^33 (A)Ahithophel was the ^(B)king's counselor, and Hushai the Archite was the king's friend.

³⁷ So Hushai, ^(A)David's friend, came into the city, ^(B)just as Absalom was entering Jerusalem.

¹² And while Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for^{[a] (A)}Ahithophel the Gilonite, ^(B)David's counselor, from his city ^(C)Giloh. And the conspiracy grew strong, and the people with Absalom ^(D)kept increasing.

³² While David was coming to the summit, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai ^(A)the Archite came to meet him ^(B)with his coat torn and ^(C)dirt on his head.

The Shepherd Struck

²³ When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to ^(A)his own city. He ^(B)set his house in order and ^(C)hanged himself, and he died and was buried in the tomb of his father.

²³ Now in those days the counsel that Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed, ^(A)both by David and by Absalom.

¹⁶ And when Hushai the Archite, ^(A)David's friend, came to Absalom, Hushai said to Absalom, ^(B)“Long live the king! Long live the king!” ¹⁷ And Absalom said to Hushai, “Is this your loyalty to your friend? ^(C)Why did you not go with your friend?”
