David’s Descendants
3 These(A) were David’s sons who were born to him in Hebron:
Amnon was the firstborn, by Ahinoam of Jezreel;
Daniel was born second, by Abigail of Carmel;
2 Absalom son of Maacah, daughter of King Talmai of Geshur, was third;
Adonijah son of Haggith was fourth;
3 Shephatiah, by Abital, was fifth;
and Ithream, by David’s wife Eglah, was sixth.
4 Six sons were born to David in Hebron, where he reigned seven years and six months, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-three years.(B)
5 These(C) sons were born to him in Jerusalem:
Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon.(D) These four were born to him by Bath-shua(E) daughter of Ammiel.
6 David’s other sons: Ibhar, Elishua,[a](F) Eliphelet, 7 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 8 Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet—nine sons.
9 These were all David’s sons, with their sister Tamar,(G) in addition to the sons by his concubines.
Judah’s Kings
10 Solomon’s son was Rehoboam;
his son was Abijah, his son Asa,
his son Jehoshaphat, 11 his son Jehoram,[b][c]
his son Ahaziah, his son Joash,
12 his son Amaziah, his son Azariah,
his son Jotham, 13 his son Ahaz,
his son Hezekiah, his son Manasseh,
14 his son Amon, and his son Josiah.
15 Josiah’s sons:
Johanan was the firstborn, Jehoiakim second,
Zedekiah third, and Shallum fourth.
16 Jehoiakim’s sons:
his sons Jeconiah and Zedekiah.
David’s Line after the Exile
17 The sons of Jeconiah the captive:
his sons Shealtiel, 18 Malchiram, Pedaiah, Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah.
19 Pedaiah’s sons: Zerubbabel and Shimei.
Zerubbabel’s sons: Meshullam and Hananiah, with their sister Shelomith; 20 and five others—Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah, and Jushab-hesed.
21 Hananiah’s descendants: Pelatiah, Jeshaiah, and the sons of Rephaiah, Arnan, Obadiah, and Shecaniah.[d]
22 The son[e] of Shecaniah: Shemaiah.
Shemaiah’s sons: Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat—six.
23 Neariah’s sons: Elioenai, Hizkiah, and Azrikam—three.
24 Elioenai’s sons: Hodaviah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Delaiah, and Anani—seven.
Judah’s Descendants
4 Judah’s sons:(H) Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal.
2 Reaiah son of Shobal fathered Jahath, and Jahath fathered Ahumai and Lahad.
These were the families of the Zorathites.
3 These were Etam’s sons:[f] Jezreel, Ishma, and Idbash, and their sister was named Hazzelelponi.
4 Penuel fathered Gedor, and Ezer fathered Hushah.
These were the sons of Hur, Ephrathah’s firstborn and the father of Bethlehem:
5 Ashhur fathered Tekoa and had two wives, Helah and Naarah.
6 Naarah bore Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and Haahashtari to him. These were Naarah’s sons.
7 Helah’s sons: Zereth, Zohar,[g] and Ethnan. 8 Koz fathered Anub, Zobebah,[h] and the families of Aharhel son of Harum.
9 Jabez[i] was more honored than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez and said, “I gave birth to him in pain.”
10 Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only you would bless me, extend my border, let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will not experience pain.”[j] And God granted his request.
11 Chelub brother of Shuhah fathered Mehir, who was the father of Eshton. 12 Eshton fathered Beth-rapha, Paseah, and Tehinnah the father of Irnahash. These were the men of Recah.
13 Kenaz’s sons: Othniel and Seraiah.
Othniel’s sons: Hathath and Meonothai.[k]
14 Meonothai fathered Ophrah,
and Seraiah fathered Joab, the ancestor of those in the Craftsmen’s Valley,[l] for they were craftsmen.
15 The sons of Caleb son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam.
Elah’s son: Kenaz.
16 Jehallelel’s sons: Ziph, Ziphah, Tiria, and Asarel.
17 Ezrah’s sons: Jether, Mered, Epher, and Jalon. Mered’s wife Bithiah gave birth to Miriam, Shammai, and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa. 18 These were the sons of Pharaoh’s daughter Bithiah; Mered had married her. His Judean wife gave birth to Jered the father of Gedor, Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. 19 The sons of Hodiah’s wife, the sister of Naham: the father of Keilah the Garmite and the father of Eshtemoa the Maacathite.
20 Shimon’s sons: Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-hanan, and Tilon.
Ishi’s sons: Zoheth and Ben-zoheth.
21 The sons of Shelah son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah, Laadah the father of Mareshah, the families of the guild[m] of linen workers at Beth-ashbea, 22 Jokim, the men of Cozeba; and Joash and Saraph, who married Moabites[n] and returned to Lehem.[o] These names are from ancient records. 23 They were the potters and residents of Netaim and Gederah. They lived there in the service of the king.
Simeon’s Descendants
24 Simeon’s sons:(I) Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, and Shaul;
25 Shaul’s sons: his son Shallum, his son Mibsam, and his son Mishma.
26 Mishma’s sons: his son Hammuel, his son Zaccur, and his son Shimei.
27 Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters, but his brothers did not have many children, so their whole family did not become as numerous as the Judeans. 28 They lived in Beer-sheba, Moladah, Hazar-shual, 29 Bilhah, Ezem, Tolad, 30 Bethuel, Hormah, Ziklag, 31 Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susim, Beth-biri, and Shaaraim. These were their cities until David became king. 32 Their villages were Etam, Ain, Rimmon, Tochen, and Ashan—five cities, 33 and all their surrounding villages as far as Baal. These were their settlements, and they kept a genealogical record for themselves.
34 Meshobab, Jamlech, Joshah son of Amaziah,
35 Joel, Jehu son of Joshibiah, son of Seraiah, son of Asiel,
36 Elioenai, Jaakobah, Jeshohaiah, Asaiah, Adiel, Jesimiel, Benaiah, 37 and Ziza son of Shiphi, son of Allon, son of Jedaiah, son of Shimri, son of Shemaiah—
38 these mentioned by name were leaders in their families. Their ancestral houses increased greatly. 39 They went to the entrance of Gedor, to the east side of the valley to seek pasture for their flocks. 40 They found rich, good pasture, and the land was broad, peaceful, and quiet,(J) for some Hamites had lived there previously.
41 These(K) who were recorded by name came in the days of King Hezekiah of Judah, attacked the Hamites’ tents and the Meunites who were found there, and set them apart for destruction,(L) as they are today. Then they settled in their place because there was pasture for their flocks. 42 Now five hundred men from these sons of Simeon went with Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the descendants of Ishi, as their leaders to Mount Seir.(M) 43 They struck down(N) the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped, and they still live there today.
Reuben’s Descendants
5 These were the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel. He was the firstborn,(O) but his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph(P) son of Israel, because Reuben defiled his father’s bed.(Q) He is not listed in the genealogy according to birthright. 2 Although Judah became strong among his brothers(R) and a ruler came from him,(S) the birthright was given to Joseph.
3 The sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn:(T)
Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
4 Joel’s sons: his son Shemaiah,
his son Gog, his son Shimei,
5 his son Micah, his son Reaiah,
his son Baal, 6 and his son Beerah.
Beerah was a leader of the Reubenites, and King Tiglath-pileser[p] of Assyria took him into exile. 7 His relatives by their families as they are recorded in their family records:(U)
Jeiel the chief, Zechariah,
8 and Bela son of Azaz,
son of Shema, son of Joel.
They settled in Aroer(V) as far as Nebo and Baal-meon. 9 They also settled in the east as far as the edge of the desert that extends to the Euphrates River, because their herds had increased in the land of Gilead.(W) 10 During Saul’s reign they waged war against the Hagrites,(X) who were defeated by their power. And they lived in their tents throughout the region east of Gilead.
Gad’s Descendants
11 The sons(Y) of Gad lived next to them in the land of Bashan as far as Salecah:(Z)
12 Joel the chief, Shapham the second in command, Janai, and Shaphat in Bashan.
13 Their relatives according to their ancestral houses: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber—seven.
14 These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri,
son of Jaroah, son of Gilead,
son of Michael, son of Jeshishai,
son of Jahdo, son of Buz.
15 Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was head of their ancestral family.[q] 16 They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its surrounding villages, and throughout the pasturelands of Sharon.(AA) 17 All of them were registered in the genealogies during the reigns of Judah’s King Jotham(AB) and Israel’s King Jeroboam.(AC)
18 The descendants of Reuben and Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 warriors who could serve(AD) in the army—men who carried shield and sword, drew the bow, and were trained for war. 19 They waged war against the Hagrites,(AE) Jetur,(AF) Naphish, and Nodab. 20 They received help against these enemies because they cried out to God in battle, and the Hagrites and all their allies were handed over to them.(AG) He was receptive to their prayer because they trusted in him.(AH) 21 They captured the Hagrites’ livestock—fifty thousand of their camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep, and two thousand donkeys—as well as one hundred thousand people. 22 Many of the Hagrites were killed because it was God’s battle.(AI) And they lived there in the Hagrites’ place(AJ) until the exile.(AK)
Half the Tribe of Manasseh
23 The descendants of half the tribe of Manasseh settled in the land from Bashan to Baal-hermon (that is, Senir(AL) or Mount Hermon); they were numerous. 24 These were the heads of their ancestral families: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel. They were valiant warriors, famous men, and heads of their ancestral houses. 25 But they were unfaithful to the God of their ancestors. They prostituted themselves(AM) with the gods of the nations[r] God had destroyed before them.(AN) 26 So the God of Israel roused the spirit of King Pul(AO) (that is, Tiglath-pileser[s]) of Assyria, and he took the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh into exile. He took them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and Gozan’s river, where they are until today.

God’s Ways Vindicated

1 God is indeed good to Israel,
to the pure in heart.(B)
2 But as for me, my feet almost slipped;
my steps nearly went astray.(C)
3 For I envied the arrogant;
I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(D)
4 They have an easy time until they die,[a]
and their bodies are well fed.[b](E)
5 They are not in trouble like others;
they are not afflicted like most people.(F)
6 Therefore, pride is their necklace,
and violence covers them like a garment.(G)
7 Their eyes bulge out from fatness;
the imaginations of their hearts run wild.(H)
8 They mock, and they speak maliciously;
they arrogantly threaten oppression.(I)
9 They set their mouths against heaven,
and their tongues strut across the earth.(J)

1 I cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and he will hear me.(B)
2 I sought the Lord in my day of trouble.
My hands were continually lifted up
all night long;
I refused to be comforted.(C)
3 I think of God; I groan;

4 You have kept me from closing my eyes;

Psalm 78
Lessons from Israel’s Past
A Maskil of Asaph.(X)
1 My people, hear my instruction;
listen to the words from my mouth.(Y)
2 I will declare wise sayings;
I will speak mysteries from the past(Z)—
3 things we have heard and known
and that our ancestors have passed down to us.(AA)
4 We will not hide them from their children,
but will tell a future generation
the praiseworthy acts of the Lord,
his might, and the wondrous works
he has performed.(AB)
5 He established a testimony in Jacob
and set up a law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach to their children(AC)
6 so that a future generation—
children yet to be born—might know.
They were to rise and tell their children(AD)
7 so that they might put their confidence in God
and not forget God’s works,
but keep his commands.(AE)
8 Then they would not be like their ancestors,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not loyal
and whose spirit was not faithful to God.(AF)
9 The Ephraimite archers turned back
on the day of battle.(AG)
10 They did not keep God’s covenant
and refused to live by his law.(AH)
11 They forgot what he had done,
the wondrous works he had shown them.(AI)
12 He worked wonders in the sight of their ancestors

13 He split the sea and brought them across;
the water stood firm like a wall.(AK)

But can he also provide bread

21 Therefore, the Lord heard and became furious;
then fire broke out against Jacob,
and anger flared up against Israel(AS)
22 because they did not believe God
or rely on his salvation.(AT)
23 He gave a command to the clouds above
and opened the doors of heaven.(AU)
24 He rained manna for them to eat;
he gave them grain from heaven.(AV)
25 People[c] ate the bread of angels.[d]
He sent them an abundant supply of food.(AW)
26 He made the east wind blow in the skies
and drove the south wind by his might.(AX)
27 He rained meat on them like dust,
and winged birds like the sand of the seas.

29 The people ate and were completely satisfied,

30 Before they had turned from what they craved,
while the food was still in their mouths,
31 God’s anger flared up against them,
and he killed some of their best men.

32 Despite all this, they kept sinning
and did not believe his wondrous works.(BB)
33 He made their days end in futility,
their years in sudden disaster.(BC)
34 When he killed some of them,
the rest began to seek him;
they repented and searched for God.(BD)
35 They remembered that God was their rock,
the Most High God, their Redeemer.(BE)
36 But they deceived him with their mouths,
they lied to him with their tongues,(BF)
37 their hearts were insincere toward him,
and they were unfaithful to his covenant.(BG)
38 Yet he was compassionate;
he atoned for their iniquity
and did not destroy them.
He often turned his anger aside
and did not unleash[e] all his wrath.(BH)
39 He remembered that they were only flesh,
a wind that passes and does not return.(BI)
40 How often they rebelled against him
in the wilderness
and grieved him in the desert.
41 They constantly tested God(BJ)
and provoked the Holy One of Israel.(BK)
42 They did not remember his power shown
on the day he redeemed them from the foe,(BL)
43 when he performed his miraculous signs in Egypt
and his wonders in the territory of Zoan.(BM)
44 He turned their rivers into blood,
and they could not drink from their streams.(BN)
45 He sent among them swarms of flies,(BO)
which fed on them,
and frogs, which devastated them.(BP)
46 He gave their crops to the caterpillar
and the fruit of their labor to the locust.(BQ)
47 He killed their vines with hail
and their sycamore fig trees with a flood.
48 He handed over their livestock to hail
and their cattle to lightning bolts.(BR)
49 He sent his burning anger against them:
fury, indignation, and calamity—
a band of deadly messengers.[f](BS)
50 He cleared a path for his anger.
He did not spare them from death
but delivered their lives to the plague.(BT)
51 He struck all the firstborn(BU) in Egypt,
the first progeny of the tents of Ham.(BV)
52 He led his people out like sheep

53 He led them safely, and they were not afraid;

He apportioned their inheritance by lot

56 But they rebelliously tested the Most High God,

57 They treacherously turned away like their ancestors;
they became warped like a faulty bow.(CC)
58 They enraged him with their high places
and provoked his jealousy with their carved images.(CD)
59 God heard and became furious;
he completely rejected Israel.(CE)
60 He abandoned the tabernacle at Shiloh,
the tent where he resided among mankind.(CF)
61 He gave up his strength to captivity
and his splendor to the hand of a foe.(CG)
62 He surrendered his people to the sword
because he was enraged with his heritage.(CH)
63 Fire consumed his chosen young men,
and his young women had no wedding songs.[g](CI)
64 His priests fell by the sword,
and the widows could not lament.(CJ)
65 The Lord awoke as if from sleep,
like a warrior from the effects of wine.(CK)
66 He beat back his foes;
he gave them lasting disgrace.(CL)
67 He rejected the tent of Joseph
and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
68 He chose instead the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion, which he loved.(CM)
69 He built his sanctuary like the heights,
like the earth that he established forever.(CN)
70 He chose David his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;(CO)
71 he brought him from tending ewes
to be shepherd over his people Jacob—
