⁵ For even if there are so-called gods,^(A) whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”),

⁴ He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God^(A) or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.^(B)

Paul’s Concern for the Galatians

⁸ Formerly, when you did not know God,^(A) you were slaves^(B) to those who by nature are not gods.^(C)

¹³ You, Judah, have as many gods^(A) as you have towns;^(B) and the altars you have set up to burn incense^(C) to that shameful^(D) god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’

¹⁷ For the Lord your God is God of gods^(A) and Lord of lords,^(B) the great God, mighty and awesome,^(C) who shows no partiality^(D) and accepts no bribes.^(E)

³⁴ Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law,^(A) ‘I have said you are “gods”’^[a]?^{(B) 35} If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God^(C) came—and Scripture cannot be set aside^(D)—

⁴ As they drank the wine, they praised the gods^(A) of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.^(B)
