is offered to idols, do not ye eat, for him that showed [this thing], and for conscience;
29 and I say not, thy conscience, but of another [man's]. But whereto is my freedom deemed of another man's conscience [Soothly whereto is my liberty, or freedom, deemed of another man's conscience]?
30 Therefore if I take part with grace, what am I blasphemed, for that that I do thankings [for that that I do graces, or thankings]?
31 Therefore whether ye eat, or drink, or do any other thing, do ye all things to the glory of God.
32 Be ye without offence to Jews, and to heathen men, and to the church of God;
33 as [and] I by all things please to all men, not seeking that that is profitable to me [not seeking what is profitable to me], but that that is profitable to many men, that they be made safe.

Exemple d’Israël dans le désert
10 Frères, je ne veux pas que vous ignoriez que nos pères ont tous été sous la nuée, qu’ils ont tous passé au travers de la mer, 2 qu’ils ont tous été baptisés en Moïse dans la nuée et dans la mer, 3 qu’ils ont tous mangé le même aliment spirituel, 4 et qu’ils ont tous bu le même breuvage spirituel, car ils buvaient à un rocher spirituel qui les suivait, et ce rocher était Christ. 5 Mais la plupart d’entre eux ne furent point agréables à Dieu, puisqu’ils périrent dans le désert.
6 Or, ces choses sont arrivées pour nous servir d’exemples, afin que nous n’ayons pas de mauvais désirs, comme ils en ont eu. 7 Ne devenez point idolâtres, comme quelques-uns d’entre eux, selon qu’il est écrit: Le peuple s’assit pour manger et pour boire; puis ils se levèrent pour se divertir[a]. 8 Ne nous livrons point à la débauche, comme quelques-uns d’entre eux s’y livrèrent, de sorte qu’il en tomba vingt-trois mille en un seul jour. 9 Ne tentons point le Seigneur, comme le tentèrent quelques-uns d’entre eux, qui périrent par les serpents. 10 Ne murmurez point, comme murmurèrent quelques-uns d’entre eux, qui périrent par l’exterminateur. 11 Ces choses leur sont arrivées pour servir d’exemples, et elles ont été écrites pour notre instruction, à nous qui sommes parvenus à la fin des siècles. 12 Ainsi donc, que celui qui croit être debout prenne garde de tomber!
13 Aucune tentation ne vous est survenue qui n’ait été humaine, et Dieu, qui est fidèle, ne permettra pas que vous soyez tentés au-delà de vos forces; mais avec la tentation il préparera aussi le moyen d’en sortir, afin que vous puissiez la supporter.

14 C’est pourquoi, mes bien-aimés, fuyez l’idolâtrie.
15 Je parle comme à des hommes intelligents; jugez vous-mêmes de ce que je dis. 16 La coupe de bénédiction que nous bénissons, n’est-elle pas la communion au sang de Christ? Le pain que nous rompons, n’est-il pas la communion au corps de Christ? 17 Puisqu’il y a un seul pain, nous qui sommes plusieurs, nous formons un seul corps; car nous participons tous à un même pain. 18 Voyez les Israélites selon la chair: ceux qui mangent les victimes ne sont-ils pas en communion avec l’autel? 19 Que dis-je donc? Que la viande sacrifiée aux idoles est quelque chose, ou qu’une idole est quelque chose? Nullement. 20 Je dis que ce qu’on sacrifie, on le sacrifie à des démons, et non à Dieu; or, je ne veux pas que vous soyez en communion avec les démons. 21 Vous ne pouvez boire la coupe du Seigneur, et la coupe des démons; vous ne pouvez participer à la table du Seigneur, et à la table des démons. 22 Voulons-nous provoquer la jalousie du Seigneur? Sommes-nous plus forts que lui?
23 Tout est permis, mais tout n’est pas utile; tout est permis, mais tout n’édifie pas. 24 Que personne ne cherche son propre intérêt, mais que chacun cherche celui d’autrui. 25 Mangez de tout ce qui se vend au marché, sans vous enquérir de rien par motif de conscience; 26 car la terre et tout ce qu’elle renferme est au Seigneur[b]. 27 Si un non-croyant vous invite et que vous vouliez aller, mangez de tout ce qu’on vous présentera, sans vous enquérir de rien par motif de conscience. 28 Mais si quelqu’un vous dit: Ceci a été offert en sacrifice! n’en mangez pas, à cause de celui qui a donné l’avertissement, et à cause de la conscience. 29 Je parle ici, non de votre conscience, mais de celle de l’autre. Pourquoi, en effet, ma liberté serait-elle jugée par une conscience étrangère? 30 Si je mange avec actions de grâces, pourquoi serais-je blâmé au sujet d’une chose dont je rends grâces?
31 Soit donc que vous mangiez, soit que vous buviez, soit que vous fassiez quelque autre chose, faites tout pour la gloire de Dieu. 32 Ne soyez en scandale ni aux Grecs, ni aux Juifs, ni à l’Eglise de Dieu, 33 de la même manière que moi aussi je m’efforce en toutes choses de complaire à tous, cherchant, non mon avantage, mais celui du plus grand nombre, afin qu’ils soient sauvés.

6 Now these things occurred as examples(H) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters,(I) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](J) 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(K) 9 We should not test Christ,[b](L) as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.(M) 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did(N)—and were killed(O) by the destroying angel.(P)
11 These things happened to them as examples(Q) and were written down as warnings for us,(R) on whom the culmination of the ages has come.(S) 12 So, if you think you are standing firm,(T) be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful;(U) he will not let you be tempted[d] beyond what you can bear.(V) But when you are tempted,[e] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Idol Feasts and the Lord’s Supper
14 Therefore, my dear friends,(W) flee from idolatry.(X) 15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break(Y) a participation in the body of Christ?(Z) 17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body,(AA) for we all share the one loaf.
18 Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices(AB) participate in the altar? 19 Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?(AC) 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons,(AD) not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.(AE) 22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy?(AF) Are we stronger than he?(AG)
The Believer’s Freedom
23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.(AH) “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.(AI)
25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,(AJ) 26 for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”[f](AK)
27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you(AL) without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.(AM) 29 I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom(AN) being judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?(AO)
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.(AP) 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble,(AQ) whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God(AR)— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way.(AS) For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many,(AT) so that they may be saved.(AU)
