Chapter 29
Offerings for the Temple. 1 King David then said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, is still young and inexperienced; the work, however, is great, for this palace is not meant for human beings, but for the Lord God.(A) 2 For this reason I have stored up for the house of my God, as far as I was able, gold for what will be made of gold, silver for what will be made of silver, bronze for what will be made of bronze, iron for what will be made of iron, wood for what will be made of wood, onyx stones and settings for them, carnelian and mosaic stones, every other kind of precious stone, and great quantities of marble.(B) 3 But now, because of the delight I take in the house of my God, in addition to all that I stored up for the holy house, I give to the house of my God my personal fortune in gold and silver: 4 three thousand talents of Ophir gold, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the rooms,(C) 5 for the various utensils to be made of gold and silver, and for every work that is to be done by artisans. Now, who else will contribute generously and consecrate themselves this day to the Lord?”(D)
6 Then the heads of the families, the tribal commanders of Israel, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and those who had command of the king’s affairs came forward willingly(E) 7 and contributed for the service of the house of God five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand talents of iron.(F) 8 Those who had precious stones gave them into the keeping of Jehiel the Gershonite for the treasury of the house of the Lord.(G) 9 The people rejoiced over these free-will offerings, for they had been contributed to the Lord wholeheartedly. King David also rejoiced greatly.(H)
David’s Prayer. 10 Then David blessed the Lord in the sight of the whole assembly. David said:
“Blessed are you, Lord,
God of Israel our father,
from eternity to eternity.
11 Yours, Lord, are greatness and might,
majesty, victory, and splendor.
For all in heaven and on earth is yours;
yours, Lord, is kingship;
you are exalted as head over all.
12 Riches and glory are from you,
and you have dominion over all.
In your hand are power and might;
it is yours to give greatness and strength to all.(I)
13 Therefore, our God, we give you thanks
and we praise the majesty of your name.
14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should have the means to contribute so freely? For everything is from you, and what we give is what we have from you. 15 For before you we are strangers and travelers, like all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without a future.(J) 16 Lord our God, all this wealth that we have brought together to build you a house for your holy name comes from you and is entirely yours. 17 I know, my God, that you put hearts to the test and that you take pleasure in integrity. With a whole heart I have willingly given all these things, and now with joy I have seen your people here present also giving to you generously. 18 Lord, God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,(K) keep such thoughts in the hearts and minds of your people forever, and direct their hearts toward you. 19 Give to my son Solomon a wholehearted desire to keep your commandments, precepts, and statutes, that he may carry out all these plans and build the palace for which I have made preparation.”
20 Then David told the whole assembly, “Now bless the Lord your God!” And the whole assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their ancestors, bowing down in homage before the Lord and before the king. 21 On the following day they brought sacrifices and burnt offerings to the Lord, a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, together with their libations and many other sacrifices for all Israel; 22 and on that day they ate and drank in the Lord’s presence with great rejoicing.
Solomon Anointed. Then for a second time[a] they proclaimed David’s son Solomon king, and they anointed him for the Lord as ruler, and Zadok as priest. 23 Thereafter Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king succeeding his father David; he prospered, and all Israel obeyed him.(L) 24 All the commanders and warriors, and also all the other sons of King David, swore allegiance to King Solomon. 25 And the Lord exalted Solomon greatly in the eyes of all Israel, giving him a glorious reign such as had not been enjoyed by any king over Israel before him.(M)
David’s Death. 26 Thus David, the son of Jesse, had reigned over all Israel. 27 He was king over Israel for forty years: he was king seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.(N) 28 He died at a ripe old age, rich in years and wealth and glory, and his son Solomon succeeded him as king.(O)
29 Now the deeds of King David, first and last, are recorded in the history of Samuel the seer, the history of Nathan the prophet, and the history of Gad the seer,(P) 30 together with the particulars of his reign and valor, and of the events that affected him and all Israel and all the kingdoms of the earth.

29 Împăratul David a zis întregii adunări: „Fiul meu Solomon, singurul pe care l-a ales Dumnezeu, este tânăr şi plăpând(A), şi lucrarea este însemnată, căci casa aceasta nu este pentru un om, ci este pentru Domnul Dumnezeu. 2 Mi-am întrebuinţat toate puterile să pregătesc pentru Casa Dumnezeului meu aur pentru ceea ce trebuie să fie de aur, argint pentru ceea ce trebuie să fie de argint, aramă pentru ceea ce trebuie să fie de aramă, fier pentru ceea ce trebuie să fie de fier şi lemn pentru ceea ce trebuie să fie de lemn, pietre de onix(B) şi pietre scumpe de legat, pietre strălucitoare şi de felurite culori, tot felul de pietre scumpe şi marmură albă multă. 3 Mai mult, în dragostea mea pentru Casa Dumnezeului meu, dau Casei Dumnezeului meu aurul şi argintul pe care-l am, afară de tot ce am pregătit pentru casa Sfântului Locaş: 4 trei mii de talanţi de aur, de aur de Ofir(C), şi şapte mii de talanţi de argint curăţit pentru îmbrăcarea pereţilor clădirilor, 5 aurul pentru ceea ce trebuie să fie de aur şi argintul pentru ceea ce trebuie să fie de argint şi pentru toate lucrările pe care le vor face lucrătorii. Cine vrea să-şi mai aducă de bunăvoie astăzi darurile înaintea Domnului?” 6 Căpeteniile(D) caselor părinteşti, căpeteniile seminţiilor lui Israel, căpeteniile peste mii şi peste sute şi îngrijitorii averii(E) împăratului au adus daruri de bunăvoie. 7 Au dat pentru slujba Casei lui Dumnezeu: cinci mii de talanţi de aur, zece mii de darici, zece mii de talanţi de argint, optsprezece mii de talanţi de aramă şi o sută de mii de talanţi de fier. 8 Cei ce aveau pietre scumpe le-au dat pentru vistieria Casei Domnului în mâinile lui Iehiel(F), Gherşonitul. 9 Poporul s-a bucurat de darurile lor de bunăvoie(G), căci le dădeau cu dragă inimă Domnului, şi împăratul David, de asemenea, s-a bucurat mult.
Rugăciunea lui David
10 David a binecuvântat pe Domnul în faţa întregii adunări. El a zis: „Binecuvântat să fii Tu din veac în veac, Doamne, Dumnezeul părintelui nostru Israel! 11 Ale Tale(H) sunt, Doamne, mărirea, puterea şi măreţia, veşnicia şi slava, căci tot ce este în cer şi pe pământ este al Tău! A Ta, Doamne, este domnia, căci Tu Te înalţi ca un stăpân mai presus de orice! 12 De la Tine vin bogăţia(I) şi slava, Tu stăpâneşti peste tot, în mâna Ta sunt tăria şi puterea şi mâna Ta poate să mărească şi să întărească toate lucrurile. 13 Acum, Dumnezeul nostru, Te lăudăm şi preamărim Numele Tău cel slăvit. 14 Căci ce sunt eu şi ce este poporul meu, ca să putem să-Ţi aducem daruri de bunăvoie? Totul vine de la Tine şi din mâna Ta primim ce-Ţi aducem. 15 Înaintea Ta noi suntem nişte străini(J) şi locuitori, ca toţi părinţii noştri. Zilele noastre(K) pe pământ sunt ca umbra şi fără nicio nădejde. 16 Doamne, Dumnezeul nostru, din mâna Ta vin toate aceste bogăţii pe care le-am pregătit ca să-Ţi zidim o casă, Ţie, Numelui Tău celui sfânt, şi ale Tale sunt toate. 17 Ştiu, Dumnezeule, că Tu cercetezi(L) inima şi că iubeşti(M) curăţia de inimă, de aceea Ţi-am adus toate aceste daruri de bunăvoie în curăţia inimii mele şi am văzut acum cu bucurie pe poporul Tău, care se află aici, aducându-Ţi de bunăvoie darurile lui. 18 Doamne, Dumnezeul părinţilor noştri Avraam, Isaac şi Israel! Ţine totdeauna în inima poporului Tău aceste porniri şi aceste gânduri şi întăreşte-i inima în Tine. 19 Dă fiului meu Solomon(N) o inimă bună, ca să păzească poruncile Tale, învăţăturile Tale şi legile Tale, ca să împlinească toate aceste lucruri şi să zidească el casa pentru care am făcut(O) pregătiri.”
Ungerea lui Solomon
20 David a zis întregii adunări: „Binecuvântaţi pe Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru.” Şi toată adunarea a binecuvântat pe Domnul, Dumnezeul părinţilor lor. Ei s-au plecat şi s-au închinat înaintea Domnului şi înaintea împăratului. 21 A doua zi după aceasta, au adus ca jertfă şi ardere-de-tot Domnului o mie de viţei, o mie de berbeci şi o mie de miei, împreună cu jertfele de băutură obişnuite şi alte jertfe în mare număr pentru tot Israelul. 22 Au mâncat şi au băut în ziua aceea înaintea Domnului cu mare bucurie, au făcut a doua oară împărat pe Solomon, fiul lui David, l-au uns(P) înaintea Domnului ca domn şi au uns pe Ţadoc ca preot. 23 Solomon a şezut pe scaunul de domnie al Domnului, ca împărat în locul tatălui său David. El a propăşit, şi tot Israelul l-a ascultat. 24 Toate căpeteniile şi vitejii şi chiar toţi fiii împăratului David s-au supus(Q) împăratului Solomon. 25 Domnul a înălţat tot mai mult pe Solomon sub ochii întregului Israel şi i-a făcut domnia mai strălucită(R) decât a fost a oricărui împărat al lui Israel înaintea lui.
Moartea lui David
26 David, fiul lui Isai, a domnit peste tot Israelul. 27 Vremea(S) cât a domnit peste Israel a fost de patruzeci de ani: la(T) Hebron a domnit şapte ani şi la Ierusalim a domnit treizeci şi trei de ani. 28 A murit(U) după o bătrâneţe fericită, sătul(V) de zile, de bogăţie şi de slavă. Şi, în locul lui, a domnit fiul său Solomon. 29 Faptele împăratului David, cele dintâi şi cele de pe urmă, sunt scrise în cartea lui Samuel, văzătorul, şi în cartea prorocului Natan, şi în cartea prorocului Gad, 30 împreună cu toată domnia şi toate(W) isprăvile lui, precum şi ce s-a petrecut pe vremea lui, fie în Israel, fie în toate împărăţiile celorlalte ţări.

Gifts for Building the Temple
29 King David spoke to all the Israelites who were gathered. He said, “God chose my son Solomon. Solomon is young and hasn’t yet learned what he needs to know. But the work is important. This palace is not for people. It is for the Lord God. 2 I have done my best to prepare for building the Temple of God. I have given gold for the things made of gold. I have given silver for the things made of silver. I have given bronze for the things made of bronze. I have given iron for the things made of iron. I have given wood for the things made of wood. I have given onyx for the settings and turquoise. I have given gems of many different colors. I have given valuable stones and white marble. I have given much of all these things. 3 I have already given this for the Temple. But now I am also giving my own treasures of gold and silver. I am doing this because I really want the Temple of my God to be built. 4 I have given about 220,000 pounds of pure gold from Ophir. And I have given about 520,000 pounds of pure silver. They will be used to cover the walls of the buildings. 5 They will also be used for all the gold and silver work. Skilled men may use the gold and silver to make things for the Temple. Now, who is ready to give himself to the service of the Lord today?”
6 The family leaders and the leaders of the tribes of Israel gave their valuable things. The commanders of 1,000 men and of 100 men gave their valuable things. And the leaders responsible for the king’s work gave their valuable things. 7 These are the things they gave for the Temple of God: about 380,000 pounds of gold, about 750,000 pounds of silver, about 1,350,000 pounds of bronze and about 7,500,000 pounds of iron. 8 People who had valuable gems gave them to the treasury of the Temple of the Lord. Jehiel, from the Gershon family, took care of the valuable gems. 9 The leaders gave freely and completely to the Lord. The people were happy to see their leaders give so gladly. King David was also very happy.
David’s Prayer
10 David praised the Lord in front of all of the people who were gathered. He said:
“We praise you, Lord.
You are the God of our father Israel.
We praise you forever and ever.
11 Lord, you are great and powerful.
You have glory, victory and honor.
Everything in heaven and on earth belongs to you.
The kingdom belongs to you, Lord.
You are the ruler over everything.
12 Riches and honor come from you.
You rule everything.
You have the power and strength
to make anyone great and strong.
13 Now, our God, we thank you.
And we praise your glorious name.
14 “These things did not really come from me and my people.
Everything comes from you.
We have given you back what you gave us.
15 We are like foreigners and strangers.
All our ancestors were also foreigners and strangers.
Our time on earth is like a shadow.
There is no hope.
16 Lord our God, we have gathered all this to build your Temple.
We will build it for worship to you.
But everything has come from you.
Everything belongs to you.
17 I know, my God, that you test people’s hearts.
You are happy when people do what is right.
I was happy to give all these things.
I gave with an honest heart.
Your people gathered here are happy to give to you.
I am happy to see their giving.
18 Lord, you are the God of our ancestors.
You are the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Please help your people to want to serve you always.
And help them to want to obey you always.
19 Give my son Solomon a strong desire to serve you.
Help him always obey your commands, laws and rules.
Help him build the Temple
for which I have prepared.”
20 Then David said to all the people who were gathered, “Praise the Lord your God.” So they all praised the Lord, the God their ancestors worshiped. They bowed to the ground to give honor to the Lord and the king.
Solomon Becomes King
21 The next day the people made sacrifices to the Lord. They offered burnt offerings to him. They offered 1,000 bulls, 1,000 male sheep and 1,000 male lambs. They also brought drink offerings. Many sacrifices were made for all the people of Israel. 22 That day the people ate and drank with much joy. And the Lord was with them.
And they made David’s son Solomon king for the second time. They poured olive oil on Solomon to appoint him king. And they poured oil on Zadok to appoint him as priest. They did this in the presence of the Lord. 23 Then Solomon sat on the Lord’s throne as king. He took his father David’s place. Solomon was very successful. And all the people of Israel obeyed him. 24 All the leaders and soldiers and King David’s sons accepted Solomon as king. They promised to obey him. 25 The Lord made Solomon great before all the Israelites. The Lord gave Solomon much honor. No king of Israel before Solomon had such honor.
David’s Death
26 David son of Jesse was king over all Israel. 27 He was king for 40 years. He ruled in the city of Hebron for 7 years. And he ruled in Jerusalem for 33 years. 28 David died when he was old. He had lived a good, long life. He had received many riches and honors. And David’s son Solomon became king after him.
29 Everything King David did as king, from beginning to end, is recorded. Those things are written in the records of Samuel the seer. And they are in the records of Nathan the prophet and the records of Gad the seer. 30 Those writings tell what David did as king of Israel. They tell about his power and all that happened to him. And they tell what happened to Israel and all the kingdoms around them.

29 Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God.
2 Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance.
3 Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house.
4 Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal:
5 The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord?
6 Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king's work, offered willingly,
7 And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron.
8 And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the Lord, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite.
9 Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.
10 Wherefore David blessed the Lord before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.
11 Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all.
12 Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.
13 Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.
14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.
15 For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
16 O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own.
17 I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.
18 O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee:
19 And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision.
20 And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the Lord your God. And all the congregation blessed the Lord God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the Lord, and the king.
21 And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings unto the Lord, on the morrow after that day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel:
22 And did eat and drink before the Lord on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed him unto the Lord to be the chief governor, and Zadok to be priest.
23 Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him.
24 And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king.
25 And the Lord magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.
26 Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.
27 And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
28 And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.
29 Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,
30 With all his reign and his might, and the times that went over him, and over Israel, and over all the kingdoms of the countries.
