^33 (A)Ner^[a] begot Kish, Kish begot Saul, and Saul begot Jonathan, Malchishua, ^[b]Abinadab, and ^[c]Esh-Baal.

Saul Chosen to Be King

9 There was a man of Benjamin whose name was ^(A)Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of ^[a]power.

Ishbosheth Made King of Israel

⁸ But ^(A)Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, took ^[a]Ishbosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to ^(B)Mahanaim;

² Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed ^(A)Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.

^21 (A)And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them ^(B)Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

^39 (A)Ner begot Kish, Kish begot Saul, and Saul begot Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Esh-Baal. ⁴⁰ The son of Jonathan was Merib-Baal, and Merib-Baal begot Micah. ⁴¹ The sons of Micah were Pithon, Melech, ^[a]Tahrea, ^(B)and^[b] Ahaz. ⁴² And Ahaz begot ^[c]Jarah; Jarah begot Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begot Moza; ⁴³ Moza begot Binea, ^[d]Rephaiah his son, Eleasah his son, and Azel his son.

⁴⁴ And Azel had six sons whose names were these: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan; these were the sons of Azel.

¹² So David ^(A)commanded his young men, and they executed them, cut off their hands and feet, and hanged them by the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth and buried it in the ^(B)tomb of Abner in Hebron.

^49 (A)The sons of Saul were Jonathan, ^[a]Jishui, and Malchishua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger ^(B)Michal. ⁵⁰ The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s ^(C)uncle. ^51 (D)Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.
