⁹ Jabez was honored more than his brothers, and his mother named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”^(A)

¹¹ These Jews were more receptive than those in Thessalonica, for they welcomed the message very eagerly and examined the scriptures every day to see whether these things were so.^(A)

¹⁹ And the young man did not delay to do the thing because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. Now he was the most honored of all his family.^(A)

²¹ She named the child Ichabod, meaning, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

¹⁶ To the woman he said,

²³ Ephraim^[a] went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son, and he named him Beriah,^[b] because disaster had befallen his house.

¹⁸ As her soul was departing, for she was dying, she named him Ben-oni,^[a] but his father called him Benjamin.^[b]
