The Growth of David’s Army(A)
12 Now (B)these were the men who came to David at (C)Ziklag while he was still a fugitive from Saul the son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men, helpers in the war, 2 armed with bows, using both the right hand and (D)the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows with the bow. They were of Benjamin, Saul’s brethren.
3 The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of [a]Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet the sons of Azmaveth; Berachah, and Jehu the Anathothite; 4 Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, and Jozabad the Gederathite; 5 Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite; 6 Elkanah, Jisshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korahites; 7 and Joelah and Zebadiah the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.
8 Some Gadites [b]joined David at the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor, men trained for battle, who could handle shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were (E)as swift as gazelles on the mountains: 9 Ezer the first, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third, 10 Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth, 11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh, 12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth, 13 Jeremiah the tenth, and Machbanai the eleventh. 14 These were from the sons of Gad, captains of the army; the least was over a hundred, and the greatest was over a (F)thousand. 15 These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it had overflowed all its (G)banks; and they put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.
16 Then some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah came to David at the stronghold. 17 And David went out [c]to meet them, and answered and said to them, “If you have come peaceably to me to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if to betray me to my enemies, since there is no [d]wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers look and bring judgment.” 18 Then the Spirit [e]came upon (H)Amasai, chief of the captains, and he said:
“We are yours, O David;
We are on your side, O son of Jesse!
Peace, peace to you,
And peace to your helpers!
For your God helps you.”
So David received them, and made them captains of the troop.
19 And some from Manasseh defected to David (I)when he was going with the Philistines to battle against Saul; but they did not help them, for the lords of the Philistines sent him away by agreement, saying, (J)“He may defect to his master Saul and endanger our heads.” 20 When he went to Ziklag, those of Manasseh who defected to him were Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, captains of the thousands who were from Manasseh. 21 And they helped David against (K)the bands of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor, and they were captains in the army. 22 For at that time they came to David day by day to help him, until it was a great army, (L)like the army of God.

23 Now these were the numbers of the [f]divisions that were equipped for war, and (M)came to David at (N)Hebron to (O)turn over the kingdom of Saul to him, (P)according to the word of the Lord: 24 of the sons of Judah bearing shield and spear, six thousand eight hundred [g]armed for war; 25 of the sons of Simeon, mighty men of valor fit for war, seven thousand one hundred; 26 of the sons of Levi four thousand six hundred; 27 Jehoiada, the leader of the Aaronites, and with him three thousand seven hundred; 28 (Q)Zadok, a young man, a valiant warrior, and from his father’s house twenty-two captains; 29 of the sons of Benjamin, relatives of Saul, three thousand (until then (R)the greatest part of them had remained loyal to the house of Saul); 30 of the sons of Ephraim twenty thousand eight hundred, mighty men of valor, [h]famous men throughout their father’s house; 31 of the half-tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, who were designated by name to come and make David king; 32 of the sons of Issachar (S)who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command; 33 of Zebulun there were fifty thousand who went out to battle, expert in war with all weapons of war, (T)stouthearted men who could keep ranks; 34 of Naphtali one thousand captains, and with them thirty-seven thousand with shield and spear; 35 of the Danites who could keep battle formation, twenty-eight thousand six hundred; 36 of Asher, those who could go out to war, able to keep battle formation, forty thousand; 37 of the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, from the other side of the Jordan, one hundred and twenty thousand armed for battle with every kind of weapon of war.
38 All these men of war, who could keep ranks, came to Hebron with a loyal heart, to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest of Israel were of (U)one mind to make David king. 39 And they were there with David three days, eating and drinking, for their brethren had prepared for them. 40 Moreover those who were near to them, from as far away as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, were bringing food on donkeys and camels, on mules and oxen—provisions of flour and cakes of figs and cakes of raisins, wine and oil and oxen and sheep abundantly, for there was joy in Israel.

12 Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.
2 They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul's brethren of Benjamin.
3 The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; and Jeziel, and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; and Berachah, and Jehu the Antothite.
4 And Ismaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; and Jeremiah, and Jahaziel, and Johanan, and Josabad the Gederathite,
5 Eluzai, and Jerimoth, and Bealiah, and Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite,

8 And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;
9 Ezer the first, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third,
10 Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,
11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,
12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,
13 Jeremiah the tenth, Machbanai the eleventh.
14 These were of the sons of Gad, captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred, and the greatest over a thousand.
15 These are they that went over Jordan in the first month, when it had overflown all his banks; and they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the east, and toward the west.
16 And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold unto David.
17 And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it.
18 Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.
19 And there fell some of Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.
20 As he went to Ziklag, there fell to him of Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that were of Manasseh.
21 And they helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host.
22 For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God.
23 And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready armed to the war, and came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the Lord.
24 The children of Judah that bare shield and spear were six thousand and eight hundred, ready armed to the war.
25 Of the children of Simeon, mighty men of valour for the war, seven thousand and one hundred.
26 Of the children of Levi four thousand and six hundred.
27 And Jehoiada was the leader of the Aaronites, and with him were three thousand and seven hundred;
28 And Zadok, a young man mighty of valour, and of his father's house twenty and two captains.
29 And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul.
30 And of the children of Ephraim twenty thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valour, famous throughout the house of their fathers.
31 And of the half tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, which were expressed by name, to come and make David king.
32 And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.
33 Of Zebulun, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all instruments of war, fifty thousand, which could keep rank: they were not of double heart.
34 And of Naphtali a thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty and seven thousand.
35 And of the Danites expert in war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred.
36 And of Asher, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand.
37 And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand.
38 All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.
39 And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them.
40 Moreover they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.

3 Das Haupt war Achieser, und Joas, Söhne Semahas, des Gibeatiters; Jesiel und Pelet, die Söhne Asmavets; Beracha und Jehu, der Anatotiter. 4 Jismaja, der Gibeoniter, ein Gewaltiger unter den Dreißig, ja, über die Dreißig. 8 Auch von den Gaditern sonderten sich etliche aus zu David auf die Berghöhe in der Wüste, starke Helden und Kriegsleute, die Schilde und Speere führten; deren Angesichter waren wie die Angesichter der Löwen, und sie waren so schnell wie die Gazellen auf den Bergen.
9 Der erste hieß Geser,
der zweite Obadja,
der dritte Eliab;
10 der vierte Mismanna,
der fünfte Jeremia;
11 der sechste Atai;
der siebente Eliel;
12 der achte Johanan;
der neunte Elsabad;
13 der zehnte Jeremia;
der elfte Machbannai.
14 Diese waren von den Kindern Gad, Häupter im Heer; der kleinste unter ihnen nahm es mit hundert, der größte mit tausend auf. 15 Diese sind es, die im ersten Monat über den Jordan gingen, als er alle seine Ufer überflutet hatte, und verjagten alle, die in den Tälern gegen Morgen und Abend wohnten.
16 Es kamen auch von den Kindern Benjamin und Juda auf die Bergfeste zu David. 17 Und David ging zu ihnen hinaus und sprach: Seid ihr in friedlicher Absicht zu mir gekommen, um mir zu helfen, so soll mein Herz mit euch einig sein; wenn aber, um mich meinen Feinden zu verraten, da doch kein Frevel in meinen Händen ist, so sehe der Gott unsrer Väter darein und strafe es!
18 Da kam der Geist[a] über Amasai, das Haupt der Dreißig; der sagte:
„Dein sind wir, David,
und mit dir halten wir’s, du Sohn Isais:
Friede, Friede sei mit dir
und Friede mit deinen Helfern; denn dein Gott hilft dir!“
Also nahm sie David an und setzte sie zu Häuptern über die Kriegsleute.
19 Und von Manasse gingen zu David über, als er mit den Philistern wider Saul in den Streit zog und ihnen doch nicht helfen durfte; denn die Fürsten der Philister schickten ihn nach gehaltenem Rat fort, indem sie sprachen: Es könnte uns den Kopf kosten, wenn er zu Saul, seinem Herrn, überliefe! 20 Als er dann nach Ziklag zog, schlossen sich ihm von Manasse an: Adna, Josabad, Jediael, Michael, Josabad, Elihu und Ziletai, Häupter über Tausendschaften in Manasse. 21 Und sie halfen David wider die Streifschar; denn sie waren alle tapfere Helden und wurden Oberste über das Heer. 22 Auch kamen alle Tage etliche zu David, ihm zu helfen, bis es ein großes Heer ward, wie ein Heer Gottes.

23 Und dies ist die Zahl der Hauptleute über die zum Heeresdienst Gerüsteten, die zu David gen Hebron kamen, um ihm das Königreich Sauls zuzuwenden, nach dem Worte des Herrn:
24 von den Kindern Juda, die Schild und Speer trugen: 6800 zum Krieg Gerüstete;
25 von den Kindern Simeon an tapferen Helden für den Krieg: 7100;
26 von den Kindern Levi: 4600;
27 dazu Jojada, der Fürst [der Nachkommen] von Aaron mit 3700 Mann;
28 Zadok, ein junger Mann, ein tapferer Held, mit seines Vaters Haus, zweiundzwanzig Oberste.
29 Von den Kindern Benjamin, den Brüdern Sauls: 3000; denn bis auf diese Zeit hielten ihrer viele es noch mit dem Hause Sauls;
30 von den Kindern Ephraim: 20,800 tapfere Helden und berühmte Männer im Hause ihrer Väter;
31 von dem halben Stamme Manasse: 18,000, die mit Namen genannt wurden, daß sie kämen, um David zum König zu machen;
32 von den Kindern Issaschar, die sich auf die Zeiten verstanden, um zu wissen, was Israel tun sollte: zweihundert Hauptleute; und alle ihre Brüder folgten ihrem Wort;
33 von Sebulon, von denen, die in das Heer zogen, mit allerlei Kriegswaffen zum Kampf gerüstet: 50,000, bereit, ohne Doppelherzigkeit sich einzureihen;
34 von Naphtali: tausend Oberste und mit ihnen, die Schild und Speer führten, 37,000; -

36 von Asser: 40,000, die in das Heer zogen, zum Streit gerüstet;
37 von denen jenseits des Jordan, von den Rubenitern, Gaditern und dem halben Stamm Manasse mit allerlei Kriegswaffen: 120,000.
38 Alle diese Kriegsleute, zur Schlachtordung gerüstet, kamen von ganzem Herzen gen Hebron, um David zum König zu machen über ganz Israel. Auch das ganze übrige Israel war einmütig dafür, daß man David zum König machte. 39 Und sie waren daselbst bei David drei Tage lang, aßen und tranken; denn ihre Brüder hatten für sie zubereitet. 40 Auch brachten die, welche zunächst bei ihnen wohnten, bis nach Issaschar, Sebulon und Naphtali hin, Brot auf Eseln, Kamelen, Maultieren und Rindern, Mehlspeise, Feigen- und Rosinenkuchen, Wein, Öl, Rinder, Schafe in Menge; denn es war Freude in Israel.

Then David received them and made them officers of his troops.
19 Some of the men of Manasseh deserted to David (O)when he came with the Philistines for the battle against Saul. (Yet he did not help them, for the rulers of the Philistines took counsel and sent him away, saying, (P)“At peril to our heads he will desert to his master Saul.”) 20 As he went to Ziklag, these men of Manasseh deserted to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs of thousands in Manasseh. 21 They helped David against (Q)the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor and were commanders in the army. 22 For from day to day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army, like an army of God.
23 These are the numbers of the divisions of the armed troops (R)who came to David in Hebron (S)to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, (T)according to the word of the Lord. 24 The men of Judah bearing shield and spear were 6,800 armed troops. 25 Of the Simeonites, mighty men of valor for war, 7,100. 26 Of the Levites 4,600. 27 The prince Jehoiada, of the house of Aaron, and with him 3,700. 28 (U)Zadok, a young man mighty in valor, and twenty-two commanders from his own fathers' house. 29 Of the Benjaminites, (V)the kinsmen of Saul, 3,000, of whom the (W)majority had to that point kept their allegiance to the house of Saul. 30 Of the Ephraimites 20,800, mighty men of valor, famous men in their fathers' houses. 31 Of the half-tribe of Manasseh 18,000, who were (X)expressly named to come and make David king. 32 Of Issachar, men who (Y)had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command. 33 Of Zebulun 50,000 seasoned troops, (Z)equipped for battle with all the weapons of war, to help David[c] with (AA)singleness of purpose. 34 Of Naphtali 1,000 commanders with whom were 37,000 men armed with shield and spear. 35 Of the Danites 28,600 men equipped for battle. 36 Of (AB)Asher 40,000 (AC)seasoned troops (AD)ready for battle. 37 Of the Reubenites and Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh from beyond the Jordan, 120,000 men armed with all the weapons of war.
38 All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with (AE)a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a (AF)single mind to make David king. 39 And they were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers had made preparation for them. 40 And also their relatives, from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen, abundant provisions of flour, (AG)cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.
