Commanders of the Army
27 Now this is the number of the sons of Israel, the heads of fathers’ households, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king in all the affairs of the divisions which came in and went out month by month throughout the months of the year, each division numbering twenty-four thousand:
2 Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel [a](A)was in charge of the first division for the first month; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 3 He was from the sons of Perez, and was chief of all the commanders of the army for the first month. 4 Dodai the Ahohite and his division was in charge of the division for the second month, Mikloth being the chief officer; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 5 The third commander of the army for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, as chief; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 6 This Benaiah was the mighty man of the thirty, and was in charge of thirty; and over his division was his son Ammizabad. 7 The fourth, for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 8 The fifth, for the fifth month was the commander Shamhuth the Izrahite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 9 The sixth, for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 10 The seventh, for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite of the sons of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 11 The eighth, for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite of the Zerahites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 12 The ninth, for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite of the Benjaminites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 13 The tenth, for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite of the Zerahites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 14 The eleventh, for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite of the sons of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 15 The twelfth, for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite of Othniel; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.
Chief Officers of the Tribes
16 Now in charge of the tribes of Israel: chief officer for the Reubenites was Eliezer the son of Zichri; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maacah; 17 for Levi, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok; 18 for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri the son of Michael; 19 for Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jeremoth the son of Azriel; 20 for the sons of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah; 21 for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner; 22 for Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. (B)These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel. 23 But David did not [b]count those twenty years of age and under, (C)because the Lord had said He would multiply Israel (D)as the stars of heaven. 24 Joab the son of Zeruiah had begun to count them, but did not finish; and because of (E)this, wrath came upon Israel, and the number was not included in the account of the chronicles of King David.
Various Overseers
25 Now Azmaveth the son of Adiel was responsible for the king’s storehouses. And Jonathan the son of Uzziah was responsible for the storehouses in the country, the cities, the villages, and the towers. 26 Ezri the son of Chelub was responsible for the [c]agricultural workers who tilled the soil. 27 Shimei the Ramathite was responsible for the vineyards; and Zabdi the Shiphmite was responsible for the [d]produce of the vineyards stored in the wine cellars. 28 Baal-hanan the Gederite was responsible for the olive and (F)sycamore trees in the [e]Shephelah; and Joash was responsible for the stores of oil. 29 Shitrai the Sharonite was responsible for the cattle which were grazing in (G)Sharon; and Shaphat the son of Adlai was responsible for the cattle in the valleys. 30 Obil the Ishmaelite was responsible for the camels; and Jehdeiah the Meronothite was responsible for the donkeys. 31 Jaziz the (H)Hagrite was responsible for the flocks. All these were [f]overseers of the property which belonged to King David.
Counselors
32 Also Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni [g]tutored the king’s sons. 33 (I)Ahithophel was counselor to the king; and (J)Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend. 34 Jehoiada the son of (K)Benaiah, and (L)Abiathar [h]succeeded Ahithophel; and Joab was the (M)commander of the king’s army.

De aanvoerders van het leger
27 Dit is de lijst van de familiehoofden, de legeraanvoerders en de ambtenaren die voor de koning werkten.
Ook het leger was verdeeld in groepen. Elke maand van het jaar deed één groep dienst. Ze losten elkaar dus elke maand af. Elke groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen.
2 Aanvoerder van de eerste groep, voor de eerste maand, was Jasobam. 3 Hij was de zoon van Zabdiël uit de familie van Perez. Hij was het hoofd van de andere elf aanvoerders.
4 Aanvoerder van de tweede groep, voor de tweede maand, was Dodai uit de familie van Ahoa. Aanvoerder Miklot hoorde bij zijn groep, met 24.000 mannen.
5 Aanvoerder van de derde groep, voor de derde maand, was Benaja, de zoon van hogepriester Jojada. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen. 6 Deze Benaja werd later aanvoerder van Davids 30 helden. Toen werd zijn zoon Ammizabad de aanvoerder van de groep van de derde maand.
7 Aanvoerder van de vierde groep, voor de vierde maand, was Azaël, de broer van Joab. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen. Toen Azaël werd gedood, werd zijn zoon Zebadja de aanvoerder.
8 Aanvoerder van de vijfde groep, voor de vijfde maand, was aanvoerder Samut, uit de familie van Jizra. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen.
9 Aanvoerder van de zesde groep, voor de zesde maand, was Ira, de zoon van Ikkes uit Tekoa. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen.
10 Aanvoerder van de zevende groep, voor de zevende maand, was Helez uit Bet-Pelet. Hij was uit de stam van Efraïm. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen.
11 Aanvoerder van de achtste groep, voor de achtste maand, was Sibbechai uit Husa. Hij was uit de familie van Zera. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen.
12 Aanvoerder van de negende groep, voor de negende maand, was Abiëzer uit Anatot. Hij was uit de stam van Benjamin. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen.
13 Aanvoerder van de tiende groep, voor de tiende maand, was Maharai uit Netofa. Hij was uit de familie van Zera. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen.
14 Aanvoerder van de elfde groep, voor de elfde maand, was Benaja uit Piraton. Hij was uit de stam van Efraïm. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen.
15 Aanvoerder van de twaalfde groep, voor de twaalfde maand, was Heldai uit Netofa. Hij was uit de familie van Otniël. Zijn groep bestond uit 24.000 mannen.
De stamhoofden
16 De volgende mannen waren aanvoerders van het leger van hun stam:
van de stam van Ruben: Eliëzer, de zoon van Zichri.
Van de stam van Simeon: Sefatja, de zoon van Maächa.
17 Van de stam van Levi: Hasabja, de zoon van Kemuel.
Van de familie van Aäron: Zadok.
18 Van de stam van Juda: Elihu, een van Davids broers.
Van de stam van Issaschar: Omri, de zoon van Michaël.
19 Van de stam van Zebulon: Jismaja, de zoon van Obadja.
Van de stam van Naftali: Jerimot, de zoon van Azriël.
20 Van de stam van Efraïm: Hosea, de zoon van Azarja.
Van de ene helft van de stam van Manasse: Joël, de zoon van Pedaja.
21 Van de andere helft van de stam van Manasse, in Gilead: Jiddo, de zoon van Zecharja.
Van de stam van Benjamin: Jaäsiël, de zoon van Abner.
22 Van de stam van Dan: Azarel, de zoon van Jeroham.
Dit waren de aanvoerders van Israëls stammen.
23 David had niet de mannen laten tellen die jonger dan 20 jaar waren.[a] Want de Heer had gezegd, dat Hij Israël zo ontelbaar zou maken als de sterren aan de hemel. 24 Joab, de zoon van Zeruja, was wel met tellen begonnen, maar had het niet afgemaakt. Want de Heer was er kwaad over geworden dat David het volk liet tellen. Daarom is in de boeken met de geschiedenis van koning David niet opgeschreven hoeveel mannen het waren.[b]
De ambtenaren
25 Azmavet, de zoon van Adiël, beheerde de voorraden van de koning in Jeruzalem.
Jonatan, de zoon van Uzzia, ging over de voorraden van de koning op het land, in de steden en dorpen en in de wachttorens.
26 Esri, de zoon van Chelub, ging over de arbeiders die voor de koning op het land moesten werken.
27 Simeï uit Rama ging over de wijngaarden. Maar Zabdi uit Sefam ging over de oogsten daarvan en de wijn.
28 Baäl-Hanan uit Geder ging over de olijfbomen en de wilde vijgenbomen in de vlakte. Maar Joas ging over de voorraden olijf-olie.
29 Sitrai uit Saron ging over de koeien die in de Saron-vlakte graasden. Maar Safat, de zoon van Adlai, ging over de koeien in de dalen.
30 Obil uit de familie van Ismaël ging over de kamelen.
Jechdeja uit Meronot ging over de ezels.
31 Jaziz uit de familie van Hagar ging over de schapen en geiten.
Deze mannen waren de opzichters van alles wat koning David bezat.
32 Jonatan, Davids oom, was Davids raadgever en zijn schrijver. Hij was een verstandig man.
Jehiël, de zoon van Hachmoni, hield zich bezig met de opvoeding van de zonen van de koning.
33 Achitofel was ook raadgever van de koning.
Husai was de beste vriend van de koning.
34 Achitofel was de belangrijkste raadgever van de koning. Behalve hij waren ook Jojada, de zoon van Benaja, en Abjatar raadgevers van de koning.
Joab was de aanvoerder van het leger.

Army Divisions
27 This is the list of the Israelites—heads of families, commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and their officers, who served the king in all that concerned the army divisions that were on duty month by month throughout the year. Each division consisted of 24,000 men.
2 In charge of the first division, for the first month, was Jashobeam(A) son of Zabdiel. There were 24,000 men in his division. 3 He was a descendant of Perez and chief of all the army officers for the first month.
4 In charge of the division for the second month was Dodai(B) the Ahohite; Mikloth was the leader of his division. There were 24,000 men in his division.
5 The third army commander, for the third month, was Benaiah(C) son of Jehoiada the priest. He was chief and there were 24,000 men in his division. 6 This was the Benaiah who was a mighty warrior among the Thirty and was over the Thirty. His son Ammizabad was in charge of his division.
7 The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel(D) the brother of Joab; his son Zebadiah was his successor. There were 24,000 men in his division.
8 The fifth, for the fifth month, was the commander Shamhuth(E) the Izrahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
9 The sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira(F) the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
10 The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez(G) the Pelonite, an Ephraimite. There were 24,000 men in his division.

18 over Judah: Elihu, a brother of David;
over Issachar: Omri son of Michael;

over Naphtali: Jerimoth son of Azriel;
20 over the Ephraimites: Hoshea son of Azaziah;
over half the tribe of Manasseh: Joel son of Pedaiah;
21 over the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo son of Zechariah;
over Benjamin: Jaasiel son of Abner;
22 over Dan: Azarel son of Jeroham.
These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.
23 David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less,(P) because the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars(Q) in the sky. 24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. God’s wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering,(R) and the number was not entered in the book[a] of the annals of King David.
The King’s Overseers
25 Azmaveth son of Adiel was in charge of the royal storehouses.
Jonathan son of Uzziah was in charge of the storehouses in the outlying districts, in the towns, the villages and the watchtowers.
26 Ezri son of Kelub was in charge of the workers who farmed the land.
27 Shimei the Ramathite was in charge of the vineyards.
Zabdi the Shiphmite was in charge of the produce of the vineyards for the wine vats.
28 Baal-Hanan the Gederite was in charge of the olive and sycamore-fig(S) trees in the western foothills.
Joash was in charge of the supplies of olive oil.
29 Shitrai the Sharonite was in charge of the herds grazing in Sharon.(T)
Shaphat son of Adlai was in charge of the herds in the valleys.
30 Obil the Ishmaelite was in charge of the camels.
Jehdeiah the Meronothite was in charge of the donkeys.
31 Jaziz the Hagrite(U) was in charge of the flocks.
All these were the officials in charge of King David’s property.
32 Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of insight and a scribe. Jehiel son of Hakmoni took care of the king’s sons.
33 Ahithophel(V) was the king’s counselor.
Hushai(W) the Arkite was the king’s confidant. 34 Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar.(X)
Joab(Y) was the commander of the royal army.
