⁹ “Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,^(A) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.^(B) But God was with him^{(C) 10} and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.^(D)

¹⁸ One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse^(A) of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior.^(B) He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with^(C) him.”

⁶ Moses sent them into battle,^(A) a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas^(B) son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary^(C) and the trumpets^(D) for signaling.

⁷ When Phinehas^(A) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear^(B) in his hand ⁸ and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;^{(C) 9} but those who died in the plague^(D) numbered 24,000.^(E)

¹⁰ The Lord said to Moses, ¹¹ “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.^(F) Since he was as zealous for my honor^(G) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. ¹² Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace^(H) with him. ¹³ He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,^(I) because he was zealous^(J) for the honor^(K) of his God and made atonement^(L) for the Israelites.”^(M)

³³ This is the service of the Merarite clans as they work at the tent of meeting under the direction of Ithamar^(A) son of Aaron, the priest.”

²⁸ This is the service of the Gershonite clans^(A) at the tent of meeting. Their duties are to be under the direction of Ithamar^(B) son of Aaron, the priest.

¹⁶ “Eleazar^(A) son of Aaron, the priest, is to have charge of the oil for the light,^(B) the fragrant incense,^(C) the regular grain offering^(D) and the anointing oil. He is to be in charge of the entire tabernacle and everything in it, including its holy furnishings and articles.”

³² The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar^(A) son of Aaron, the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible^(B) for the care of the sanctuary.^(C)
