Saul Takes His Life(A)
10 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. 2 The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.
4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.”
But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. 6 So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.
7 When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.
8 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. 10 They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.(B)
11 When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead(C) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.
13 Saul died(D) because he was unfaithful(E) to the Lord; he did not keep(F) the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium(G) for guidance, 14 and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned(H) the kingdom(I) over to David son of Jesse.

2 And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him, and he was wounded of the archers.
4 Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.
6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.
7 And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa.
9 And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people.
10 And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.
11 And when all Jabeshgilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;
14 And enquired not of the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

13 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had [d]committed against the Lord, (F)because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because (G)he consulted a medium for guidance. 14 But he did not inquire of the Lord; therefore He killed him, and (H)turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

De dood van Saul
10 De Filistijnen vielen de Israëlitische troepen aan en behaalden een overwinning. De Israëlieten sloegen op de vlucht en velen sneuvelden op de hellingen van de berg Gilbóa. 2 Saul en zijn drie zonen Jonathan, Abinadab en Malkisua werden in het nauw gedreven en de drie zonen werden gedood. 3,4 Saul was al enige malen aan een benarde situatie ontkomen, toen de Filistijnse boogschutters hem opnieuw in het nauw dreven. Hij werd nu doodsbang en riep naar zijn lijfwacht: ‘Snel, dood mij met je zwaard, voordat deze onbesneden heidenen mij gevangennemen en wraak op mij nemen.’ Maar de wapendrager durfde dat niet. Daarop nam Saul zijn eigen zwaard en liet zich erin vallen. 5 Toen zijn lijfwacht zag dat hij dood was, liet ook hij zich in zijn zwaard vallen. 6 Zo stierven Saul en zijn drie zonen, het hele gezin kwam op één dag om het leven. 7 Toen de Israëlieten beneden in het dal hoorden dat Saul en zijn zonen waren omgekomen en dat het leger was gevlucht, verlieten zij hun steden in een overhaaste vlucht. De Filistijnen maakten daarvan dankbaar gebruik en vestigden zich daar.
8 Toen de Filistijnen de volgende dag teruggingen naar het slagveld om de lijken te beroven en de buit te verzamelen, vonden zij de lichamen van Saul en zijn zonen op de berg Gilboa. 9 Zij namen Sauls wapenrusting mee en hakten zijn hoofd af. Deze overwinningstekens stuurden zij hun land rond en zij dankten hun afgoden voor de prachtige overwinning. 10 Sauls wapenrusting werd aan de muur van de afgodentempel gehangen en zijn hoofd spijkerden zij aan de muur van de tempel van Dagon. 11 Maar toen de inwoners van de stad Jabes in Gilead hoorden wat de Filistijnen met Saul hadden gedaan, 12 gingen hun moedigste strijders op weg en brachten zijn lichaam en die van zijn zonen terug. Daarna begroeven zij hen onder een eik bij Jabes en huilden en rouwden zeven dagen lang om hen.
13 Saul stierf om zijn ongehoorzaamheid aan de Here en omdat hij een waarzegster had geraadpleegd 14 in plaats van de Here om leiding te vragen. Daarom doodde de Here hem en gaf het koninkrijk aan David, de zoon van Isaï.

10 (A)Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2 And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. 3 The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was wounded by the archers. 4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it. 5 And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died. 6 Thus Saul died; he and his three sons and all his house died together. 7 And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the army[a] had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and lived in them.

He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also (C)consulted a medium, seeking guidance. 14 He (D)did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and (E)turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
