¹² What we have received is not the spirit^(A) of the world,^(B) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.

²⁷ As for you, the anointing^(A) you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things^(B) and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.^(C)

⁵ Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;^(A) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.^{(B) 6} The mind governed by the flesh is death,^(C) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life^(D) and peace.

²⁰ But you have an anointing^(A) from the Holy One,^(B) and all of you know the truth.^[a](C)

¹⁹ We know that we are children of God,^(A) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.^{(B) 20} We know also that the Son of God has come^(C) and has given us understanding,^(D) so that we may know him who is true.^(E) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.^(F)

⁴ You, dear children,^(A) are from God and have overcome them,^(B) because the one who is in you^(C) is greater than the one who is in the world.^{(D) 5} They are from the world^(E) and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.

¹⁴ He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. ¹⁵ All that belongs to the Father is mine.^(A) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

¹⁵ The Spirit^(A) you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;^(B) rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.^[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,^[b] Father.”^{(C) 16} The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit^(D) that we are God’s children.^(E)

⁴ The god^(A) of this age^(B) has blinded^(C) the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ,^(D) who is the image of God.^(E)
