²⁶ For consider your calling, brothers: ^(A)not many of you were wise according to worldly standards,^[a] not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.

⁵ Listen, my beloved brothers, ^(A)has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be ^(B)rich in faith and heirs of ^(C)the kingdom, ^(D)which he has promised to those who love him?

^18 (A)Let no one deceive himself. ^(B)If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. ¹⁹ For ^(C)the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, ^(D)“He catches the wise in their craftiness,” ²⁰ and again, ^(E)“The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”

⁸ None of ^(A)the rulers of this age understood this, for ^(B)if they had, they would not have crucified ^(C)the Lord of glory.

²⁴ Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, ^(A)“How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter ^(B)the kingdom of God! ²⁵ For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter ^(C)the kingdom of God.”

⁹ Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, ¹⁰ and ^(A)the rich in his humiliation, because ^(B)like a flower of the grass^[a] he will pass away. ¹¹ For the sun rises with its scorching heat and ^(C)withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

^25 (A)At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, ^(B)Lord of heaven and earth, that ^(C)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and ^(D)revealed them to little children; ²⁶ yes, Father, for such was your ^(E)gracious will.^[a]

^20 (A)Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? ^(B)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

Jesus Rejoices in the Father's Will

^21 (A)In that same hour ^(B)he rejoiced ^(C)in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, ^(D)Lord of heaven and earth, that ^(E)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and ^(F)revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for ^(G)such was your gracious will.^[a]
