²⁵ Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown^(A) that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.^(B)

⁵ Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown^(A) except by competing according to the rules.

¹² Fight the good fight^(A) of the faith. Take hold of^(B) the eternal life^(C) to which you were called when you made your good confession^(D) in the presence of many witnesses.

⁷ I have fought the good fight,^(A) I have finished the race,^(B) I have kept the faith. ⁸ Now there is in store for me^(C) the crown of righteousness,^(D) which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day^(E)—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.^(F)

¹² Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial^(A) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life^(B) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.^(C)

⁶ and to knowledge, self-control;^(A) and to self-control, perseverance;^(B) and to perseverance, godliness;^(C)

⁴ And when the Chief Shepherd^(A) appears, you will receive the crown of glory^(B) that will never fade away.^(C)
