21 Und der Satan stand wider Israel und reizte David, daß er Israel zählen ließe.
2 Und David sprach zu Joab und zu des Volkes Obersten: Gehet hin, zählt Israel von Beer-Seba an bis gen Dan und bringt es zu mir, daß ich wisse, wieviel ihrer sind.
3 Joab sprach: Der HERR tue zu seinem Volk, wie sie jetzt sind, hundertmal soviel; aber, mein Herr König, sind sie nicht alle meines Herrn Knechte? Warum fragt denn mein Herr darnach? Warum soll eine Schuld auf Israel kommen?
4 Aber des Königs Wort stand fest wider Joab. Und Joab zog aus und wandelte durch das ganze Israel und kam gen Jerusalem
5 und gab die Zahl des gezählten Volks David. Und es waren des ganzen Israels elfhundertmal tausend Mann, die das Schwert auszogen, und Juda's vierhundertmal und siebzigtausend Mann, die das Schwert auszogen.
6 Levi aber und Benjamin zählte er nicht unter ihnen; denn es war dem Joab des Königs Wort ein Greuel.
7 Aber solches gefiel Gott übel, und er schlug Israel.
8 Und David sprach zu Gott: Ich habe schwer gesündigt, daß ich das getan habe. Nun aber nimm weg die Missetat deines Knechtes; denn ich habe sehr töricht getan.
9 Und der HERR redete mit Gad, dem Seher Davids, und sprach:
10 Gehe hin, rede mit David und sprich: So spricht der HERR: Dreierlei lege ich dir vor; erwähle dir eins, daß ich es dir tue.
11 Und da Gad zu David kam, sprach er zu ihm: So spricht der HERR: Erwähle dir
12 entweder drei Jahre Teuerung, oder drei Monate Flucht vor deinen Widersachern und vor dem Schwert deiner Feinde, daß dich's ergreife, oder drei Tage das Schwert des HERRN und Pestilenz im Lande, daß der Engel des HERRN verderbe in allen Grenzen Israels. So siehe nun zu, was ich antworten soll dem, der mich gesandt hat.
13 David sprach zu Gad: Mir ist sehr angst; doch ich will in die Hand des HERRN fallen, denn seine Barmherzigkeit ist sehr groß, und will nicht in Menschenhände fallen.
14 Da ließ der HERR Pestilenz in Israel kommen, daß siebzigtausend Mann fielen aus Israel.
15 Und Gott sandte den Engel gen Jerusalem, sie zu verderben. Und im Verderben sah der HERR darein und reute ihn das Übel, und er sprach zum Engel, dem Verderber: Es ist genug; laß deine Hand ab! Der Engel aber des HERRN stand bei der Tenne Ornans, des Jebusiters.
16 Und David hob seine Augen auf und sah den Engel des HERRN stehen zwischen Himmel und Erde und sein bloßes Schwert in seiner Hand ausgereckt über Jerusalem. Da fielen David und die Ältesten, mit Säcken bedeckt, auf ihr Antlitz.
17 Und David sprach zu Gott: Bin ich's nicht, der das Volk zählen hieß? ich bin, der gesündigt und das Übel getan hat; diese Schafe aber, was haben sie getan? HERR, mein Gott, laß deine Hand wider mich und meines Vaters Haus, und nicht wider dein Volk sein, es zu plagen!
18 Und der Engel des HERRN sprach zu Gad, daß er David sollte sagen, daß David hinaufgehen und dem HERRN einen Altar aufrichten sollte in der Tenne Ornans, des Jebusiters.
19 Also ging David hinauf nach dem Wort Gads, das er geredet hatte in des HERRN Namen.
20 Ornan aber, da er sich wandte und sah den Engel, und seine vier Söhne mit ihm, versteckten sie sich; denn Ornan drosch Weizen.
21 Als nun David zu Ornan ging, sah Ornan und ward Davids gewahr und ging heraus aus der Tenne und fiel vor David nieder mit seinem Antlitz zur Erde.
22 Und David sprach zu Ornan: Gib mir den Platz der Tenne, daß ich einen Altar dem HERRN darauf baue; um volles Geld sollst du ihn mir geben, auf daß die Plage unter dem Volk aufhöre.
23 Ornan aber sprach zu David: Nimm dir und mache, mein Herr König, wie dir's gefällt: siehe, ich gebe das Rind zum Brandopfer und das Geschirr zu Holz und Weizen zum Speisopfer; das alles gebe ich.
24 Aber der König David sprach zu Ornan: Nicht also, sondern um volles Geld will ich's kaufen; denn ich will nicht, was dein ist, nehmen für den HERRN und will's nicht umsonst haben zum Brandopfer.
25 Also gab David Ornan um den Platz Gold, am Gewicht sechshundert Lot.
26 Und David baute daselbst dem HERRN einen Altar und opferte Brandopfer und Dankopfer. Und da er den HERRN anrief, erhörte er ihn durch das Feuer vom Himmel auf den Altar des Brandopfers.
27 Und der HERR sprach zum Engel, daß er sein Schwert in sein Scheide kehrte.
28 Zur selben Zeit, da David sah, daß ihn der HERR erhört hatte auf der Tenne Ornans, des Jebusiters, pflegte er daselbst zu opfern.
29 Denn die Wohnung des HERRN, die Mose in der Wüste gemacht hatte, und der Brandopferaltar war zu der Zeit auf der Höhe zu Gibeon.
30 David aber konnte nicht hingehen vor denselben, Gott zu suchen, so war er erschrocken vor dem Schwert des Engels des HERRN.

21 Und Satan stand auf wider Israel und reizte David, Israel zählen zu lassen. 2 Und David sprach zu Joab und zu den Obersten des Volkes: Gehet hin, zählet Israel von Beerseba an bis gen Dan, und bringet mir Bericht, daß ich ihre Anzahl wisse!
3 Joab sprach: Der Herr tue zu seinem Volk, wie zahlreich es jetzt ist, noch hundertmal mehr hinzu! Aber sind sie nicht, mein Herr und König, alle meines Herrn Knechte? Warum soll eine Schuld auf Israel kommen? -
4 Aber des Königs Wort blieb fest wider Joab. Und Joab zog aus und durchwanderte ganz Israel und kam wieder nach Jerusalem. 5 Und Joab gab David die Zahl des gemusterten Volkes an. Das ganze Israel zählte elfhunderttausend Männer, die das Schwert zogen, und Juda vierhundertsiebzigtausend Männer, die das Schwert zogen. 6 Levi aber und Benjamin hatte er nicht mit ihnen gemustert; denn des Königs Wort war Joab ein Greuel.
7 Und solches mißfiel Gott; darum schlug er Israel. 8 Und David sprach zu Gott: Ich habe schwer gesündigt, daß ich diese Sache getan habe. Nun aber nimm doch die Missetat deines Knechtes hinweg, denn ich habe sehr töricht gehandelt!
9 Und der Herr redete zu Gad, dem Seher Davids, und sprach: 10 Gehe hin, sage zu David und sprich: So spricht der Herr: Dreierlei lege ich dir vor, erwähle dir eins davon, das ich dir tun soll!
11 Und als Gad zu David kam, sprach er zu ihm: So spricht der Herr: Wähle dir: 12 entweder drei Jahre Hungersnot oder drei Monate lang Flucht vor deinen Widersachern, so daß dich das Schwert deiner Feinde ereilt, oder drei Tage lang das Schwert des Herrn und die Pestilenz im Lande, und den Engel des Herrn, den Verderber, im ganzen Gebiete Israels. So siehe nun zu, was ich dem antworten soll, der mich gesandt hat!
13 David sprach zu Gad: Mir ist sehr angst! Ich will in die Hand des Herrn fallen; denn seine Barmherzigkeit ist sehr groß; aber in der Menschen Hände will ich nicht fallen!
14 Da ließ der Herr Pestilenz über Israel kommen, also daß siebzigtausend Mann aus Israel fielen. 15 Und Gott sandte den Engel gen Jerusalem, es zu verderben. Und als er verderbte, sah der Herr darein und ließ sich das Übel gereuen und sprach zum Engel, dem Verderber: Genug! Ziehe nun deine Hand ab! Der Engel des Herrn aber stand bei der Tenne Ornans[a], des Jebusiters.
16 Und David erhob seine Augen und sah den Engel des Herrn zwischen Erde und Himmel stehen, und in seiner Hand ein bloßes Schwert, über Jerusalem ausgestreckt. Da fielen David und die Ältesten, in Säcke gehüllt, auf ihr Angesicht.
17 Und David sprach zu Gott: Habe nicht ich gesagt, daß man das Volk zählen solle? Ich bin es, der gesündigt und das große Übel getan hat. Was haben aber diese Schafe getan? Herr, mein Gott, laß doch deine Hand wider mich und meines Vaters Haus sein, und nicht wider dein Volk zur Plage !
18 Und der Engel des Herrn befahl Gad, David zu sagen, daß er hinaufgehen solle, dem Herrn einen Altar aufzurichten in der Tenne Ornans, des Jebusiters. 19 Also ging David hinauf nach dem Worte Gads, das dieser im Namen des Herrn geredet hatte.
20 Und Ornan wandte sich um und sah den Engel, und seine vier Söhne versteckten sich mit ihm; Ornan drosch gerade Weizen. 21 Und David kam zu Ornan; und Ornan blickte um sich und ward Davids gewahr und ging aus der Tenne heraus und bückte sich vor David mit dem Angesicht zur Erde.
22 Und David sprach zu Ornan: Gib mir den Platz der Tenne, daß ich dem Herrn einen Altar darauf baue - um den vollen Geldwert sollst du mir ihn geben -, damit die Plage von dem Volk abgewandt werde!
23 Ornan aber sprach zu David: Nimm ihn hin, mein Herr und König tue damit, was ihm gefällt! Siehe, ich gebe die Rinder zu Brandopfern und die Dreschschlitten als Brennholz und den Weizen zum Speisopfer; alles schenke ich!
24 Aber der König David sprach zu Ornan: Nicht also, sondern ich will es um den vollen Geldwert kaufen! Denn ich will nicht für den Herrn nehmen, was dir gehört, und umsonst Brandopfer bringen!
25 Also gab David dem Ornan für den Platz sechshundert gewogene Goldschekel. 26 Und David baute dem Herrn daselbst einen Altar und opferte Brandopfer und Dankopfer. Und als er den Herrn anrief, antwortete er ihm mit Feuer vom Himmel, [das er] auf den Brandopferaltar [fallen ließ].
27 Und der Herr gebot dem Engel, sein Schwert wieder in die Scheide zu stecken.
28 Zu jener Zeit, als David sah, daß der Herr ihn in der Tenne Ornans, des Jebusiters, erhört hatte, pflegte er daselbst zu opfern. 29 Die Wohnung des Herrn aber, die Mose in der Wüste gemacht hatte, und der Brandopferaltar waren zu jener Zeit auf der Höhe zu Gibeon. 30 David aber konnte nicht vor denselben treten, um Gott zu suchen; so sehr war er erschrocken vor dem Schwerte des Engels des Herrn.

David Counts the Fighting Men(A)
21 Satan(B) rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census(C) of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count(D) the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.”
3 But Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over.(E) My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. 5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel(F) there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.
6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him. 7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.
8 Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
9 The Lord said to Gad,(G) David’s seer,(H) 10 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”
11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine,(I) three months of being swept away[a] before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword(J) of the Lord(K)—days of plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
13 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(L) is very great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”
14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.(M) 15 And God sent an angel(N) to destroy Jerusalem.(O) But as the angel was doing so, the Lord saw it and relented(P) concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying(Q) the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah[b] the Jebusite.
16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.(R)
17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,[c] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.(S) What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family,(T) but do not let this plague remain on your people.”
David Builds an Altar
18 Then the angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor(U) of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord.
20 While Araunah was threshing wheat,(V) he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.
22 David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”
23 Araunah said to David, “Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.”
24 But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25 So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels[d] of gold for the site. 26 David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire(W) from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.
27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.(X) 30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.

21 Now Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. 2 Then David said to Joab and the leaders of the people, “Go count Israel from Beersheba to Dan and bring me a report, that I may know their number.”
3 But Joab said, “May the Lord increase the number of His people one hundred times more. My lord the king, are not all of them my lord’s servants? Why then should my lord require this? Why should it bring guilt on Israel?”
4 Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab, so Joab departed and went throughout all Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem. 5 Joab gave the results of the census of the people to David: All Israel had one million one hundred thousand men who drew the sword, and in Judah four hundred and seventy thousand men drew the sword.
6 However, he did not include the Levites and Benjamin because the word of the king was abhorrent to Joab. 7 Now this thing was evil in the sight of God, and He struck Israel.
8 So David said to God, “I have sinned greatly in doing this thing. Now, please, take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”
9 And the Lord spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying, 10 “Go and speak to David, ‘Thus says the Lord: Three things I offer you; choose one of these for yourself that I may do to you.’ ”
11 So Gad came to David and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Select for yourself, 12 either three years of famine, or three months of being swept away before your foes while the sword of your enemy overtakes you, or three days of the sword of the Lord, even pestilence in the land, with the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.’ Now then consider what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.”
13 David replied to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercies are very great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”
14 So the Lord sent a plague throughout Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell. 15 And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he prepared to destroy it, the Lord looked and relented from the calamity. And He said to the angel bringing the destruction, “It is enough. Remove your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven with his sword drawn in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. So David and the elders, covered in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
17 David said to God, “Was it not I who gave the command to number the people? I am the one who has sinned and surely done evil. But these sheep, what have they done? O Lord my God, I pray, let Your hand be against me and my father’s house, but do not let Your people be plagued.”
David Builds an Altar
18 Then the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19 So David went up at the word of Gad which he delivered in the name of the Lord.
20 Now Ornan turned and saw the angel, but his four sons who were with him hid themselves as Ornan threshed the wheat. 21 As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David and went out from the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.
22 Then David said to Ornan, “Give me the site of the threshing floor so that I may build an altar on it to the Lord. Sell it to me at full price so the plague on the people may be restrained.”
23 So Ornan replied to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do whatever seems good in his eyes. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing wagons for wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give it all.”
24 Then King David said to Ornan, “No, for I will surely acquire it for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the Lord nor offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
25 So David gave Ornan six hundred shekels[a] of gold by weight for the site, 26 and David built there an altar to the Lord and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him by fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.
27 So the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put away his sword in its sheath. 28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he sacrificed there. 29 For the tabernacle of the Lord and the altar of burnt offering that Moses had made in the wilderness were in the high place in Gibeon at that time. 30 But David was unable to go before it to inquire of God, because he was terrified by the sword of the angel of the Lord.
