Les premiers partisans de David
12 Voici ensuite les hommes qui rejoignirent David à Tsiqlag[a], quand il était encore obligé de se tenir loin de Saül, fils de Qish. C’étaient des guerriers qui lui prêtèrent main-forte dans les combats. 2 Ils étaient armés d’arcs et savaient se servir indifféremment de la main droite ou de la main gauche pour lancer des pierres, ou tirer des flèches de leur arc. Ils appartenaient à la même tribu que Saül : celle de Benjamin. 3 Leur chef était Ahiézer. C’étaient Joas, fils de Shemaa, de Guibéa, Yeziel et Péleth, fils d’Azmaveth, Beraka, Jéhu, d’Anatoth, 4 Yishmaya, de Gabaon, un guerrier faisant partie du groupe des trente et un chef de ce groupe, 5 Jérémie, Yahaziel, Yohanân, Yozabad, de Guedéra, 6 Elouzaï, Yerimoth, Bealia, Shemaria, Shephatia, de Haroph, 7 Elqana, Yishiya, Azaréel, Yoézer et Yashobeam, des Qoréites, 8 Yoéla et Zebadia, fils de Yeroham, de Guedor.
9 Des membres de la tribu de Gad quittèrent Saül pour rejoindre David dans son fortin du désert[b]. C’étaient de valeureux guerriers, des soldats exercés au combat, sachant manier le bouclier et la lance. Ils étaient aussi braves que des lions et aussi rapides que des gazelles sur la montagne. 10 Ezer était leur chef, puis il y avait Abdias, le deuxième, Eliab, le troisième 11 Mishmanna, le quatrième, Jérémie, le cinquième, 12 Attaï, le sixième, Eliel, le septième, 13 Yohanân, le huitième, Elzabad, le neuvième, 14 Jérémie, le dixième, et Makbannaï, le onzième. 15 Ces membres de la tribu de Gad étaient tous des chefs militaires. Le moindre d’entre eux était capable de se battre contre cent hommes et le meilleur contre mille.
16 Ce sont eux qui traversèrent le Jourdain le premier mois[c] de l’année, à l’époque où il déborde sur toutes ses rives, et qui mirent en fuite tous les habitants des vallées latérales, à l’est comme à l’ouest.
17 Des hommes des tribus de Benjamin et de Juda rejoignirent aussi David dans son refuge fortifié. 18 David sortit au-devant d’eux. Il prit la parole et leur dit : Si vous venez me trouver dans des intentions pacifiques, pour m’aider, nous serons alliés, vous et moi. Mais si c’est pour me trahir et me livrer à mes ennemis, alors que je n’ai commis aucun acte de violence, que le Dieu de nos ancêtres en soit témoin et qu’il juge.
19 Alors l’Esprit de Dieu s’empara d’Amasaï, le chef du groupe des trente, qui s’écria :
Nous sommes avec toi, ╵David, fils d’Isaï, ╵oui, nous sommes de ton côté.
Que la paix te soit assurée, ╵une parfaite paix,
ainsi qu’à ceux qui te soutiennent ╵car ton Dieu te soutient !
David les accueillit et en fit des chefs de ses troupes.
20 Des hommes de la tribu de Manassé se rallièrent à David, lorsqu’il vint avec les Philistins au combat contre Saül. En fait, David et ses hommes ne se joignirent pas aux Philistins, car les princes philistins les renvoyèrent après s’être consultés. Ils se disaient en effet : David risque de passer du côté de son ancien souverain Saül, et de nous livrer en son pouvoir[d].
21 C’est quand il partit pour revenir à Tsiqlag que des gens de Manassé se rallièrent à lui : Adnah, Yozabad, Yediaël, Michaël, Yozabad, Elihou et Tsiltaï. Chacun d’eux était chef de « milliers » dans la tribu de Manassé. 22 Ce fut un sérieux renfort pour David et ses troupes, car c’étaient tous de valeureux guerriers et ils devinrent des chefs dans l’armée. 23 Journellement, des hommes venaient se joindre à David pour le soutenir, si bien que son armée devint bientôt immense ; c’était comme l’armée de Dieu[e].
L’armée de David s’agrandit
24 Voici le nombre des soldats et de leurs chefs, équipés pour faire campagne, qui rejoignirent David à Hébron pour lui transférer la royauté de Saül, comme l’Eternel l’avait déclaré :
25 De la tribu de Juda, 6 800 hommes vinrent le rejoindre, ils étaient tous armés de boucliers et de lances et équipés pour la guerre.
26 De la tribu de Siméon, 7 100 valeureux guerriers prêts à combattre. 27 De la tribu de Lévi, 4 600 hommes 28 ainsi que Yehoyada, le chef des descendants d’Aaron[f], qui était accompagné de 3 700 hommes. 29 Tsadoq était un jeune homme de valeur dont le groupe familial comptait vingt-deux chefs.
30 Des membres de la tribu de Benjamin, la tribu de Saül, il y en avait trois mille, dont la plupart étaient jusqu’alors attachés au service de la maison de Saül.
31 De la tribu d’Ephraïm étaient venus 20 800 valeureux guerriers, tous des hommes renommés dans leurs groupes familiaux.
32 De la tribu de Manassé, 18 000 hommes furent nommément désignés pour aller proclamer David roi.
33 De la tribu d’Issacar, 200 chefs vinrent avec les hommes de leur tribu qui étaient sous leurs ordres. C’étaient des gens qui savaient discerner comment Israël devait agir en fonction des circonstances. 34 De la tribu de Zabulon, 50 000 hommes, bien entraînés et parfaitement équipés de toutes les armes de guerre. Ils étaient prêts à combattre d’un cœur résolu.
35 De la tribu de Nephtali arrivèrent mille officiers accompagnés de 37 000 hommes armés de boucliers et de lances.
36 De la tribu de Dan, 28 600 hommes prêts au combat.
37 D’Aser, 40 000 hommes entraînés à la guerre et prêts à combattre.
38 Des tribus installées à l’est du Jourdain, c’est-à-dire de Ruben, de Gad et de l’autre demi-tribu de Manassé, vinrent 120 000 hommes équipés de toutes les armes de combat.
39 Tous ces hommes de guerre vinrent à Hébron en ordre de bataille, d’un cœur sans partage, pour proclamer David roi de tout Israël. Tous les autres Israélites étaient également unanimes pour conférer la royauté à David. 40 Ils passèrent là trois jours avec David, mangeant et buvant ce que leurs compatriotes leur avaient préparé.
41 Les gens de tous les environs, jusqu’à ceux des tribus d’Issacar, de Zabulon et de Nephtali, apportaient des vivres sur des ânes, des chameaux, des mulets et des bœufs : de la farine, des paquets de figues sèches et de raisins secs, du vin, de l’huile, des bœufs et des moutons en quantités, car la joie régnait en Israël.

Warriors Join David
12 These were the men who came to David at Ziklag when David was ·hiding [banished; kept away] from Saul son of Kish. They were among the ·warriors [champions] who helped David in battle. 2 They ·came [were armed/equipped] with bows for weapons and could use either their right or left hands to shoot arrows or to sling rocks. They were Saul’s relatives from the tribe of Benjamin. 3 Ahiezer was their ·leader [chief], and there was Joash. (Ahiezer and Joash were sons of Shemaah, who was from the town of Gibeah.) There were also Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth. There were Beracah and Jehu from the town of Anathoth. 4 And there was Ishmaiah from the town of Gibeon; he was one of the Thirty. In fact, he was the leader of the Thirty. There were Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, and Jozabad from Gederah. 5 There were Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, and Shemariah. There was Shephatiah from Haruph. 6 There were Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam from the ·family group of Korah [L Korahites]. 7 And there were Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham, from the town of Gedor.
8 Part of the people of Gad joined David at his stronghold in the ·desert [wilderness]. They were ·brave warriors [L mighty men of valor] trained for war and ·skilled [expert] with shields and spears. They ·were as fierce as [L had faces of] lions and as ·fast [swift; or nimble] as gazelles over the hills.
9 Ezer was the leader of Gad’s army, and Obadiah was second in command. Eliab was third, 10 Mishmannah was fourth, Jeremiah was fifth, 11 Attai was sixth, Eliel was seventh, 12 Johanan was eighth, Elzabad was ninth, 13 Jeremiah was tenth, and Macbannai was eleventh in command.
14 They were the ·commanders [leaders; captains] of the army from Gad. The least of these leaders ·was in charge of [or was a match for; could take on; L was equal to] a hundred soldiers, and the greatest ·was in charge of [or was a match for; could take on; L was equal to] a thousand. 15 They crossed the Jordan River and ·chased away [drove out; put to flight] the people living in the ·valleys [lowlands], to the east and to the west. This happened in the first month of the year when the Jordan ·floods the valley [was overflowing its banks].
16 ·Other people from the tribes [L Some of the sons] of Benjamin and Judah also came to David at his stronghold. 17 David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come peacefully to help me, ·I welcome you. Join me. […I am your friend; or we will make an alliance; L my heart will be united with you]. But if you have come to ·turn me over to my enemies [betray me to my adversaries], even though I have ·done nothing wrong [L no violence in my hands], the God of our ·ancestors [L fathers] will see this and ·punish you [L judge/decide].”
18 Then the Spirit ·entered [came upon; L clothed] Amasai, the ·leader [chief] of the Thirty, and he said:
“We ·belong to you [are yours], David.
We are with you, son of Jesse.
·Success, success [Peace and prosperity] to you.
·Success [Peace] to those who help you,
because your God helps you.”
So David ·welcomed [received] these men and made them ·leaders [captains] of his ·army [fighters; raiders].
19 Some of the men from Manasseh also ·joined [defected/deserted to] David when he went with the Philistines to fight Saul. But David and his men did not really help the Philistines. After ·talking about it [consultation], the Philistine leaders decided to send David away. They said, “If David ·goes [defects; deserts] back to his master Saul, ·we will be killed [L it will be our heads].” 20 These are the men from Manasseh who ·joined [defected/deserted to] David when he went to Ziklag: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai. Each of them was a ·leader [captain; chief] of a thousand men from Manasseh. 21 All these men of Manasseh were ·brave soldiers [L mighty men of valor], and they helped David fight against ·groups of men who went around the country robbing people [raiding bands]. These soldiers became ·commanders [captains] in David’s army. 22 Every day more men ·joined [came to help] David, and his army became ·large [great], like the army of God.
Others Join David at Hebron
23 These are the numbers of the soldiers ·ready [armed] for battle who ·joined [came to] David at Hebron. They came to help turn the kingdom of Saul over to David, ·just as the Lord had said [L according to the word of the Lord].
24 There were sixty-eight hundred armed ·men from [L descendants/sons of] Judah, carrying shields and spears.
25 There were seventy-one hundred men from Simeon. They were ·warriors [L mighty men of valor] ready for war.
26 There were forty-six hundred ·men from [L descendants/sons of] Levi. 27 Jehoiada, a leader from Aaron’s family, was in that group. There were thirty-seven hundred with him. 28 Zadok was also in that group. He was a ·strong [brave] young warrior, and with him came twenty-two leaders from his ·family [L father’s house].
29 There were three thousand men from Benjamin, who were Saul’s ·relatives [kinsmen; L brothers]. Most of them had ·remained loyal [kept their allegiance] to Saul’s ·family [L house] until then.
30 There were twenty thousand eight hundred ·men from [L sons of] Ephraim. They were brave warriors and were famous men in their ·own family groups [clans].
31 There were eighteen thousand men from ·West [L the half-tribe of] Manasseh. Each one was ·especially chosen [L designated by name] to make David king.
32 There were two hundred leaders from Issachar. They knew what Israel should do, and they ·knew the right time to do it [or understood the times]. Their ·relatives [kinsmen; L brothers] were with them and under their command.
33 There were fifty thousand men from Zebulun. They were ·trained [skilled] soldiers and ·knew how to use [equipped with] every kind of weapon of war. They followed David ·completely [with undivided loyalty/heart].
34 There were one thousand ·officers [commanders; captains] from Naphtali. They had thirty-seven thousand soldiers with them who carried shields and spears.
35 There were twenty-eight thousand six hundred men from Dan, who were ready for ·war [battle].
36 There were forty thousand trained soldiers from Asher, who were ready for ·war [battle].
37 There were one hundred twenty thousand soldiers from the east side of the Jordan River from the people of Reuben, Gad, and ·East [L the half-tribe of] Manasseh. They had every kind of weapon.
38 All these fighting men were ready to go to war. They came to Hebron ·fully agreed [determined; L with a complete/perfect heart] to make David king of all Israel. All the other Israelites also ·agreed [L were of one mind] to make David king. 39 They spent three days there with David, eating and drinking, because their ·relatives [kinsmen; L brothers] had prepared food for them. 40 Also, their neighbors came from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen. They brought much flour, fig cakes, raisins, wine, oil, ·cows [oxen; cattle], and sheep, because ·the people of Israel were very happy [there was great joy in Israel].

They were among the mighty men, his helpers in war. 2 They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in slinging stones and in shooting arrows from the bow. They were of Saul’s relatives of the tribe of Benjamin. 3 The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; Beracah; Jehu the Anathothite; 4 Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty and a leader of the thirty; Jeremiah; Jahaziel; Johanan; Jozabad the Gederathite; 5 Eluzai; Jerimoth; Bealiah; Shemariah; Shephatiah the Haruphite; 6 Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korahites; 7 and Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.
8 Some Gadites joined David in the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor, men trained for war, who could handle shield and spear; whose faces were like the faces of lions, and they were as swift as the gazelles on the mountains: 9 Ezer the chief, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third, 10 Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth, 11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh, 12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth, 13 Jeremiah the tenth, and Machbannai the eleventh. 14 These of the sons of Gad were captains of the army. He who was least was equal to one hundred, and the greatest to one thousand. 15 These are those who went over the Jordan in the first month, when it had overflowed all its banks; and they put to flight all who lived in the valleys, both toward the east and toward the west.
16 Some of the children of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David. 17 David went out to meet them, and answered them, “If you have come peaceably to me to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if you have come to betray me to my adversaries, since there is no wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers see this and rebuke it.” 18 Then the Spirit came on Amasai, who was chief of the thirty, and he said, “We are yours, David, and on your side, you son of Jesse. Peace, peace be to you, and peace be to your helpers; for your God helps you.” Then David received them and made them captains of the band.
19 Some of Manasseh also joined David when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle, but they didn’t help them, for the lords of the Philistines sent him away after consultation, saying, “He will desert to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.”
20 As he went to Ziklag, some from Manasseh joined him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, captains of thousands who were of Manasseh. 21 They helped David against the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor and were captains in the army. 22 For from day to day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army, like God’s army.
23 These are the numbers of the heads of those who were armed for war, who came to David to Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to Yahweh’s word. 24 The children of Judah who bore shield and spear were six thousand eight hundred, armed for war. 25 Of the children of Simeon, mighty men of valor for the war: seven thousand one hundred. 26 Of the children of Levi: four thousand six hundred. 27 Jehoiada was the leader of the household of Aaron; and with him were three thousand seven hundred, 28 and Zadok, a young man mighty of valor, and of his father’s house twenty-two captains. 29 Of the children of Benjamin, Saul’s relatives: three thousand, for until then, the greatest part of them had kept their allegiance to Saul’s house. 30 Of the children of Ephraim: twenty thousand eight hundred, mighty men of valor, famous men in their fathers’ houses. 31 Of the half-tribe of Manasseh: eighteen thousand, who were mentioned by name, to come and make David king. 32 Of the children of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their heads were two hundred; and all their brothers were at their command. 33 Of Zebulun, such as were able to go out in the army, who could set the battle in array with all kinds of instruments of war: fifty thousand who could command and were not of double heart. 34 Of Naphtali: one thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty-seven thousand. 35 Of the Danites who could set the battle in array: twenty-eight thousand six hundred. 36 Of Asher, such as were able to go out in the army, who could set the battle in array: forty thousand. 37 On the other side of the Jordan, of the Reubenites, the Gadites, and of the half-tribe of Manasseh, with all kinds of instruments of war for the battle: one hundred twenty thousand.
38 All these were men of war who could order the battle array, and came with a perfect heart to Hebron to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king. 39 They were there with David three days, eating and drinking; for their brothers had supplied provisions for them. 40 Moreover those who were near to them, as far as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, brought bread on donkeys, on camels, on mules, and on oxen: supplies of flour, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, wine, oil, cattle, and sheep in abundance; for there was joy in Israel.

Warriors Join David
12 These were the men who came to David at Ziklag,(A) while he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish (they were among the warriors who helped him in battle; 2 they were armed with bows and were able to shoot arrows or to sling stones right-handed or left-handed;(B) they were relatives of Saul(C) from the tribe of Benjamin):
3 Ahiezer their chief and Joash the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet the sons of Azmaveth; Berakah, Jehu the Anathothite, 4 and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty warrior among the Thirty, who was a leader of the Thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite,[a](D) 5 Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah and Shephatiah the Haruphite; 6 Elkanah, Ishiah, Azarel, Joezer and Jashobeam the Korahites; 7 and Joelah and Zebadiah the sons of Jeroham from Gedor.(E)
8 Some Gadites(F) defected to David at his stronghold in the wilderness. They were brave warriors, ready for battle and able to handle the shield and spear. Their faces were the faces of lions,(G) and they were as swift as gazelles(H) in the mountains.
9 Ezer was the chief,
Obadiah the second in command, Eliab the third,
10 Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,
11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,
12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,
13 Jeremiah the tenth and Makbannai the eleventh.
14 These Gadites were army commanders; the least was a match for a hundred,(I) and the greatest for a thousand.(J) 15 It was they who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks,(K) and they put to flight everyone living in the valleys, to the east and to the west.
16 Other Benjamites(L) and some men from Judah also came to David in his stronghold. 17 David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, I am ready for you to join me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when my hands are free from violence, may the God of our ancestors see it and judge you.”
18 Then the Spirit(M) came on Amasai,(N) chief of the Thirty, and he said:
“We are yours, David!
We are with you, son of Jesse!
Success,(O) success to you,
and success to those who help you,
for your God will help you.”
So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.
19 Some of the tribe of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (He and his men did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their rulers sent him away. They said, “It will cost us our heads if he deserts to his master Saul.”)(P) 20 When David went to Ziklag,(Q) these were the men of Manasseh who defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai, leaders of units of a thousand in Manasseh. 21 They helped David against raiding bands, for all of them were brave warriors, and they were commanders in his army. 22 Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God.[b]
Others Join David at Hebron
23 These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron(R) to turn(S) Saul’s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said:(T)
24 from Judah, carrying shield and spear—6,800 armed for battle;
25 from Simeon, warriors ready for battle—7,100;
26 from Levi—4,600, 27 including Jehoiada, leader of the family of Aaron, with 3,700 men, 28 and Zadok,(U) a brave young warrior, with 22 officers from his family;
29 from Benjamin,(V) Saul’s tribe—3,000, most(W) of whom had remained loyal to Saul’s house until then;
30 from Ephraim, brave warriors, famous in their own clans—20,800;
31 from half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make David king—18,000;
32 from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do(X)—200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;
33 from Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty—50,000;
34 from Naphtali—1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears;
35 from Dan, ready for battle—28,600;
36 from Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle—40,000;
37 and from east of the Jordan, from Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon—120,000.
38 All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel.(Y) All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king. 39 The men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking,(Z) for their families had supplied provisions for them. 40 Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies(AA) of flour, fig cakes, raisin(AB) cakes, wine, olive oil, cattle and sheep, for there was joy(AC) in Israel.
