^5 (A)Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that ^(B)Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

¹⁵ And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; ^(A)do not come near your wives.”

^12 (A)And the land shall mourn, every family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of ^(B)Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; ¹³ the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves; ¹⁴ all the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves.

⁴ And the priest answered David and said, “There is no ^[a]common bread on hand; but there is ^(A)holy^[b] bread, ^(B)if the young men have at least kept themselves from women.”

⁵ Then David answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us about three days since I came out. And ^[c]the ^(C)vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in effect common, even though it was consecrated ^(D)in the vessel this day.”

Jesus Teaches on Celibacy

¹¹ But He said to them, ^(A)“All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given:

⁵ For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, ^(A)lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and ^(B)our labor might be in vain.

¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, ^[a]“Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ^(A)‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

³ and to ^(A)ask the priests who were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in ^(B)the fifth month and ^[a]fast as I have done for so many years?”
