David's Census Brings Pestilence

21 (A)Then (B)Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Go, number Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a report, that I may know their number.” But Joab said, “May the Lord add to his people a hundred times as many as they are! Are they not, my lord the king, all of them my lord's servants? Why then should my lord require this? Why should it be a cause of guilt for Israel?” But the king's word prevailed against Joab. So Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came back to Jerusalem. And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. In all Israel there were (C)1,100,000 men who drew the sword, and in Judah (D)470,000 who drew the sword. (E)But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, for the king's command was abhorrent to Joab.

But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel. And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, please (F)take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.” And the Lord spoke to Gad, David's (G)seer, saying, 10 “Go and say to David, ‘Thus says the Lord, Three things I offer you; choose one of them, that I may do it to you.’” 11 So Gad came to David and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Choose what you will: 12 either (H)three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes while the sword of your enemies overtakes you, or else three days of the sword of the Lord, pestilence on the land, with the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me.” 13 Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is very great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”

14 So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel, and 70,000 men of Israel fell. 15 And God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, the Lord saw, and he (I)relented from the calamity. And he said to the angel who was working destruction, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 16 And David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, and in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, (J)clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces. 17 And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave command to number the people? It is I who have sinned and done great evil. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Lord my God, be against me and against my father's house. But do not let the plague be on your people.”

David Builds an Altar

18 Now (K)the angel of the Lord had commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and raise an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19 So David went up at Gad's word, which he had spoken in the name of the Lord. 20 Now Ornan was threshing wheat. He turned and saw the angel, and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David and went out from the threshing floor and paid homage to David with his face to the ground. 22 And David said to Ornan, “Give me the site of the threshing floor that I may build on it an altar to the Lord—give it to me at its full price—that the plague may be averted from the people.” 23 Then Ornan said to David, “Take it, and let my lord the king do what seems good to him. See, I give the oxen for burnt offerings and the threshing sledges for the wood and the wheat for a grain offering; I give it all.” 24 But King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will buy them for the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, nor offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” 25 So David paid Ornan (L)600 shekels[a] of gold by weight for the site. 26 And David built there an altar to the Lord and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings and called on the Lord, and the Lord[b] (M)answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering. 27 Then the Lord commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.

28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he sacrificed there. 29 For the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering (N)were at that time in the high place at Gibeon, 30 but David could not go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.

22 Then David said, (O)“Here shall be the house of the Lord God and here the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”

David Prepares for Temple Building

David commanded to gather together the (P)resident aliens who were in the land of Israel, and he (Q)set stonecutters to prepare dressed stones for building the house of God. David also provided great quantities of iron for nails for the doors of the gates and for clamps, (R)as well as bronze in quantities beyond weighing, and cedar timbers without number, (S)for the Sidonians and Tyrians brought great quantities of cedar to David. For David said, (T)“Solomon my son is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and glory throughout all lands. I will therefore make preparation for it.” So David provided materials in great quantity before his death.

Solomon Charged to Build the Temple

Then he called for Solomon his son and charged him to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel. David said to Solomon, “My son, (U)I had it in my heart to build a house to the name of the Lord my God. But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, (V)‘You have shed much blood and have waged great wars. You shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed so much blood before me on the earth. Behold, a son shall be born to you who shall be a man of rest. (W)I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies. (X)For his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days. 10 (Y)He shall build a house for my name. (Z)He shall be my son, and I will be his father, and I will establish his royal throne in Israel forever.’

11 “Now, my son, (AA)the Lord be with you, so that you may succeed in building the house of the Lord your God, as he has spoken concerning you. 12 (AB)Only, may the Lord grant you discretion and understanding, that when he gives you charge over Israel you may keep the law of the Lord your God. 13 (AC)Then you will prosper if you are careful to observe the statutes and the rules that the Lord commanded Moses for Israel. (AD)Be strong and courageous. Fear not; do not be dismayed. 14 With great pains I have provided for the house of the Lord (AE)100,000 talents[c] of gold, a million talents of silver, and (AF)bronze and iron beyond weighing, for there is so much of it; timber and stone, too, I have provided. To these you must add. 15 You have an abundance of workmen: stonecutters, masons, carpenters, and all kinds of craftsmen without number, skilled in working 16 gold, silver, bronze, and iron. Arise and work! (AG)The Lord be with you!”

17 David also commanded (AH)all the leaders of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, 18 “Is not the Lord your God with you? And (AI)has he not given you peace[d] on every side? For he has delivered the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land is subdued before the Lord and his people. 19 Now (AJ)set your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God. Arise and build the sanctuary of the Lord God, (AK)so that the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy vessels of God may be brought into a house built (AL)for the name of the Lord.”

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

(A)The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, (B)the son of David, (C)the son of Abraham.

(D)Abraham was the father of Isaac, and (E)Isaac the father of Jacob, and (F)Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and (G)Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,[a] and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by (H)Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and (I)Jesse the father of David the king.

And (J)David was the father of Solomon by (K)the wife of Uriah, and (L)Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,[b] and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, (M)and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos,[c] and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and (N)Josiah the father of (O)Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

12 And after the deportation to Babylon: (P)Jechoniah was the father of (Q)Shealtiel,[d] and (R)Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of (S)Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to (T)the Christ fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 Now the birth of (U)Jesus Christ[e] took place in this way. (V)When his mother Mary had been betrothed[f] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child (W)from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling (X)to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, (Y)an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and (Z)you shall call his name Jesus, (AA)for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 (AB)All this took place (AC)to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

23 (AD)“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
    and they shall call his name (AE)Immanuel”

(which means, God (AF)with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And (AG)he called his name Jesus.

The Visit of the Wise Men

Now (AH)after Jesus was born in (AI)Bethlehem of Judea (AJ)in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[g] from (AK)the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born (AL)king of the Jews? For we saw (AM)his star when it rose[h] and have come to (AN)worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where (AO)the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

(AP)“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
    who will (AQ)shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, (AR)they offered him gifts, (AS)gold and (AT)frankincense and (AU)myrrh. 12 And (AV)being warned (AW)in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

The Flight to Egypt

13 Now when they had departed, behold, (AX)an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. (AY)This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, (AZ)“Out of Egypt I called my son.”

Herod Kills the Children

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 (BA)Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

18 (BB)“A voice was heard in Ramah,
    weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
    she refused to be comforted, because they (BC)are no more.”

The Return to Nazareth

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for (BD)those who sought the child's life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and (BE)being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and lived in a city called (BF)Nazareth, (BG)so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

(BH)In those days (BI)John the Baptist came preaching in (BJ)the wilderness of Judea, (BK)“Repent, for (BL)the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”[i] For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

(BM)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
(BN)‘Prepare[j] the way of the Lord;
    make his paths straight.’”

Now John wore (BO)a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was (BP)locusts and (BQ)wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, (BR)confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of (BS)the Pharisees and (BT)Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, (BU)“You brood of (BV)vipers! Who warned you to flee from (BW)the wrath to come? Bear fruit (BX)in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, (BY)‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from (BZ)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. (CA)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 (CB)“I baptize you with water (CC)for repentance, but (CD)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you (CE)with the Holy Spirit and (CF)fire. 12 His (CG)winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and (CH)gather his wheat into the barn, (CI)but the chaff he will burn with (CJ)unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

13 (CK)Then Jesus came (CL)from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 (CM)John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, (CN)the heavens were opened to him,[k] and he (CO)saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, (CP)a voice from heaven said, (CQ)“This is my beloved Son,[l] with whom I am well pleased.”
