²⁴ But King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will buy them for the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours nor offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”

¹⁶ “Three times a year all your males shall appear before the Lord your God at the place that he will choose: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread, at the Festival of Weeks, and at the Festival of Booths.^[a] They shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed;^{(A) 17} all shall give as they are able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.

¹² But you profane it when you say that the Lord’s table is polluted and its food^[a] may be despised. ¹³ “What a weariness this is,” you say, and you sniff at it,^[b] says the Lord of hosts. You bring what has been taken by violence or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering! Shall I accept that from your hand? says the Lord.^{(A) 14} Cursed be the cheat who has a male in the flock and vows to give it and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished, for I am a great King, says the Lord of hosts, and my name is reverenced among the nations.^(B)

¹³ He said to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, “If you only will listen to me! I will give the price of the field; accept it from me, so that I may bury my dead there.”

²³ that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, so that you might not say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’^(A)

¹⁷ Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.^(A)
