²⁰ And ^(A)Phinehas the son of Eleazar had been the officer over them in time past; the Lord was with him.

The Patriarchs in Egypt

^9 (A)“And the patriarchs, becoming envious, ^(B)sold Joseph into Egypt. ^(C)But God was with him ¹⁰ and delivered him out of all his troubles, ^(D)and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

¹⁸ Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and ^(A)the Lord is with him.”

⁶ Then Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from each tribe; he sent them to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy articles and ^(A)the signal trumpets in his hand.

⁷ Now ^(A)when Phinehas ^(B)the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; ⁸ and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So ^(C)the plague was ^(D)stopped among the children of Israel. ⁹ And ^(E)those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

¹⁰ Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ^11 (F)“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in ^(G)My zeal. ¹² Therefore say, ^(H)‘Behold, I give to him My ^(I)covenant of peace; ¹³ and it shall be to him and ^(J)his descendants after him a covenant of ^(K)an everlasting priesthood, because he was ^(L)zealous for his God, and ^(M)made ^[a]atonement for the children of Israel.’ ”

³³ This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, as all their service for the tabernacle of meeting, under the ^[a]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

²⁸ This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of meeting. And their duties shall be ^(A)under the ^[a]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

¹⁶ “The appointed duty of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest is ^(A)the oil for the light, the ^(B)sweet incense, ^(C)the daily grain offering, the ^(D)anointing oil, the oversight of all the tabernacle, of all that is in it, with the sanctuary and its furnishings.”

³² And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was to be chief over the leaders of the Levites, with oversight of those who kept charge of the sanctuary.
