De poortwachters
26 Dit is de indeling van de poortwachters.
Uit de familie van de Korachieten: Meselemja, de zoon van Kore uit de familie van Asaf.
2 De zonen van Meselemja: de oudste zoon Zecharja, de tweede zoon Jediaël, de derde zoon Zebadja, de vierde zoon Jatniël, 3 de vijfde zoon Elam, de zesde zoon Johanan, de zevende zoon Eljoënai.
4 De zonen van Obed-Edom: de oudste zoon Semaja, de tweede zoon Jozabad, de derde zoon Joa, de vierde zoon Sachar, de vijfde zoon Netaneël, 5 de zesde zoon Ammiël, de zevende zoon Issaschar, de achtste zoon Peülletai. God had hem veel zonen gegeven. 6 Zijn zoon Semaja kreeg zonen die familiehoofden werden. Het waren dappere helden. 7 Het waren: Otni, Refaël, Obed, Elzabad, Elihu en Semaja, allemaal flinke mannen. 8 Zij zijn allemaal uit de familie van Obed-Edom. In totaal 62 flinke mannen die hun werk goed deden. 9 Uit de familie van Meselemja 18 flinke mannen.
10 Van Hosa, uit de familie van Merari, de zonen: Simri, het familiehoofd (hij was niet de oudste, maar toch had zijn vader hem familiehoofd gemaakt), 11 de tweede zoon Hilkia, de derde zoon Tebalja, de vierde zoon Zecharja. In totaal bestond de familie van Hosa uit 13 mannen.
12 Deze groepen poortwachters, ingedeeld per groepshoofd, hadden net als de anderen de taak om dienst te doen in de tempel van de Heer. 13 Er werd geloot welke familie welke poort moest bewaken. Geen enkele familie werd voorgetrokken.
14 De familie van Selemja kreeg zo de Oostpoort.
De familie van Selemja's zoon Zecharja kreeg de Noordpoort. Zecharja was een verstandige raadgever van de koning.
15 De familie van Obed-Edom kreeg de Zuidpoort. Zijn zonen moesten de voorraadkamers bewaken.[a]
16 De familie van Suppim en Hosa kregen de Westpoort en de Sallechetpoort bij de Steile Straat.
Elke keer als de wacht gewisseld werd, moest hetzelfde aantal Levieten de poorten bewaken: 17 bij de Oostpoort moesten elke dag zes Levieten staan, bij de Noordpoort elke dag vier, bij de Zuidpoort elke dag vier en bij de twee voorraadkamers elke dag twee per voorraadkamer. 18 Bij het bijgebouw aan de Westpoort moesten er vier aan de Hoogstraat staan en twee bij het bijgebouw.
19 Dit was de indeling van de poortwachters uit de families van Korach en Merari.
De bewakers van de schatkamer
20 Ahia stond aan het hoofd van de bewakers. Zij bewaakten de schatten van de tempel van God en de voorwerpen die aan God waren gegeven. 21+22 Verder waren de volgende Levieten bewaker: Zetam en zijn broer Joël, zonen van familiehoofd Jehiëli, die een zoon was van Ladan uit de familie van Gerson. Zij bewaakten de schatten van de tempel van de Heer. 23 Ook de families van Amram, Jizhar, Hebron en Uzzia 24 bewaakten de schatten. Sebuel, uit de familie van Gersom, de zoon van Mozes, had daarbij de leiding. 25 Sebuel was familie van Selomit. Want Sebuels voorvader Gersom had een broer: Eliëzer. Eliëzer had een zoon: Rehabja. De zoon van Rehabja was Jesaja. Zijn zoon was Joram. Zijn zoon was Zichri. En zijn zoon was Selomit. 26 Deze Selomit en zijn broers bewaakten alle geschenken die koning David, de familiehoofden en de legeraanvoerders aan de Heer hadden gegeven. 27 Het waren voorwerpen die ze in de oorlogen hadden buitgemaakt en aan de tempel van de Heer hadden gegeven. 28 Ook alle geschenken van de profeet Samuel, koning Saul de zoon van Kis, aanvoerder Abner de zoon van Ner, aanvoerder Joab de zoon van Zeruja en allerlei andere mensen. Selomit en zijn broers moesten die bewaken.
De belastingophalers
29 Uit de familie van Jizhar waren Kenanja en zijn zonen ambtenaren en rechters in Israël. 30 Hasabja en nog 1700 flinke mannen uit de familie van Hebron hielden toezicht op het ophalen van de belasting voor de tempel en voor de koning. Maar alleen in het deel van Israël dat aan de westkant van de Jordaan lag. 31 Jeria had de leiding. Toen David 40 jaar koning was, werd er onderzocht wie er allemaal bij de familie van Hebron hoorden. Er bleken veel dappere mannen uit zijn familie in Jaëzer in Gilead te wonen. 32 Dat waren nog 2.700 flinke mannen, die familiehoofden waren. Zij werden door koning David aangewezen om in het gebied aan de oostkant van de Jordaan toezicht te houden op het ophalen van de belasting voor de tempel en voor de koning. Dus in het gebied van de stammen van Ruben en Benjamin en de helft van de stam van Manasse.

26 Concerning the divisions of the porters: Of the Korhites was Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.
2 And the sons of Meshelemiah were, Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,
3 Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Elioenai the seventh.
4 Moreover the sons of Obededom were, Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, and Sacar the fourth, and Nethaneel the fifth.
5 Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peulthai the eighth: for God blessed him.
6 Also unto Shemaiah his son were sons born, that ruled throughout the house of their father: for they were mighty men of valour.
7 The sons of Shemaiah; Othni, and Rephael, and Obed, Elzabad, whose brethren were strong men, Elihu, and Semachiah.
8 All these of the sons of Obededom: they and their sons and their brethren, able men for strength for the service, were threescore and two of Obededom.
9 And Meshelemiah had sons and brethren, strong men, eighteen.
10 Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons; Simri the chief, (for though he was not the firstborn, yet his father made him the chief;)
11 Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brethren of Hosah were thirteen.
12 Among these were the divisions of the porters, even among the chief men, having wards one against another, to minister in the house of the Lord.
13 And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.
14 And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.
15 To Obededom southward; and to his sons the house of Asuppim.
16 To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward, with the gate Shallecheth, by the causeway of the going up, ward against ward.
17 Eastward were six Levites, northward four a day, southward four a day, and toward Asuppim two and two.
18 At Parbar westward, four at the causeway, and two at Parbar.
19 These are the divisions of the porters among the sons of Kore, and among the sons of Merari.
20 And of the Levites, Ahijah was over the treasures of the house of God, and over the treasures of the dedicated things.
21 As concerning the sons of Laadan; the sons of the Gershonite Laadan, chief fathers, even of Laadan the Gershonite, were Jehieli.
22 The sons of Jehieli; Zetham, and Joel his brother, which were over the treasures of the house of the Lord.
23 Of the Amramites, and the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites:
24 And Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was ruler of the treasures.
25 And his brethren by Eliezer; Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zichri his son, and Shelomith his son.
26 Which Shelomith and his brethren were over all the treasures of the dedicated things, which David the king, and the chief fathers, the captains over thousands and hundreds, and the captains of the host, had dedicated.
27 Out of the spoils won in battles did they dedicate to maintain the house of the Lord.
28 And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated; and whosoever had dedicated any thing, it was under the hand of Shelomith, and of his brethren.
29 Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were for the outward business over Israel, for officers and judges.
30 And of the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brethren, men of valour, a thousand and seven hundred, were officers among them of Israel on this side Jordan westward in all the business of the Lord, and in the service of the king.
31 Among the Hebronites was Jerijah the chief, even among the Hebronites, according to the generations of his fathers. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valour at Jazer of Gilead.
32 And his brethren, men of valour, were two thousand and seven hundred chief fathers, whom king David made rulers over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, for every matter pertaining to God, and affairs of the king.

The Gatekeepers
26 These are the ·groups [divisions; orders] of the gatekeepers. From the ·family [clan] of Korah, there was Meshelemiah son of Kore, who was from Asaph’s ·family [descendants]. 2 Meshelemiah had sons. Zechariah was his ·first son [firstborn], Jediael was second, Zebadiah was third, Jathniel was fourth, 3 Elam was fifth, Jehohanan was sixth, and Eliehoenai was seventh.
4 Obed-Edom had sons. Shemaiah was his ·first son [firstborn], Jehozabad was second, Joah was third, Sacar was fourth, Nethanel was fifth, 5 Ammiel was sixth, Issachar was seventh, and Peullethai was eighth. God indeed blessed Obed-Edom.
6 Obed-Edom’s son Shemaiah also had sons. They ·were leaders in [ruled over] their father’s ·family [L house] because they were ·capable men [highly respected; L mighty men of valor]. 7 Shemaiah’s sons were Othni, Rephael, Obed and Elzabad, whose ·brothers [relatives] Elihu and Semakiah were ·skilled workers [or valiant men; or also respected]. 8 All these were Obed-Edom’s descendants. They and their sons and ·relatives [brothers; grandsons] were capable men and ·strong [well-qualified] workers. Obed-Edom had sixty-two ·descendants [relatives] in all.
9 Meshelemiah had sons and ·relatives [brothers] who were ·skilled workers [capable/respected men]. In all, there were eighteen.
10 From the Merari ·family [clan], Hosah had sons. Shimri, although not the oldest son, was chosen by his father to be in charge. 11 Hilkiah was his second son, Tabaliah was third, and Zechariah was fourth. In all, Hosah had thirteen sons and ·relatives [brothers].
12 These were the leaders of the ·groups [divisions; orders] of gatekeepers, and they served in the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord, as did their ·relatives [brothers]. 13 By throwing lots, each ·family [clan] chose a gate to guard. ·Young [Small] and ·old [great] threw lots.
14 ·Meshelemiah [or Shelemiah; v. 2] was chosen by lot to guard the East Gate. Then lots were ·thrown [cast] for Meshelemiah’s son Zechariah. He was a ·wise counselor [prudent advisor] and was chosen for the North Gate. 15 Obed-Edom was ·chosen for [allotted] the South Gate, and Obed-Edom’s sons were ·chosen to guard [allotted] the storehouse. 16 Shuppim and Hosah were chosen for the West Gate and the Shalleketh Gate on the ·upper [ascending] road [C to the Temple].
·Guards stood side by side with guards [or Guard duty was evenly divided; L A guard alongside a guard]. 17 Six Levites stood guard every day at the East Gate; four stood guard every day at the North Gate; four stood guard every day at the South Gate; and two at a time guarded the storehouse. 18 There were two guards at the ·western court [colonnade; Parbar; C the gateway leading up to the Temple] and four guards on the road.
19 These were the ·groups [divisions; orders] of the gatekeepers from the ·families [clans; L sons] of Korah and Merari.
Other Leaders
20 ·Other [Their fellow/brother] Levites were ·responsible for guarding [in charge of] the treasuries of the ·Temple [L house] of God and for the ·places where the holy items were kept [treasuries of dedicated/consecrated gifts].
21 ·Ladan [or Libni] was Gershon’s son and the ancestor of several ·family groups [clans]. ·Jehiel [or Jehieli; 23:8] was a ·leader [chief] of one of the ·family groups [clans]. 22 His sons were Zetham and Joel his brother, and they were ·responsible for [in charge of] the treasuries of the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord.
23 Other leaders were chosen from the ·family groups [clans] of Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 24 Shubael,[a] the descendant of Gershom, who was Moses’ son, was the ·leader [chief] ·responsible for [in charge of] the treasuries. 25 These were Shubael’s relatives from Eliezer: Eliezer’s son Rehabiah, Rehabiah’s son Jeshaiah, Jeshaiah’s son Joram, Joram’s son Zicri, and Zicri’s son Shelomith. 26 Shelomith and his relatives were ·responsible for [in charge of] ·everything that had been collected for the Temple [the treasuries of dedicated/consecrated gifts collected] by King David, by the heads of ·families [clans], by the commanders of a thousand men and of a hundred men, and by other army ·commanders [officers]. 27 They also ·gave [dedicated] some of the ·things they had [plunder; spoil] taken in wars to be used in repairing the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. 28 Shelomith and his relatives took care of all the ·holy items [dedicated/consecrated gifts]. Some had been given by Samuel the ·seer [prophet], Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Zeruiah.
29 Kenaniah was from the Izhar ·family [clan]. He and his sons worked outside the ·Temple [L house] as officers and judges in Israel.
30 Hashabiah was from the Hebron ·family [clan]. He and his relatives were ·responsible for [in charge of] the Lord’s work and ·the king’s business [served the king] in Israel west of the Jordan River. There were seventeen hundred ·skilled [capable; respected] men in Hashabiah’s group. 31 The ·history [genealogy] of the Hebron ·family [clan] shows that Jeriah was their ·leader [chief]. In David’s fortieth year ·as king [of reign], the ·records [genealogies] were searched, and some ·capable [skilled; respected] men of the Hebron ·family [clan] were found living at Jazer in Gilead. 32 Jeriah had twenty-seven hundred relatives who were ·capable [skilled; respected] men and leaders of families. King David ·gave them the responsibility of directing [put them in charge of] the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and ·East [L the half-tribe of] Manasseh in God’s work and the king’s ·business [service].
