The Ammonites and Syrians Defeated(A)
19 It(B) happened after this that Nahash the king of the people of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place. 2 Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came to Hanun in the land of the people of Ammon to comfort him.
3 And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, [a]“Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Did his servants not come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”
4 Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved them, and cut off their garments [b]in the middle, at their (C)buttocks, and sent them away. 5 Then some went and told David about the men; and he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”
6 When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves repulsive to David, Hanun and the people of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from [c]Mesopotamia, from Syrian Maacah, (D)and from [d]Zobah. 7 So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, with the king of Maacah and his people, who came and encamped before Medeba. Also the people of Ammon gathered together from their cities, and came to battle.
8 Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. 9 Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array before the gate of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
10 When Joab saw that the battle line was against him before and behind, he chose some of Israel’s best and put them in battle array against the Syrians. 11 And the rest of the people he put under the command of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in battle array against the people of Ammon. 12 Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you. 13 Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
14 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. 15 When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai his brother, and entered the city. So Joab went to Jerusalem.
16 Now when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought the Syrians who were beyond [e]the River, and [f]Shophach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. 17 When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan and came upon them, and set up in battle array against them. So when David had set up in battle array against the Syrians, they fought with him. 18 Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed [g]seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand [h]foot soldiers of the Syrians, and killed Shophach the commander of the army. 19 And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became his servants. So the Syrians were not willing to help the people of Ammon anymore.

Derrotas de amonitas y sirios(A)
19 Después de esto, murió Najás, el rey de los amonitas, y en su lugar reinó su hijo. 2 Entonces dijo David:
«Voy a tratar con misericordia a Janún hijo de Najás, porque también su padre me trató con misericordia.»
Entonces envió unos mensajeros para expresarle sus condolencias por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando los mensajeros de David llegaron a la tierra de los amonitas para consolar a Janún, 3 los jefes amonitas le dijeron a Janún:
«¿Y crees que David rinde honores a tu padre, al enviarte estos consoladores? ¿Acaso sus siervos no vienen más bien a espiarte, y a investigar y reconocer la tierra?»
4 Janún tomó entonces a los mensajeros de David y los rapó, les rasgó los vestidos por la mitad, hasta las nalgas, y los mandó de vuelta.
5 Los mensajeros se fueron, y cuando David se enteró de lo que les había sucedido, mando gente a que los recibieran, porque estaban muy ofendidos. Pero el rey mandó que les dijeran:
«Quédense en Jericó hasta que les crezca la barba. Entonces volverán.»
6 Cuando los amonitas vieron que se habían hecho odiosos ante David, Janún y los amonitas enviaron treinta y tres mil kilos de plata a Mesopotamia, Siria, Macá y Soba, para contratar allá carros de guerra y gente de caballería. 7 Y contrataron treinta y dos mil carros de guerra, y al rey de Macá y a su ejército, los cuales vinieron y acamparon frente a Medeba. También los amonitas se juntaron en sus ciudades y salieron a la guerra. 8 Pero David lo supo y envió a Joab y a todo el ejército de sus hombres más valientes.
9 Los amonitas salieron a la entrada de la ciudad y se presentaron en orden de batalla, mientras que los reyes que habían venido se quedaron en el campo. 10 Y al ver Joab que el ataque contra él se había dispuesto por el frente y por la retaguardia, escogió a los mejores soldados israelitas, y con ellos se preparó para enfrentar a los sirios. 11 El resto del ejército lo puso en manos de su hermano Abisay, y los dispuso para enfrentar a los amonitas. 12 Le dijo:
«Si los sirios resultan ser más fuertes que yo, tú vendrás en mi ayuda; pero si los amonitas resultan ser más fuertes que tú, yo iré a ayudarte. 13 ¡Ánimo! ¡Luchemos por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios, y que sea lo que el Señor quiera!»
14 Al avanzar Joab y su ejército para pelear contra los sirios, éstos huyeron de él. 15 Y al ver los amonitas que los sirios huían, también ellos huyeron delante de Abisay, el hermano de Joab, y se metieron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab volvió a Jerusalén.
16 Cuando los sirios vieron que habían sido vencidos por los israelitas, enviaron mensajeros para que vinieran en su ayuda los sirios que estaban al otro lado del Éufrates, y que eran capitaneados por Sofac, general del ejército de Hadad Ezer. 17 Pero tan pronto como David recibió la noticia, reunió a todos los israelitas, cruzó el Jordán, y se dispuso a presentar batalla contra ellos. En cuanto David ordenó su tropa contra los sirios, éstos lo atacaron, 18 pero huyeron delante de los israelitas. Y David mató a siete mil sirios de los carros de guerra, a cuarenta mil hombres de infantería, y además mató a Sofac, que era el general del ejército. 19 Y al ver los siervos de Hadad Ezer que habían sido derrotados por los israelitas, hicieron la paz con David y fueron sus siervos. Y nunca más los sirios quisieron ayudar a los amonitas.
