Inleiding

Deze brief is van Paulus en van onze broeder Sostenes. Ik, Paulus, heb van God de taak gekregen om het goede nieuws van Jezus Christus[a] aan de mensen te vertellen. We schrijven deze brief aan de gemeente van God in Korinte. Dankzij Jezus Christus horen jullie bij God. Want God heeft jullie geroepen om bij Hem te horen, samen met alle andere mensen die in andere plaatsen de Heer Jezus Christus aanbidden. Hij is hún Heer en ónze Heer. Ik bid dat onze God en Vader in alles goed voor jullie zal zijn. En dat jullie vol zullen zijn van de vrede van God de Vader en van de Heer Jezus Christus.

God heeft dankzij Jezus Christus zo ontzettend goed voor jullie kunnen zijn. Daar dank ik mijn God aldoor voor. Hij heeft jullie zóveel gegeven! Dat is ook duidelijk te merken aan de manier waarop jullie spreken. We merken dat jullie Hem heel goed hebben leren kennen. Wat we jullie over Christus hebben verteld, heeft een vaste plaats in jullie leven gevonden. Daardoor kon God in zijn liefdevolle goedheid jullie zijn gaven geven.[b] Elk van die gaven is ruim in jullie aanwezig. En jullie kijken vol verwachting uit naar de komst van Jezus Christus. God zal ervoor zorgen dat jullie je geloof tot op die dag zullen vasthouden. Dan zal God op die dag niets op jullie aan te merken hebben. God zal jullie nooit in de steek laten. Hij heeft jullie geroepen om één te zijn met zijn Zoon, onze Heer Jezus Christus.

Maak geen ruzie met elkaar

10 Ik moedig jullie aan, broeders en zusters, om één te zijn met elkaar. Dat zeg ik jullie namens onze Heer Jezus Christus. Zorg ervoor dat jullie geen ruzie met elkaar maken. Wees één en streef naar hetzelfde doel. 11 Ik zeg dit, omdat ik van de huisgenoten van Kloë heb gehoord dat jullie ruzie maken met elkaar. 12 Ik bedoel dat bij jullie de één zegt: "Ík hoor bij Paulus!" En een ander: "Ík bij Apollos!" En weer een ander: "Ík bij Petrus!" En nog weer anderen: "Ík bij Christus!" 13 Maar is Christus dan in stukken verdeeld? Of is Paulus voor jullie gekruisigd? Of zijn jullie in de naam van Paulus gedoopt? 14 Ik dank God dat ik bij jullie alleen Krispus en Gajus gedoopt heb. 15 Zo kan niemand van jullie zeggen dat hij is gedoopt in míjn naam. 16 O ja, ook het gezin van Stefanas heb ik gedoopt. Maar verder niemand, geloof ik.

De gekruisigde Christus is de kracht van God

17 Want Christus heeft mij niet gestuurd om te dopen, maar om het goede nieuws te vertellen. En dat doe ik, niet met veel mooie woorden, maar zo gewoon mogelijk. Want het gaat niet om mooie woorden, maar om de gekruisigde Christus. Dat is het belangrijkste. 18 De mensen die verloren gaan, vinden het een belachelijk verhaal dat Jezus ons gered heeft door aan het kruis voor ons te sterven. Maar voor ons die gered zijn, is het de kracht van God.

19 Want in de Boeken staat: "Ik zal laten zien dat de wijsheid van wijze en geleerde mensen niets voorstelt. Hun hele manier van denken is maar dwaas." 20 Waar blijven nu de wijzen, de geleerden en de filosofen van deze tijd? Wat zij als ongelovige mensen wijs vinden, vindt God maar dwaas. 21 Want met al hun wijsheid hebben ze Hem niet leren kennen. Daarom besloot God mensen te redden door het 'belachelijke' verhaal van het kruis. Want de mensen die het geloven, worden daardoor gered.

22 Joden willen wonderen zien. Grieken willen wijsheid horen. 23 Maar wij vertellen over een gekruisigde Christus. De Joden willen het niet geloven. De Grieken vinden het belachelijk. 24 Maar voor de mensen die door God zijn geroepen, is Christus de kracht van God en de wijsheid van God. Het maakt niet uit of ze Jood zijn of Griek. 25 Wat de mensen een belachelijk idee vinden van God, is wijzer dan de wijsheid van mensen. En wat de mensen zwak vinden van God, heeft meer kracht dan mensen.

26 Kijk maar eens, broeders en zusters, wat jullie zelf voor mensen waren toen God jullie riep. Niet veel van jullie waren heel wijs of belangrijk op de menselijke manier. 27 Nee, jullie waren maar heel gewone mensen. Want wat de ongelovige mensen belachelijk vinden, gebruikt God juist om te laten zien dat je niets hebt aan de wijsheid van mensen. En wat de ongelovige mensen zwak vinden, gebruikt God juist om te laten zien dat je niets hebt aan wat de mensen sterk vinden. 28 En de dingen die de ongelovige mensen onbelangrijk en waardeloos vinden, gebruikt God juist om te laten zien dat je niets hebt aan de dingen die de mensen zo belangrijk vinden.

29 Zo kan dus niemand bij God over zichzelf opscheppen. 30 Want alles wat we nu zijn, hebben we alleen aan Hem te danken. Want alleen door Jezus Christus hebben we nu Gods wijsheid. En alleen dankzij Hem zijn we vrijgesproken van schuld en zijn we gered. Alleen door Hem horen we nu bij God. 31 Daardoor is het waar wat er in de Boeken staat: "Als iemand zo graag trots wil zijn, laat hij dan trots zijn op de Heer en niet op zichzelf." (lees verder)

Prefácio, saudação e ação de graças

Sempre dou graças ao meu Deus por vós pela graça de Deus que vos foi dada em Jesus Cristo. Porque em tudo fostes enriquecidos nele, em toda a palavra e em todo o conhecimento (como foi mesmo o testemunho de Cristo confirmado entre vós). De maneira que nenhum dom vos falta, esperando a manifestação de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, o qual vos confirmará também até ao fim, para serdes irrepreensíveis no Dia de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo. Fiel é Deus, pelo qual fostes chamados para a comunhão de seu Filho Jesus Cristo, nosso Senhor.

As dissensões na igreja de Corinto

10 Rogo-vos, porém, irmãos, pelo nome de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, que digais todos uma mesma coisa e que não haja entre vós dissensões; antes, sejais unidos, em um mesmo sentido e em um mesmo parecer. 11 Porque a respeito de vós, irmãos meus, me foi comunicado pelos da família de Cloe que há contendas entre vós. 12 Quero dizer, com isso, que cada um de vós diz: Eu sou de Paulo, e eu, de Apolo, e eu, de Cefas, e eu, de Cristo. 13 Está Cristo dividido? Foi Paulo crucificado por vós? Ou fostes vós batizados em nome de Paulo? 14 Dou graças a Deus, porque a nenhum de vós batizei, senão a Crispo e a Gaio; 15 para que ninguém diga que fostes batizados em meu nome. 16 E batizei também a família de Estéfanas; além destes, não sei se batizei algum outro. 17 Porque Cristo enviou-me não para batizar, mas para evangelizar; não em sabedoria de palavras, para que a cruz de Cristo se não faça vã.

18 Porque a palavra da cruz é loucura para os que perecem; mas para nós, que somos salvos, é o poder de Deus. 19 Porque está escrito: Destruirei a sabedoria dos sábios e aniquilarei a inteligência dos inteligentes. 20 Onde está o sábio? Onde está o escriba? Onde está o inquiridor deste século? 26 Porque vede, irmãos, a vossa vocação, que não são muitos os sábios segundo a carne, nem muitos os poderosos, nem muitos os nobres que são chamados. 27 Mas Deus escolheu as coisas loucas deste mundo para confundir as sábias; e Deus escolheu as coisas fracas deste mundo para confundir as fortes. 28 E Deus escolheu as coisas vis deste mundo, e as desprezíveis, e as que não são para aniquilar as que são; 29 para que nenhuma carne se glorie perante ele.

30 Mas vós sois dele, em Jesus Cristo, o qual para nós foi feito por Deus sabedoria, e justiça, e santificação, e redenção; 31 para que, como está escrito: Aquele que se gloria, glorie-se no Senhor.

Spiritual Gifts at Corinth

(I)I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in everything by Him (J)in all [b]utterance and all knowledge, even as (K)the testimony of Christ was confirmed [c]in you, so that you come short in no gift, eagerly (L)waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, (M)who will also confirm you to the end, (N)that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. (O)God is faithful, by whom you were called into (P)the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sectarianism Is Sin

10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (Q)that you all [d]speak the same thing, and that there be no [e]divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are [f]contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that (R)each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of (S)Apollos,” or “I am of (T)Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 (U)Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I baptized (V)none of you except (W)Crispus and (X)Gaius, 15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. 16 Yes, I also baptized the household of (Y)Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, (Z)not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

Christ the Power and Wisdom of God(AA)

18 For the [g]message of the cross is (AB)foolishness to (AC)those who are perishing, but to us (AD)who are being saved it is the (AE)power of God. 19 For it is written:

(AF)“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

20 (AG)Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the [h]disputer of this age? (AH)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the (AI)wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For (AJ)Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, (AK)to the Jews a [i]stumbling block and to the [j]Greeks (AL)foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ (AM)the power of God and (AN)the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Glory Only in the Lord

26 For [k]you see your calling, brethren, (AO)that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many [l]noble, are called. 27 But (AP)God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the [m]base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and (AQ)righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31 that, as it is written, (AR)“He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”

Thanksgiving

I always thank my God for you(I) because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched(J) in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge(K) God thus confirming our testimony(L) about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift(M) as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.(N) He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless(O) on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.(P) God is faithful,(Q) who has called you(R) into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.(S)

A Church Divided Over Leaders

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a](T) in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you,(U) but that you be perfectly united(V) in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household(W) have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”;(X) another, “I follow Apollos”;(Y) another, “I follow Cephas[b]”;(Z) still another, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?(AA) 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus(AB) and Gaius,(AC) 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household(AD) of Stephanas;(AE) beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize,(AF) but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom(AG) and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness(AH) to those who are perishing,(AI) but to us who are being saved(AJ) it is the power of God.(AK) 19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
    the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”[c](AL)

20 Where is the wise person?(AM) Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age?(AN) Has not God made foolish(AO) the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world(AP) through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save(AQ) those who believe.(AR) 22 Jews demand signs(AS) and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified:(AT) a stumbling block(AU) to Jews and foolishness(AV) to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called,(AW) both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God(AX) and the wisdom of God.(AY) 25 For the foolishness(AZ) of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness(BA) of God is stronger than human strength.

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.(BB) Not many of you were wise(BC) by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose(BD) the foolish(BE) things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not(BF)—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.(BG) 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,(BH) who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness,(BI) holiness(BJ) and redemption.(BK) 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[d](BL)
