6 ^[a]^(A)The sons of Levi were ^[b]Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ²The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. ³The children of Amram were Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. And the sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ⁴Eleazar fathered Phinehas, Phinehas fathered Abishua, ⁵Abishua fathered Bukki, Bukki fathered Uzzi, ⁶Uzzi fathered Zerahiah, Zerahiah fathered Meraioth, ⁷Meraioth fathered Amariah, Amariah fathered Ahitub, ⁸^(B)Ahitub fathered Zadok, Zadok ^(C)fathered Ahimaaz, ⁹Ahimaaz fathered Azariah, Azariah fathered Johanan, ¹⁰Johanan fathered Azariah (^(D)it was he who served as the priest in the house ^(E)which Solomon built in Jerusalem), ¹¹^(F)Azariah fathered Amariah, Amariah fathered Ahitub, ¹²Ahitub fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered ^[c]Shallum, ¹³Shallum fathered Hilkiah, Hilkiah fathered Azariah, ¹⁴Azariah fathered ^(G)Seraiah, and Seraiah fathered Jehozadak; ¹⁵Jehozadak went along when the Lord led Judah and Jerusalem into exile ^[d]by Nebuchadnezzar.

¹⁶^[e]^(H)The sons of Levi were ^[f]Gershom, Kohath, and Merari. ¹⁷These are the names of the sons of Gershom: Libni and Shimei. ¹⁸The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. ¹⁹The sons of ^(I)Merari were Mahli and Mushi. And these are the families of the Levites according to their fathers’ households. ²⁰Of Gershom: Libni his son, Jahath his son, Zimmah his son, ²¹Joah his son, Iddo his son, Zerah his son, and Jeatherai his son. ²²The sons of Kohath were Amminadab his son, Korah his son, Assir his son, ²³Elkanah his son, Ebiasaph his son, Assir his son, ²⁴Tahath his son, Uriel his son, Uzziah his son, and Shaul his son. ²⁵The sons of Elkanah were Amasai and Ahimoth. ²⁶As for Elkanah, the sons of Elkanah were Zophai his son, Nahath his son, ²⁷Eliab his son, Jeroham his son, and Elkanah his son. ²⁸The sons of Samuel were ^(J)Joel, the firstborn, and Abijah, the second. ²⁹The sons of Merari were Mahli, Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son, ³⁰Shimea his son, Haggiah his son, and Asaiah his son.

³¹^(K)Now these are the ones whom David appointed over the ^[g]service of song in the house of the Lord, ^(L)after the ark rested there. ³²They were ministering in song in front of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting until Solomon’s building of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem; and they ^[h]served in their office according to their order. ³³These are the ones who ^[i]served with their sons: From the sons of the Kohathites were Heman the singer, the son of Joel, the son of Samuel, ³⁴the son of Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Eliel, the son of Toah, ³⁵the son of Zuph, the son of Elkanah, the son of Mahath, the son of Amasai, ³⁶the son of Elkanah, the son of Joel, the son of Azariah, the son of Zephaniah, ³⁷the son of Tahath, the son of Assir, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, ³⁸the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, the son of Israel. ³⁹Heman’s brother Asaph stood at his right hand, Asaph the son of Berechiah, the son of Shimea, ⁴⁰the son of Michael, the son of Baaseiah, the son of Malchijah, ⁴¹the son of Ethni, the son of Zerah, the son of Adaiah, ⁴²the son of Ethan, the son of Zimmah, the son of Shimei, ⁴³the son of Jahath, the son of Gershom, the son of Levi. ⁴⁴On the left hand were their kinsmen the sons of Merari: Ethan the son of Kishi, the son of Abdi, the son of Malluch, ⁴⁵the son of Hashabiah, the son of Amaziah, the son of Hilkiah, ⁴⁶the son of Amzi, the son of Bani, the son of Shemer, ⁴⁷the son of Mahli, the son of Mushi, the son of Merari, the son of Levi. ⁴⁸Their kinsmen the Levites were ^[j]appointed for all the service of the tabernacle of the house of God.

⁴⁹But Aaron and his sons ^[k]^(M)offered on the altar of burnt offering and ^(N)on the altar of incense, for all the work of the Most Holy Place, and ^(O)to make atonement for Israel, in accordance with everything that Moses the servant of God had commanded. ⁵⁰^(P)These are the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son, ⁵¹Bukki his son, Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son, ⁵²Meraioth his son, Amariah his son, Ahitub his son, ⁵³Zadok his son, and Ahimaaz his son.

⁵⁴Now these are their settlements according to their camps within their borders. To the sons of Aaron of the families of the Kohathites (for theirs was the ^(Q)first lot), ⁵⁵to them they gave ^(R)Hebron in the land of Judah and its pasture lands around it; ⁵⁶^(S)but they gave the fields of the city and its settlements to Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁵⁷^(T)To the sons of Aaron they gave the following cities of refuge: Hebron, Libnah together with its pasture lands, Jattir, Eshtemoa with its pasture lands, ⁵⁸^[l]Hilen with its pasture lands, Debir with its pasture lands, ⁵⁹^[m]Ashan with its pasture lands, and Beth-shemesh with its pasture lands; ⁶⁰and from the tribe of Benjamin: Geba with its pasture lands, ^[n]Allemeth with its pasture lands, and Anathoth with its pasture lands. Their cities throughout their families were thirteen cities in all.

⁶¹^(U)Then to the rest of the sons of Kohath were given by lot, from the family of the tribe, from the half-tribe, the half of Manasseh, ten cities. ⁶²To the sons of Gershom, according to their families, were given from the tribe of Issachar, the tribe of Asher, the tribe of Naphtali, and the tribe of Manasseh, thirteen cities in Bashan. ⁶³^(V)To the sons of Merari were given by lot, according to their families, from the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad, and the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities. ⁶⁴^(W)So the sons of Israel gave the Levites the cities with their pasture lands. ⁶⁵They gave by lot from the tribe of the sons of Judah, the tribe of the sons of Simeon, and the tribe of the sons of Benjamin, ^(X)these cities which are mentioned by name.

⁶⁶^(Y)Now some of the families of the sons of Kohath had cities of their territory from the tribe of Ephraim. ⁶⁷They gave to them the following cities of refuge: Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim with its pasture lands, Gezer with its pasture lands, ⁶⁸Jokmeam with its pasture lands, Beth-horon with its pasture lands, ⁶⁹Aijalon with its pasture lands, and Gath-rimmon with its pasture lands; ⁷⁰and from the half-tribe of Manasseh: Aner with its pasture lands and Bileam with its pasture lands, for the rest of the family of the sons of Kohath.

⁷¹To the sons of Gershom were given, from the family of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan with its pasture lands and Ashtaroth with its pasture lands; ⁷²and from the tribe of Issachar: Kedesh with its pasture lands, Daberath with its pasture lands, ⁷³Ramoth with its pasture lands, and Anem with its pasture lands; ⁷⁴and from the tribe of Asher: Mashal with its pasture lands, Abdon with its pasture lands, ⁷⁵Hukok with its pasture lands, and Rehob with its pasture lands; ⁷⁶and from the tribe of Naphtali: Kedesh in Galilee with its pasture lands, Hammon with its pasture lands, and Kiriathaim with its pasture lands.

⁷⁷To the rest of the Levites, the sons of Merari, were given, from the tribe of Zebulun: Rimmono with its pasture lands, Tabor with its pasture lands, ⁷⁸and beyond the Jordan at Jericho, on the east side of the Jordan, were given them, from the tribe of Reuben: Bezer in the wilderness with its pasture lands, Jahzah with its pasture lands, ⁷⁹Kedemoth with its pasture lands, and Mephaath with its pasture lands; ⁸⁰and from the tribe of Gad: Ramoth in Gilead with its pasture lands, Mahanaim with its pasture lands, ⁸¹Heshbon with its pasture lands, and Jazer with its pasture lands.

6 ⁽¹⁶⁾The sons of Levi: Gershom, K’hat and M’rari. ²⁽¹⁷⁾These are the names of the sons of Gershom: Livni and Shim‘i. ³⁽¹⁸⁾The sons of K’hat: ‘Amram, Yitz’har, Hevron and ‘Uzi’el. ⁴⁽¹⁹⁾The sons of M’rari: Machli and Mushi.

These are the families of the L’vi’im according to father’s clans: ⁵⁽²⁰⁾[The descendants] of Gershom: his son Livni, his son Yachat, his son Zimah, ⁶⁽²¹⁾his son Yo’ach, his son ‘Iddo, his son Zerach, his son Ye’atrai.

⁷⁽²²⁾The descendants of K’hat: his son ‘Amminadav, his son Korach, his son Asir, ⁸⁽²³⁾his son Elkanah, his son Evyasaf, his son Asir, ⁹⁽²⁴⁾his son Tachat, his son Uri’el, his son ‘Uziyah and his son Sha’ul. ¹⁰⁽²⁵⁾The sons of Elkanah: ‘Amasai and Achimot. ¹¹⁽²⁶⁾As for Elkanah, the sons of Elkanah: his son Tzofai, his son Nachat, ¹²⁽²⁷⁾his son Eli’av, his son Yerocham and his son Elkanah. ¹³⁽²⁸⁾The sons of Sh’mu’el: Vashni the firstborn, then Aviyah.

¹⁴⁽²⁹⁾The descendants of M’rari: Machli, his son Livni, his son Shim‘i, his son ‘Uzah, ¹⁵⁽³⁰⁾his son Shim‘a, his son Hagiyah and his son ‘Asayah. ¹⁶⁽³¹⁾David appointed them to be in charge of the service of song in the house of Adonai after the ark had found a permanent resting place. ¹⁷⁽³²⁾They served as singers before the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, until Shlomo had built the house of Adonai in Yerushalayim; and they carried out their tasks in a prescribed order.

¹⁸⁽³³⁾Those who carried out these tasks and their descendants were — starting with descendants of the K’hati — Heman the singer, the son of Yo’el the son of Sh’mu’el, ¹⁹⁽³⁴⁾the son of Elkanah, the son of Yerocham, the son of Eli’el, the son of Toach, ²⁰⁽³⁵⁾the son of Tzuf, the son of Elkanah, the son of Machat, the son of ‘Amasai, ²¹⁽³⁶⁾the son of Elkanah, the son of Yo’el, the son of ‘Azaryah, the son of Tz’fanyah, ²²⁽³⁷⁾the son of Tachat, the son of Asir, the son of Evyasaf, the son of Korach, ²³⁽³⁸⁾the son of Yitz’har, the son of K’hat, the son of Levi, the son of Isra’el.

²⁴⁽³⁹⁾His brother Asaf, who stood on his right, was Asaf the son of Berekhyah, the son of Shim‘a, ²⁵⁽⁴⁰⁾the son of Mikha’el, the son of Ba‘aseyah, the son of Malkiyah, ²⁶⁽⁴¹⁾the son of Etni, the son of Zerach the son of ‘Adayah, ²⁷⁽⁴²⁾the son of Eitan, the son of Zimah, the son of Shim‘i, ²⁸⁽⁴³⁾the son of Yachat, the son of Gershom, the son of Levi.

²⁹⁽⁴⁴⁾On the left were their kinsmen the descendants of M’rari: Eitan the son of Kishi, the son of ‘Avdi, the son of Malukh, ³⁰⁽⁴⁵⁾the son of Hashavyah, the son of Amatzyah, the son of Hilkiyah, ³¹⁽⁴⁶⁾the son of Amtzi, the son of Bani, the son of Shemer, ³²⁽⁴⁷⁾the son of Machli, the son of Mushi, the son of M’rari, the son of Levi.

³³⁽⁴⁸⁾Their kinsmen the L’vi’im were put in charge of all the service of the tabernacle of the house of God.

³⁴⁽⁴⁹⁾But Aharon and his sons were the ones who offered on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense for all the service of the Especially Holy Place and to make atonement for Isra’el, in keeping with all that Moshe the servant of God had ordered to be done. ³⁵⁽⁵⁰⁾These are the descendants of Aharon: his son El‘azar, his son Pinchas, his son Avishua, ³⁶⁽⁵¹⁾his son Buki, his son ‘Uzi, his son Z’rachyah, ³⁷⁽⁵²⁾his son M’rayot, his son Amaryah, his son Achituv, ³⁸⁽⁵³⁾his son Tzadok and his son Achima‘atz.

³⁹⁽⁵⁴⁾These were the settlements of the descendants of Aharon according to the territories assigned them: to the descendants of Aharon, of the clans of the K’hati — for the first lot fell to them — ⁴⁰⁽⁵⁵⁾they gave Hevron in the land of Y’hudah with the open land surrounding it, ⁴¹⁽⁵⁶⁾but the fields and the dependent villages of the city they gave to Kalev the son of Y’funeh. ⁴²⁽⁵⁷⁾To the descendants of Aharon they gave the city of refuge Hevron, also Livnah with its surrounding open land, Yatir, Esht’moa with its surrounding open land, ⁴³⁽⁵⁸⁾Hilen with its surrounding open land, D’vir with its surrounding open land, ⁴⁴⁽⁵⁹⁾‘Ashan with its surrounding open land, Beit-Shemesh with its surrounding open land; ⁴⁵⁽⁶⁰⁾and out of the tribe of Binyamin: Geva with its surrounding open land, ‘Alemet with its surrounding open land and ‘Anatot with its surrounding open land. All the cities for all their clans amounted to thirteen cities.

⁴⁶⁽⁶¹⁾The rest of the descendants of K’hat were assigned by lot, clan by clan, ten cities from the half-tribe of M’nasheh. ⁴⁷⁽⁶²⁾The descendants of Gershom were assigned, clan by clan, thirteen cities from the tribes of Yissakhar, Asher, Naftali and M’nasheh in Bashan. ⁴⁸⁽⁶³⁾To the descendants of M’rari were assigned by lot, clan by clan, twelve cities from the tribes of Re’uven, Gad and Z’vulun. ⁴⁹⁽⁶⁴⁾So the people of Isra’el gave the L’vi’im these cities with the surrounding open land. ⁵⁰⁽⁶⁵⁾From the tribes of the descendants of Y’hudah, Shim‘on and Binyamin they assigned these cities mentioned by name.

⁵¹⁽⁶⁶⁾Some of the clans of the descendants of K’hat were given cities in territory from the tribe of Efrayim. ⁵²⁽⁶⁷⁾They gave them the city of refuge Sh’khem in the hills of Efrayim with the surrounding open land, also Gezer with the surrounding open land, ⁵³⁽⁶⁸⁾Yokme‘am with the surrounding open land, Beit-Horon with the surrounding open land, ⁵⁴⁽⁶⁹⁾Ayalon with the surrounding open land, and Gat-Rimmon with the surrounding open land; ⁵⁵⁽⁷⁰⁾and out of the half-tribe of M’nasheh: ‘Aner with the surrounding open land and Bil‘am with the surrounding open land, for the rest of the clans of the descendants of K’hat.

They performed their duties according to the regulations laid down for them.

³³Here are the men who served, together with their sons:

From the Kohathites:

the son of Eliel, the son of Toah,

⁴⁸Their fellow Levites^(AI) were assigned to all the other duties of the tabernacle, the house of God. ⁴⁹But Aaron and his descendants were the ones who presented offerings on the altar^(AJ) of burnt offering and on the altar of incense^(AK) in connection with all that was done in the Most Holy Place, making atonement for Israel, in accordance with all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

⁵⁰These were the descendants of Aaron:

Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son,

Abishua his son, ⁵¹Bukki his son,

Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son,

⁵²Meraioth his son, Amariah his son,

Ahitub his son, ⁵³Zadok^(AL) his son

and Ahimaaz his son.

⁵⁴These were the locations of their settlements^(AM) allotted as their territory (they were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clan, because the first lot was for them):

⁵⁵They were given Hebron in Judah with its surrounding pasturelands. ⁵⁶But the fields and villages around the city were given to Caleb son of Jephunneh.^(AN)

⁵⁷So the descendants of Aaron were given Hebron (a city of refuge), and Libnah,^[h]^(AO) Jattir,^(AP) Eshtemoa, ⁵⁸Hilen, Debir,^(AQ) ⁵⁹Ashan,^(AR) Juttah^[i] and Beth Shemesh, together with their pasturelands. ⁶⁰And from the tribe of Benjamin they were given Gibeon,^[j] Geba, Alemeth and Anathoth,^(AS) together with their pasturelands.

The total number of towns distributed among the Kohathite clans came to thirteen.

⁶¹The rest of Kohath’s descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of half the tribe of Manasseh.

⁶²The descendants of Gershon, clan by clan, were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Issachar, Asher and Naphtali, and from the part of the tribe of Manasseh that is in Bashan.

⁶³The descendants of Merari, clan by clan, were allotted twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.

⁶⁴So the Israelites gave the Levites these towns^(AT) and their pasturelands. ⁶⁵From the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin they allotted the previously named towns.

⁶⁶Some of the Kohathite clans were given as their territory towns from the tribe of Ephraim.

⁶⁷In the hill country of Ephraim they were given Shechem (a city of refuge), and Gezer,^[k]^(AU) ⁶⁸Jokmeam,^(AV) Beth Horon,^(AW) ⁶⁹Aijalon^(AX) and Gath Rimmon,^(AY) together with their pasturelands.

⁷⁰And from half the tribe of Manasseh the Israelites gave Aner and Bileam, together with their pasturelands, to the rest of the Kohathite clans.

⁷¹The Gershonites^(AZ) received the following:

From the clan of the half-tribe of Manasseh

they received Golan in Bashan^(BA) and also Ashtaroth, together with their pasturelands;

⁷²from the tribe of Issachar

they received Kedesh, Daberath,^(BB) ⁷³Ramoth and Anem, together with their pasturelands;

⁷⁴from the tribe of Asher

they received Mashal, Abdon,^(BC) ⁷⁵Hukok^(BD) and Rehob,^(BE) together with their pasturelands;

⁷⁶and from the tribe of Naphtali

they received Kedesh in Galilee, Hammon^(BF) and Kiriathaim,^(BG) together with their pasturelands.

⁷⁷The Merarites (the rest of the Levites) received the following:

From the tribe of Zebulun

they received Jokneam, Kartah,^[l] Rimmono and Tabor, together with their pasturelands;

⁷⁸from the tribe of Reuben across the Jordan east of Jericho

they received Bezer^(BH) in the wilderness, Jahzah, ⁷⁹Kedemoth^(BI) and Mephaath, together with their pasturelands;

⁸⁰and from the tribe of Gad

they received Ramoth in Gilead,^(BJ) Mahanaim,^(BK) ⁸¹Heshbon and Jazer,^(BL) together with their pasturelands.^(BM)
