⁵ For even if there are ^(A)so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords),

⁴ who opposes and ^(A)exalts himself ^(B)above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits ^[a]as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

Fears for the Church

⁸ But then, indeed, ^(A)when you did not know God, ^(B)you served those which by nature are not gods.

¹³ For according to the number of your ^(A)cities were your gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem you have set up altars to that shameful thing, altars to burn incense to Baal.

¹⁷ For the Lord your God is ^(A)God of gods and ^(B)Lord of lords, the great God, ^(C)mighty and awesome, who ^(D)shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.

³⁴ Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ^(A)‘I said, “You are gods” ’? ³⁵ If He called them gods, ^(B)to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture ^(C)cannot be broken),

⁴ They drank wine, ^(A)and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone.
